    I've been wanting to mess with a 7 SAUM for a while , so I bought a cheap used one . It's a Marlin XL7 , CBI 9 twist 24" Bbl with a MBM brake, bedded in a B&C stock . It's supposed to have 600 rounds on it .

Previous owner provided a healthy amount of brass and load data , also sent pics of several excellent groups. The price was right .

    Anyone care to comment?

If you are right about the price then you all ready know whether you made a good buy. There is nothing wrong with the components as long they line up. Criterion makes good barrels. You!re probably half was through the barrel's life so if it works out it's easy to give it new life. If load formulas came with it be sure to check them against published loads. Changes in ambient temp., powder lots etc. can make significant differences.

I bought a couple of .223s a few years ago under kind'a similar circumstance. Both rifles cost under half what the parts would cost. With load development and some tinkering on one, they both shot very well. Hope you are as fortunate.

I don't think it's a turd , just an interesting choice of action surrounded by some good parts

I hope you did not see my post as an implication that your new rifle is a "turd". I was only pointing out that the combination of a good buy and somewhat unusual choice of components can work out very well. Such was the case with my .223s.
