New to the forum and would like to thank ya'll for the wealth of info I've found already.

I just bought a like new Winchester M70 7mm Rem mag w/26" barrel. It currently has a Bushnell 4-12x40 in millet rings w/weaver 2 piece mounts.

I'm going to get the Millett 4-16x50 TRS w/.1mil turrets, on recommendations that I've read here. My question is my mounting options. As I'm a little short, I've always had to "stretch" my neck to see through the scopes on rifles. The exception is my AR w/flatop receiver that I have a Millett DMS 1x4 on and was able to move the scope a little rearward.

What are some of my options in moving the scope back on the M70?? I've looked at the Burris Tactile Extreme 2 piece, but what about the Weaver one piece picatinny base?? Would the clearance be a problem in loading/unloading(no hingeplate) or round ejection??

As I've just bought the rifle and going to get the scope, money is a issue in buying the mount and rings, I want good, but I can't invest that much in them.(I'm getting my Christmas present early

).

I'm going to use the setup for paper and plates, some hunting, but mainly to get started in long range shooting. Hopefully, when the economy gets better(better job), I can drop some more money into the setup. I would like to be able to afford to put more into it, but times are a little tight, plus, this rifle won't be used in an "abusive" environment.

Thanks again for this site and all the info ya'll have provided so far. Any suggestions, even if it's a little out of my price range would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Winchester M70 mounts

Is this a tactical rifle with a heavy barrel, or a hunting rifle?

Reason for the question is that scope is very large and heavy, and somewhat of a mismatch on a hunting rifle...

But...it has a long tube, so it is possible that the ring spacing will not be a problem.

Also, if you are stretching your neck, your stock may be too long. You will want to start with getting the rifle to fit your build properly. Do that step first, then determine what your scope mounting needs are.

Re: Winchester M70 mounts

It's just the standard barrel M70(shadow). I know it's far from ideal for what I want. Just too let you know my mindset(not complaining), if you notice my original join date(09/09) I had planned to build a Savage in 300 win mag, but, I lost a very good job on 10/09, so my plans were put off. I came across the 7mm in an offer I couldn't refuse(son in law didn't like, birthday present 8 yrs ago, since I was family, let me have it) so, I got a like new M70 shadow for $250.

So, like I said, I know it's not ideal for what I want, but until things straighten back out, I'll have to make do. It'll mainly be used on paper and plates, hunting, maybe, but not primary. Just going to use it to teach myself long range shooting, reading and using a mil dot, keeping a data book and so on. This way, when things get back to normal, I'll be ready and know what I need.

Thanks Top Cat, I appreciate you response. The stock could be about a .5" shorter, but if I can get the scope back about an inch, I believe It'll be ok for now.

Thanks again
