Went through several pages of a search and didn't find what I'm looking for. What kind of wind flags do you like and where's the best place to get them? Just want a couple for possibly < $50 each? Please, no "just tie a coyotes tail to a stick" type answers.....that's the kind of stuff I've been using.

Realtor's flags work great. You can google them, maybe $12.00.

Alright those are pretty freakin' awesome. </div></div>

Thats one of those, 'why didnt I think of that?' things. Great idea.

Re: wind flags

No kidding. That is probably the coolest windage flag I have ever seen. It beats the fire out of looking at the grass or trees.

Re: wind flags

On the mil. range here, we have long-assed yellow "Pennants" at each 200 yd pole. My Lady and I sewed some up for a friends range, and he's happy with them.

Not saying that these're the best, but they are good wind indicators.

The mil. ones are about 17 or 18' long, and start at about 2' at the hoist.

Hth.

Re: wind flags

piecing together a long range at my club this year and a full schedule in 2013, i searched the NRA / CMP matches for windflags, came up with this out of one of the rule books:

6.9 Range Safety Flag - A red flag visible from the firing line, when possible, will be displayed when firing is in
progress (Recommended size of range flags is 5 ft., 9 3/8 in. at the hoist, 18 feet in length and tapered the full
length of the lower edge to be 3 feet wide at the fly end and made of red cotton flag bunting.)

6.9.1 Wind Flag - Wind flags should be displayed at various distances between the firing line and the targets.
It is recommended that the flags be placed at 100, 300, 500, 700, and 900 yards.

trying to be looking like one of "the big ranges", i found the "ketchup and mustard" tapered pennant style flags at creedmoor sports. they are alittle pricey, but are the real thing.

the tapered helps with twitching the tips in the slightest of breezes, tells you wind direction and a guestimate on wind speed by judging the angle in relation to the pole or ground.

for this year's trial event i ran out of time and money, so i got a red bedsheet from walmart, and cut 3 taper flags (5ft x 12" x 4") and left some material at the fattest end with 2 "ears".

i took the fattest end, attached them to a pole (piece of pipe) with small radiator hose clamps. then cut a larger pipe about 2" with one end angled (like a stake) and drove them into the ground. then slipped the flag pole into the staked pipe (removable).

total cost for 3 was under 25.00, you can see them in this crummy picture @ 100M, 200M, 385M. next year i'll add the yellow half.

Re: wind flags

Learn to read nature and you won't need flags. You don't even need to go to a range to do it. Tough skill to master but once you figure it out you can almost see the wind and it becomes addicting.

EDIT: That may not have come across quite right...it was not an insult...just thinking out loud. I'm sure there are times when flags are beneficial.

Re: wind flags

For you guys with ranges...find an aviation supply Co. and get a wind sock. Mount it to a treetop where it catches the prevailing wind. You can tell at a glance direction, speed, pulse/timing. Yes...prevailing wind doesn't tell you what's happening along the bullets trajector but PW dictates everything beyond it.

Re: wind flags

What's the big deal, sneak in the linen closet and steal one of your wife's sheets and make one.

You can die it any color you want.

Re: wind flags

Thanks all, and, I've made them and it is no " big deal" . I was just told there were some that would actually help you estimate wind speed by their attitude and I thought they might give me some kind of a "base line" . Battleaxe, didn't take it as an insult at all, that's what I've been working on specifically for a while. Lots of corn, fescue, winter wheat and big trees around my range and I've got better in the past few years reading it but just trying to take another step and like I said, have a base to compare "nature" to. Thanks again for all the references guys, this will help and is what I always expect from the Hide. Thanks Jason, exactly what I was looking for.
