I just received a replacement walnut stock and forearm for my shotgun. They don't feel like they have any sealant or coating on them just raw walnut if that makes sense. What is a good sealer or coating I can put on the wood to protect it?
There are many routes to go, depending on what type of finish you are going for and how long you want the process to take. Another thing to pay mind is how slick the wood will be after.
Tru oil and Tung oil are good sealants, take your time and appy them with enough dry time in between coats and your wood will come out with a nice shine without being too slick.
Minwax Tung oil, dries faster and has a thicker, varnish type seal to it. Very good protection and very shiny, but can be slippery if the wood is not checkered.
Boiled linseed oil, cheap and leaves a satin type finish. Depending on humidity can take a very long time to dry between coats. Once you build up enough coats, you just add a coat every couple of months and you are good to go.

Are you sure it is unfinished? Touch your finger to your tongue and then to the stock. If the wood darkens it is raw. If it just looks wet it is sealed. You don't say what gun or where the stock came from. Some factory wood is sealed with a mat finish that looks like nothing is on it.
