Damn - here I was, shooting my centerfire rifles, feeling good about myself, doing ok as far as target shooting went, and generally having a great time. I shoot .308 and .260 in bolt, as well as .223 - not bad - built my own, reload my own, great accuracy - everything was fine, then I stumbled on to this stupid rimfire forum.

What the hell I'm thinking, how tough can this stuff be. 22's - you gotta be kidding me - it's kid stuff. So I start reading, and reading, a little more reading. My interest starts to perk up. Why not - I'll give it a try again. Hell, what's the worse I could do? Knock my eye out? It's such a wimpy little round.

I break out my Savage Mark II, it never shot well in the first place so it dodn't see much daylight. Did I mention I did some reading? Well, I read some more, stripped it all down, reworked it top to bottom, picked up some ammo - lots of ammo actually, and started relearning how to shoot all over again.

You people ruined it for me. I have there nice spiffy bolt guns, custom built myself, and now they're growing pale for lack of sunlight. I have to take them out of the safe every once in a while just to show them I still care, but my 22lr has suddenly become my favorite.

I'm taking my shooting to a whole new level. different positions, working on technique, reading the wind. As the commercial says "I'm loving it!". My 22lr shooting has improved my CF long range skills tremendously - and for a fraction of the cost! (and I reload and cast my own too!).

Thanks for a great forum and some great advice. My CF rifles however are trying to shut this rimfire forum down though!

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

I joined RFC in the ending months of 2010 looking for a bolt small game gun and I found the CZ forum..I now own four 452 Americans.. hahah! Rimfires rock!

..I still have to shoot suppressed though.. that could be big trouble if I start doing that too!

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

This rimfire shooting is just alot of fun, and at a price that most can afford. As well as being a challenge. It is just simple to do. And even the best rifles are affordable!!

Below is my new Cooper. However it now wears a 3X9X33 Leupold EFR scope. This rifle is now "King of the porch". Tom.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

Shooting suppressed is great. But the only good reason I see doing it is for high velocity hunting loads, and then you still have the sub-sonic crack. CB Long's are extremely quiet on squirrels and such. And I also shoot the Super-Colibri in most of my 22 rifles and handguns. And that ammo is almost completely silent. So I already have suppressed ammunition for practice. Tom.

It that a LEFT handed Cooper or did the image just get reversed?

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

It is a Cooper. And yes it is left handed. And it shoots real well. It has passed my porch test. I'm having trouble with the magazine. The bolt will not pick up the fifth shell. But I am hoping that is a magazine issue. Tom.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

My tricked-out Quad got so much use that my TRG-22 was sold. I've not shot an unsuppressed .22 in nearly three years (rifle or pistol) - can't recall what they sound like! I still shoot my suppressed .223's but I haven't touched off a .308 in some time, I'm just having too much fun with the rimfire stuff.

Then you'll really be hooked! </div></div>

They just legalized suppressors here in Washington. Shortly after the law takes affect I'll be getting one.

Welcome to the world of smallbore, it's fun and addictive. Buy a bigger gun safe now, smallbore rifles multiply like rabbits.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

yeah, i got ruined too, especially when i stumbled across the hide a few years ago.

nice thing about the rimfires is that it's really good realative affordable practice that can be done at generally shorter ranges or even brought outto 200 + yards. you get to experiment, learn more about wind and other stuff without breaking the bank (unless you get the top shelf rifles and optics) but even then the ammo costs are greatly reduced. another benefit is that it transfers over well to centerfire, so when they do see sunlight the quality of rouonds downrange are better.

plus one could put more quality rimfire rounds downrange in one range session than centerfire without beating up the shoulder, and try things with the rimfire that may not be considered doing with the centerfire either beacuse of safety reasons or cost. support side shooting for one - the practice i've done doing that with .22lr has transferred over well to centerfire, and just basic "redneck gunsmithing" in the garage on rimfires has made me braver and more knowledgeable to do things to the centerfire rig.

rimfire learning a good substitute for big bore?

as a reloader, i can say at least in my experience, i've spent alot of time in the basement cranking out shells to head out with the centerfire, only realizing a mjority of that time reloading could have been spent at the range pulling the trigger on a rimfire. not saying the rimfire replaces it's bigger brother, but sure becomes becomes a huge advantage taking the rimfire seriously then applying it to the centerfire, or even the rimfire as it's own standalone entity for folks that shoot more than just a casual shooter.

with technology and rimfire manufacturers taking many rimfires to the next level of quality and accuraccy, there is no shame in taking the "kid stuff" rimfires seriously, and is actually a huge advantage to the shooter when taken seriously.

there are alot of rimfire competitions out there too that one can practice for, participate in, and be competitive with a limited budget.

the addiction only gets stronger from here, hang on for the ride.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

Ruined & addictive are mighty strong words but oh they fit so well here.

I found SH about 3 months ago through my oldest son and a buddy here in town. My oldest son was starting a 308 build and I jumped in a bought a custom 300WM from Woody at X-Ring Accuracy. Got all excited and shot one range session and sent it back to Woody for Badger FTE muzzle brake install and some other goodies.

While the 300 WM was gone I bought an Anschutz 64 MP R. I started shooting the 22lr and started to really like it. I got the 300 WM back, put a S&B 5-25x56 I got from TDave here. I have not fired the gun. Sorry Woody and I still love the 300.

I am totally ruined, ate up with it and addicted to ths rimfire LR shooting. Yea,I hate to admit it but I bought another Anschutz, a 54.18 and I have a couple more 22 lr's that just "followed me home" recently!! I haven't got them ready yet, but I'm working on them as I get time.

I got it BAAAADD!

You will too, but man its fun.

Good luck and good shooting.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

Its affordable. Its fun. wont say its easy. you shoot 200+ yards with a centerfire, wind is do-able. You shoot 200+ yards with a 22. Your gonna have to get in the game or that wind will make you look like a sissy. Its all good. I really feel my centerfire is improving along with my rimfire. It really makes you focus on the fundamentals. is it a substitue for shooting centerfire?.... No. but when you REALLY start learning how to shoot a 22, from cramming 1 ragged whole groups in close, to pow...............ping at long range. Your whole shooting skillset will improve. and dont just limit yourself to prone or bench. Try flied positions, sling, tactical move and shoots. Awesome fun.

Re: You guys have ruined it for me!

I agree with the OP. I took my Quad out yesterday for the first time with the suppressor mounted. It was awesome.

My centerfire rifles may have a little less range time this summer. The price is right on .22 ammo; the noise level is amazing with the suppressor; and a .22 requires you to work on your fundamentals if you want to shoot well past 50 yards.
