Greetings, New to the forum and have been kind of lurking around.

I am planning a first build here in the next few weeks on a budget. Did I say Budget? I mean budgetI plan to have the rifle together and shooting for under 1700. Here is what I'm looking at:

Remington SPS Tac in 308
SWFA scope & Rings (undecided)

I was looking around on the site today and ran across a advertisement for ViperSkins.
I looked at their page and still seem to be confused on the application. Are these for AI guns only? Or can a Remington action like the SPS be dropped in?

Any suggestions on optics or other equipment would be appreciated. I like to read.

Re: Yep i'm the FNG

Viperskins are a "skin" for an AI chassis. You'd need an AICS (which is a stock for a Remington 700 style action and costs about $1000) to use those skins, or you'd need to buy an actual AI.

Assuming you spend $600 on the rifle, $100 on a bipod, and $200 on rings and a rail (I'd go with Seekins), that leaves you $800 for a scope.

For a strict $800 limit I'd look at a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 or 6-24. If you can bump up your spending a bit you might be able to score a used SS 5-20 for a little over a grand. Anything more than that and I'd look at the Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21 for around $1250-$1300.

Ah, got it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think if $$ is finalized, patience is your friend. You probably won't like the stock on the tac so you need to add some more $$ to the number above. You may find a good deal around the hide on a complete rifle. I would pick up a bipod later and just shoot off a bag if I needed to put the 100.00 into optics. Definitely don't short the $$ on the optic. You may consider a little less $$ on a mount and base especially if your patient and look around here for used a base and rings. You can find some very generous individuals.
