Winchester mod70 30/06

I may be getting an early 70’s Model 70 in 30-06. It has scope blocks on the barrel and just in front of the receiver as well as what I think is a peep sight bracket on the left hand side of the receiver.
I was thinking of making it a white feather Carlos H. Build. What scopes would you recommend for this old rifle? Anyone here have a Mod70 that you can post some pics so I can get ideas. Thank you!

Is that a 8x scope? What mounts? Aftermarket barrel??

Good morning,

The most common photos show Scout Snipers in Vietnam using the Unertl 8x. The mounting blocks were usually 7.2” apart.

Marine Sniper Ed Kugler and author of Dead Center discusses in his book that Snipers had the choice between the Unertl 8x and a 3x-9x variable power (NOT the Redfield later fielded on the M40) but a scope most likely sourced from Okinawa. Little to no documentation exists about the 3x-9x. I speak with Ed from time to time and he doesn’t recall much about it. I don’t believe any still exist and there are few photos that exist from Vietnam showing them in use outside of Ed’s cover photo.

Snipers also fielded the 12x Lyman Super Targetspot and 20x Lyman Super Targetspot. Only the 20x Super Targetspot was “USMC PROPERTY” marked.

One Round War by Peter Senich is a great resource depending on how historically accurate you want to get.

6 power scope, unertl commercial black mounts, 20 inch 1:11.25 twist bartlein barrel threaded 5/8-24 with a flush thread protector

1962 action was originally a 243 featherweight, stock is same vintage but not original to gun.

I found it wearing some super light carbon fiber stock.

Ed is holding a Model 70 with a Target stock and a 3x-9x variable power optic. All he could recall about the optics were that they were marked “MARINE”.
