in general, how good were / are they?

i did a search, but other than looking coming up with the usual clutter, i figure i'd ask.

1. accuracy out to 100 yards
2. accuracy out to 200 yards

i have to look up the value in the blue book, but if anyone has one handy can you post up a general feel for:
1. 25%
2. 50%
3. 75%

i know there are different variations, just a general value if possible.

i have the oppurtunity to buy one for 260.00 with a scope on it.

not much more details than that, would like to arm myself with some background first on just the rifle itself.

thanks in advance.

Re: winchester model 52

Top i think you probly know a guy that shoots your 22 matches Carter Mayfield. I have got and probly own almost every 52 ever built. Ask Carter what my 40xs do. I get the 52s because there is money in them. i dont shoot them. Shooting is what the 40x and 37 and Anschultz is for. Dont get me wrong a 52 will shoot but when was the last time you seen 1 win a benchrest match. the 52 is for collecting. its a lot like the Winchester pre 64

Re: winchester model 52

if i can get enough for the wife, i'd definately get a 40x setup.

i was mostly looking towards an investment with the 52, but grazing around the forums and articles, folks say it's a shooter. however, most of them are hung up on not going further than 50 yards, so i thought i'd ask the real shooters here.

if i get it and it shoots, well i may rethink the whole investment thing.

i'll check with carter, he is a hell of a shooter and give the real "poop".

Re: winchester model 52

At $260 you can't go wrong as long as it is a working rifle. All the collector value is already gone assuming it was drilled and tapped to mount the scope.

Stocks and inlets for them for sure are an issue as far as this site is concerned versus the 40X.

Accuracy comes down to the individual rifle and finding some ammo that it likes.

52s had different triggers based on the model - 52, A, B, C...

When the Annies hit the market in the 60s, the AMU and everyone else abandoned the 37s, 52s, and 40xs as accuracy was notably better along with the triggers, but if you are not using it for rimfire position, prone, or bench against other better rimfires it does not matter.

Re: winchester model 52

I'm not a match shooter but I have trouble believing anything is more accurate than my old M52B.

I've litteraly shot flies off my target at 25 yds. Just leaves a few bloody spatters and a leg or piece of wing around the hole.

I used to shoot the thumbtacks out of other peoples targets at 25 yds. at the range (1 shot, 1 thumbtack, one after another - shoot out the top two and the top of the target flops down - my buddies used to really get pissed at me).

I used to sit out in the back yard and shoot the honey bees off the top of the dandelions.

Maybe for match shooting you need better than that but for fun, how can you beat it?

I'd get it (if I didn't already have one).
