woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

I've been looking for a lefty rem 700 action for 2 years now and haven't been able to scoop one up. I always thought buying new was my backup plan, then I started looking for new ones in the Varmint or LTR variety and that was just as unsuccessful. Well I fell into an already trued rem 700 with a optic base at a price I couldn't pass up so I can finally move forward (thanks to a member here for hooking me up, not sure if he wanted to be named). Only bad thing is I was hoping to get a varmint sps or ltr and i could shoot it now, but I had to spend a big chunk of my limited budget on an action. I'm better off in the long run but not the immediate.

My plan for now (as I already have a bottom metal, bipod, good optics and rings) is to add a mcmillan or manners stock in the T2 or A3 variety and find a takeoff barrel to use for a while until I have the budget to get a bartlein or a kieger.

That way I can start shooting and learning dopes, wind, proper technique etc and then can upgrade my barrel later when I can out shoot the gun. I figure I'll look for a 308 for ammo availability and maybe go 260 later when I can reload. Plus not to may 260 take offs lying around.P

Just had to put that out there as I'm pretty pumped that my entry into long range shooting is in sight where last week it was still a fantasy.

Any insights, advice, etc are appreciated.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

To add to my trued rem 700 action I now have a surgeon bottom metal and a krieger 1:8 RV barrel. I also have a swfa ss hd 5-20. All I need is to order my McMillan and alot of time (roscoe is busy but worth the wait).

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Parts so far:

LH Rem 700 action
-trued by roscoe
-acculock 20 moa base
-kmw bolt knob
-tuned rem factory trigger
Surgeon DBM
Krieger barrel
-6.5mm to be chambered in 260
-1:8 twist
-28" rem varmint contour
-to be finished at 24"
SWFA SS HD 5-20

Parts to go:

Seekins Rings 30mm - med
McMillan stock
-probably A3
-color likely to be desert camo with OD and drk green added
Metal probably to be finished in FDE cerakote

So while I can't shoot a stock rem now, i will have a pretty sweet rig in a year.
In the meantime I will be shooting the SS scope on my AR learning dopes, wind, etc and also learning to reload for precision rifle from my buddy.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

That is what they had in stock at Bruno shooters. You could order one exactly how you want direct from krieger, bartlein, etc but you would wait for 6 months.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Vendors usually stock longer blanks to accommodate what you want to build. Can always cut it shorter but can't make it longer. Plus when you buy a barrel the have to cut some off the breech end to chamber/thread and cut some one the muzzle to crown so if you had a 24" blank you could prob only get a 22-23" barrel out of it.

I am very new to this also but reading one here an asking questions has help alot to get going.

I would have gone stock rifle had I not been a lefty, but it does make for a good excuse to tell the wife why I "have" to build a custom rifle.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Did you ever find a good source for left-handed tactical stocks?

I have an H&S Precision left-handed long action sporter stock, aluminum bedding block, black and very nice shape that is looking for a new home. I'm 87 posts from selling it here and I have so little to say it is not funny, haha.

Finding something left-handed, long action and varmit or tactical is really spendy and harder than I thought.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Spendy is right but I'm going with a good stock to start and hopefully be done with it. Manners or McMillan. Looking at a T2/A3 style or the T5. My buddy has an A5 and a sentinel (thumb hole similar to A5). I hope to test drive them side by side and see which style I prefer and order it in LH.

Tom said they could sand off the thumb rest on the T5A. Also said alot of lefties use it as is with no issues. If held a sentinel stock an it has a bit of a rest on both sides and it was comfortable but haven't got to shoot behind it yet.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Well it turns out the barrel I did order was out of stock but I was able to find a krieger 6.5 1:8 30" standard Palma at another place so that is now ordered and shipping to my smith along with my action and surgeon DBM.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

I also was able to scoop up the seekins med rings that were on the for sale section so now all I really need is a stock and some serious patience. It will probably be almost a year before it is complete (roscoe is a busy man).

That year does give me sometime to practice at longer ranges with my AR. I plan to mount my swfa HD on my Noveske and shoot at 300-600 to learn dopes, wind, etc.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

I know you have to cut to chamber/thread an crown.I was just wondering why you were cutting four inches off it when usually i think two inches is cut off.

Re: woohoo......finally progress made on LEFTY build

Just because I want a 24" barrel and 30" is what I could find in stock. I could order a 24" blank but the wait for krieger or bartlein is about 6 months.

Finally complete......after the Vortex Lonestar Challenge I had time to send my stock and rings to shortbus (customguncoatings.com) for a sweet multicam paint job. I also upgraded my optic to the vortex razor. I was offshore for 2.5 weeks and came home to Xmas. I got the stock and optic mounted up this AM and now it looks as good as it shoots. Will have to get out this weekend and try out the new optic.
