Just a heads up and I'm sure most of the Okies here already know about it but if your travels ever lead you near or you live anywhere in the vacinaty of Claremore OK, it will be well worth your while to take time to see the J.M. Davis Gun Museum. They claim to be the largest private collection in the U.S. with 14K guns plus other weapons and military items and more. I live about an hour away and visited for the first time yesterday for about 2 hours. I only scratched the surface on what was there to see, something I'll never forget. I'll definately go back agian very soon, its simply amazing and a must see for every gun enthusiast that can possibly make it.

Re: Worth Your While!

I was there during my Rt. 66 ride back in fall 2008. And it is UTTERLY worth the visit. I only spent a couple of hours. I could have spent a couple of days.

It is a monsterous collection. The Kentucky/PA rifle collection is first rate.

Of note, the museum used to be even bigger, but one of the Davis family members (a son, I think) looted a ton of guns out of the place and sold them. Believe he went to jail for it.

But regardless, that museum is fantastic and a no miss. I have some pictures somewhere if I can dig them out, I'll post a few.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Worth Your While!

Thanks for the Heads UP. My wife's mother lives in OK and we have to go visit later this fall.

That's only 2 hours from where MIL lives so I get something to do instead of listening to old women gossip about their relatives.

Re: Worth Your While!

Didn't know the story about the son, guess there's trash in every house. Davis used to own and operate a hotel in Claremore, displayed the collection there but it quickly got too big so he got this building in '69 I think. Its 40K square ft and its full. The guy at the door told us that if they displayed what was stored in the warehouse seperately, it would be the 2nd largest private collection in the US. The visit was a great experience, there were very few people there which made me worry because they seem to run on donations. They ask for $5 which I thought was really cheap. I know everone whose a member here would very much enjoy it, dont miss it if you ever get the chance. Thanks for the link mustang.

Associated Press: Oklahoma Gun Museum Upgrading After Firearms Thefts

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

CLAREMORE, Okla. — A string of firearms disappearances from a gun museum here may go back nearly 40 years, a prosecutor says.

A state audit released Tuesday showed that at least 125 firearms are missing from the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum.

The report also found, among other things, that the museum's director didn't follow policy for receiving donated guns and that a current inventory wasn't kept.

Rogers County District Attorney Gene Haynes, who requested the audit, said further investigation is needed to determine how the guns disappeared.

"I kind of doubt that the general public could go in and shoplift a gun," Haynes said. "I think it's more likely going to be people who had authorized access to them."

The disappearances may have started as early as 1969, Haynes said. Some guns in the collection, which isn't insured, are valued at up to $50,000, Haynes said.

The official tally of missing guns was far fewer than the thousands officials initially feared. The collection should have 13,454 firearms.

The collection contains such rare items as a 500-year-old Chinese hand-cannon and the world's smallest automatic pistol, the Kolibri. Haynes said those pieces are not missing.

The collection was acquired by Claremore hotel owner John Monroe Davis, who transferred ownership to a trust called the J.M. Davis Foundation in 1965. The foundation entered into a $1 long-term lease with the state that requires the state to house, preserve and display the collection with no admission charge.

In a statement released Tuesday, J.M. Davis Memorial Commission Chairman William Higgins said museum officials are implementing the audit's recommendations, including regular inventories and an upgrade of policies to ensure donations are properly recorded and deposited.

Claremore Police Chief Mickey Perry said his department and the district attorney's office will continue to investigate whether the guns were stolen internally or externally.

"It's going to be difficult, if not impossible to trace some of these," Perry said.

It's still a magnificent collection! Cheers, Sirhr!
