I have a win model 70 in 243. First, I am getting to the point of needing a new barrel. Which length and size do you recommend? Second, I was thinking of having the action chambered in a different cartridge. Is this a possibility and if so what are my options? This rifle will be used by the kids to shoot mule deer. So recoil is a consideration and accuracy is a must. The 243 is okay but I don't have confidence in the muzzle energy of the caliber.

I would like to think that 6mm creedmoor is a good option but I hunt whitetails. Mule deer are slightly larger so you could always go with a 6.5 creedmoor for slightly more energy with heavier bullets such as 140 grain pills if that's what you're concerned about. The action will not be "re-chambered" but your new barrel can be anything you want so long as it is in a short action chambering and same bolt face as your. 243 which 6.5 creedmoor is. Remember to have the muzzle threaded for a brake since you will have the little ones using it. Less recoil is always better. Good luck!

I re barreled my pre '64 match rifle to 6.5 Creedmore. Still match rifle sights but that might change soon. I've only had it out to 300 yards but it's a laser.
