Gunsmithing winchester short action

I have a chance to buy a newer winchester short action at a pretty good price. I want the action for a oldschool M40 build. The action is for a 223, question being, can that bolt face be made into a .308?

Im almost positive that you would have to get a new bolt

this can be done it will need a new extractor but the bolt face can be opened up

how much is he selling it for? It could be done by opening the bolt face

Barreled action 275$ its in good shape but another 2-300 to have it totlay accurized and bolt face opened? So around 575$ or less to have a trued up winchester action? Sound like a good deal? I guess I could sell the 223 barrel?

I've been looking for one myself, want to build my daughter a .223rem on a model 70

i prefere the winchester action i got a similar deal on a mod 70 .223 and trued it opened the bolt face and put a schnieder M-40 contract barrel on it and it will shoot in the .3's all day long.

Thats awesome who did your work? I'm looking to find a nice used winchester varmint stock for this build? I don't want to go too heavy as I would like to also hunt with this rig.

i did all the work. mine is in an hs precision stock that i picked up here on the hide and then did an urban digital camo paint job on it
