She's insane for wanting to get rid of it at all, much less through a police buy back program. But not everyone is rational like we are. And the article came from ABC, so I apologize for your suffering as you read the implied anti-gun crap within the article.

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/val...topstories.html

Just like a scene out of "Antiques Roadshow," a woman in Hartford, Conn., turned in an old rifle to her local police station's gun buy-back, only to discover the gun was worth anywhere from $20,000 to $25,000. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, inherited the gun from her father who had brought it home with him from Europe as a memento from World War II.

The two officers conducting the gun buy-back, who are resident gun experts for the Hartford Police Department, informed the owner she was in possession of a Nazi Assault Rifle, the first of its kind, that dates back to 1944.

The gun is called a Sturmgewehr 44, literally meaning "storm rifle," and is the first "modern assault rifle ever made, eventually replaced by the AK 47 in 1947 by Russia, who copied the German design of the Sturmgewehr 44," Officer Lewis Crabtree, one of the two officers who discovered the gun, told ABC News.

"It's like finding the Babe Ruth of baseball cards," said Officer John Cavanna. "The rarity, it was made for such a very short period."

Most people, however, who aren't avid gun fans would have no idea what role this gun played in history.

"If you were to look at the gun and didn't know anything about guns, you would think it was garbage," Crabtree said.

That is essentially what the owner thought the gun was, bringing it to the station knowing full well it would be put into a smelter, melting the gun down into an iron brick.

"People turn in guns for a variety of reasons," Cavanna told ABC. "They don't have a good way to secure it, they have kids around their home, or they don't know how to use it. This is an anonymous way for someone to take an unwanted firearm and get it off the streets. We then give them a $50 or $100 gift card to Wal-Mart."

Crabtree attributes gun accidents to ignorance and carelessness. The anonymous gun buy-back program is aimed at preventing people from running into potentially dangerous situations with a gun they don't know how to use or work.

This seems to be the reason the woman who dropped off the historic rifle.

"Her father passed away. The gun was in her closet," Cavanna said. "She did not know it was a machine gun.

"If the gun had been in the closet loaded, any second you could hit the wrong level and discharge a fatal round," he said of the Sturmgewehr 44.

This German-made machine gun can fire 500 rounds in minutes, according to Cavanna, who is also a gun range master.

At the time the officers received the gun, it was in such disrepair that it was inoperable, unable to shoot a bullet even if the gun had been loaded. Cavanna said ammunition would have to be especially made for this gun.

The unnamed owner of the gun has left the valuable artifact at the police station for safe keeping.

"We did not take the gun in for the gun buy-back program," Crabtree said. "If we took it as part of the buy-back, we would have no choice but to destroy the gun. We don't want to destroy that gun."

The owner intends to sell the Sturmgewehr 44.

"It sounds like her family could use the money," Cavanna said.

It's just sad to think about all the times this probably happens at these buybacks but no one catches it. Some city cop just tossing it into a bin and a part of history gone.

I just hope she can get rid of it legally and sell it to someone who will appreciate it for what it is.

Re: Woman brings STG 44 to police gun buy back.

I think we should band together and start a company. It will be like those companies that have people stand in parking lots saying we buy gold. Except we will buy guns. We will beat the offer of the police and give people $75 dollar gift cards. We have members in every state and probably every major city. I think we can get this done.

She should give a nice donation to the PD for telling her what it is and what its worth.

Makes me smile every time I hear or read about Komrad Kalishnikov "inventing" the assault rifle. Repeat something often enough and it becomes history.

Glad they mentioned that the scary gun could have fired at anytime before saying that the gun wasn't capable of firing.

No kidding.

Specially made ammunition? Grafs has 7.92x33 ammo on sale.

Re: Woman brings STG 44 to police gun buy back.

My buddy had to melt down 2 Singer .45s and a NIB Colt Python during his department's buyback program.

Re: Woman brings STG 44 to police gun buy back.

When I went through the police academy back in 97 they took our class through the property and evidence collection unit. The Sgt assigned there took us through the gun storage room where Guns confiscated/taken off the streets where kept. He was telling us how many there are in the room etc. etc. I noticed a MP40 on the shelf so I stepped over and took a look at it just looking not touching. It had the Nazi stamps but was in horrible condition. The Sgt then said all these guns will be melted down and looked over at me and pointed to another MP40 a few slots over. This one was in pristine condition. There were many other great artifacts in that gun room but those two stuck with me.

Actually officer, it doesn't literally mean "storm rifle" at all!(don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia, etc.) What sense would that definition honestly make? While "Sturm" does mean storm in German, it isn't the only meaning of the word. In military parlance it means "attack or assualt." Hence it would essentially mean...wait for it..."assault-rifle." as in "Sturm-Abteilung"(SA) or "assault-unit/detachment" of pre-"SS" WW2 notoriety, etc. This explains where the misunderstood "stormtroopers" term of WW1 came from - when they would have actually been known as "assault-troops" in German...which actually makes sense!!

Well, anyway...add me to the "why couldn't that happen to me list?!"

I hope this nation does not come to a forced gun buy back

Our government doesn't have the resources to handle 12 million illegal immigrants (or so they say), how could they possibly handle 30+ million gun owners with an estimated 300+ million guns? If they even try, it would not be pretty.

This story circulated last fall and this rifle was found to be NFA registered and will not be destroyed.

I read somewhere that a group did this in Dallas, Tx across the street from a Police buy back. As far as I know there isn't anything illegal about doing it but it would probably end up bad. All it would take would be purchasing a gun that was stolen or "unknown" and there you would be......receiving stolen property.

Re: Woman brings STG 44 to police gun buy back.

Yeah, or some cop tossing it into the back of their car and laughing all the way home at another stupid mother fucker.
