Hey all, given the exstensive military backround of everyone, Im looking for some exercise's that you have come across that seem to work for "yens guys". My rutine consists of run about 2 miles then weighted push ups, weighted situps, side crunches, wighted dimonds, side planks, russian kettel bell's, and leg lifts. About 3 sets of them and Im done. I dont like lifting weights, only bad things happen when I do, so I try for more of the using my body weight and ground exercises. Any suggestions, Ive gotten down about 20lbs and just want a little more deff. in my chest and abs. At this point Im open to any and all suggestions. Oh and my eating habbits are mostly restricted to chicken, salads and veggies, thank gawd for Balad food. Thanks.

Re: Work out tips?

My suggestion, start wearing a set of ankle weights full time. It's a low impact regimen that's always in gear, and whenever you take them of, it's like you can fly. It's one of the key things I did when I was coming back from the two regimens of cancer treatment. Their positive impact is flatly amazing.

Pullups are always good. You can even order the door frame ones if you can't find a legit set of bars to do them on.

I love rucking, simply because it's working muscle. There was never a time I figured I'd be hauling ass down a 3d World street without my kit, so I focused a lot on getting strong legs, back, and shoulders. Plus, you can really trim down rucking because it usually puts you in your cardio zone at a pace you can sustain for a while.

Re: Work out tips?

Things that work well for me:

Split the cardio and muscle-building into 2 sessions
cardio a.m. / workout p.m., e.g.
protein shake post workout
Short nap after that

Develop a measureable goal

No alcohol
Drink lots of water

This. If you hate lifting weights it may not be for you. I bulked for a while then cut with P90x, I'm on my third string of using it.

Re: Work out tips?

If you are hurting yourself lifting weights you were doing it wrong or not stretching enough.

So, you may invest some time into learning to lift weights correctly and try again if you're going for strength.

Stronglifts or Starting Strength are two avenues that are a good start for using weights should you choose to circle back around.

The whole idea that you can't be strong and have excellent cardio is a myth. After several months of strictly powerlifting and taking a winter break off the cycling I made notable speed gains on my bicycle and lost none of my capabilities for mileage.

Hills were much easier however.

I don't think everyone should go for Arnold strength or anything, but I think it's reasonable that a good platform for any athleticism is someone who can squat 1.5x their body weight 5x5 times. If you can do that your core strength is at a good level and you're ready to rock at all kinds of sports/athletic activities.

Re: Work out tips?

I had super results using the Nautilus stuff, but once I got into weights well over my body weight I started having issues with my shoulder rotator cups...sucks getting old. I may have to look hard at that P90X stuff though, since I been finished I have kinda got away from doing more than watching my food and drink habits, but doing all the hardcore house mods have helped a bit. The 6 month break from hard workuts has been very nice too.

My thoughts on P90X:
Video work outs look fine enough, but the expense of buying the rest of the equipment like bands and weights is added to the cost. I woud have to look hard at the overall cost vs cost of say Crossbow type system

Re: Work out tips?

before, after, and in between runs, resistance and stretching drills / workouts build (in a low impact way) flexibility and muscle tone, a more "precision" body than "bulky brawn".

sut ouot beer, sugar, salt, drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit.

Re: Work out tips?

I like my beer. Coupla afternoons a week at the VFW. I mix sugar with Splenda, and all I ever use it with is my morning Coffee. Salt? If the food tastes like it needs it, that's my body telling me I need salt. We all need <span style="font-style: italic">some</span> for proper nerve function. Lots of water, lots of fruit, my Wife has lost 25lb since February doing just that.

Re: Work out tips?

OK, all you guys recommend P90X. SO aside from the DVD's, how much you spend on the other 'accessories' like weights and bands?
Is the program a better 'injury free' workout compared to weights or other systems (as I said, for some reason I get over my body weight by 50# the shoulder rotater cups start to hurt and I do my shit correct for the best benefit)?
How much time does it take to get from 'slightly soft' to 'hard ass' if dedication and commitment are used for the system?
Typical daily time required?

I'm 46, weigh 185 and want to drop about 10# back down to 175. This will be the hard goal for weight then definition. I figure sinse so many are recommending P90X, AND it is in use by many of the military units while deployed it has a lot of merit, however, if I am to pass it through Panty 6 for financial reasons, I need the bottom line for the DVD's AND all related equipment

If you have adjustable weight dumbells you don't need any of the bands etc.

Two adjustable weight dumbells and a pullup bar are all that's needed.

I did p90x for a couple months and really couldn't get into it. If it works for others that's great.

Fastest way to trim down is to build muscle muscle will burn through your fat like no other.

Obviously diet is paramount to success. Need to get an appropriate protein intake going, and balance the amount of carbs/fat you consume.

Specifically surrounding your actual workout. Protein should be in your bloodstream when your body needs it, and carbs will be consumed post workout. Seems to work pretty good for me.

I quit lifting and maintained my diet for a month due to a big move. Lost 12 lbs in the month I wasn't exercising at all. In all honesty I was really disappointed

You can buy the kit with the pull up bar and bands on ebay pretty cheap. Most of it is Yoga stuff and calisthenics...

Re: Work out tips?

Here's a link to the Crossfit exercise demo videos.

Minimum equipment is required and you basically purchase or make what you need as you go along. You already have some kettle bells so check out some of those exercises and see if it's for you.
If you get into it, think about a Concept 2 rowing machine.

Re: Work out tips?

+1 for bands if your injured

For years i was always injured somewhere so i stopped lifting completely instead of the 3 to 6 months recommended and started doing the bands, isometrics, and body weight stuff. My injuries cleared up in less than a year.

I have been looking at p90x for awhile just haven't taken the plunge.

Re: Work out tips?

Want more def in your upper body and you are already doing kettlebells? Get heavier ones and do some lower reps with the higher weight. Get some workouts from the Irontamer web site.

Re: Work out tips?

Okay here is a proven crash course! All ages works like a charm! If your gonna eat crappy food keep it to a min like only on weekends.

Work out I do every other day

20Min Running, Biking, or Elipitical. (if you have bad knees like myself i do running or biking change up. If you have horrible knees then elipitical machine only)

Cool down for about 5 min

Lateral Pull downs 3 reps of 5 or 10

Tricep Pull downs 3 reps of 5 or 10

dumbell curls 3 reps of 5 or 10

Pullups (if you can do them 2-3 reps of 3

Bench press 3 reps 5 or 10 each

after every rep take a 1-2min break slurp some water.

Results after 2 months 3 times a week only 1 hour a day!

if you can throughout the day snack or eat something so that way
your motabolism is constantly going. like m&m with peanuts or
something kinda healthy. heck even water will help

if my fat ass can lose it so can you. no need to do crunches running and bicycle are efficent. you already have them you just need to cut the stomach fat to show them.

I eat constantly through out the day and almost anything, small portions and keeping it fresh (frozen ok) are the key.
