Re: your thoughts on new build

First,

welcome to the hide

Second, this is where the majority of members look at your topic and your post history and decide its not even worth looking at, and or point you in the direction of a google search with something like, (6.5 build, A3, snipershide)

This is where i would normally try and help you out but my knowledge on the 6.5 is next to none so therefore i will point you in the direction of a google search by default

but i will add that just about any stock can be worked on to accommodate any barrel....with in reason, a #9 should not be out of the question.

i had a huge barrel in a HS stock, it had to be cut out to fit but it looked great when done.

best,
joe

The 6.5 is a great option. I would go with the creedmore over the Lapua. To take full advantage of the 28" tube I would go with the 260 Rem over the Creedmore. You have more case capacity and can push that pill a little faster without wearing out the throat.

Re: your thoughts on new build

I used to run barrels that were on the heavy side like that #9. Not anymore.

If you put a heavy scope, steel mount with steel rings on the rifle you could end up with a 20 lb-er. If that's what you intend then fine, just a warning is all.

Personally I'm much happier with medium contour barrels nowadays for tactical matches because of positional shooting and having to carry the rifle around.

My vote is 6.5x47 for various reasons but you would likely be plenty happy with either.

Re: your thoughts on new build

That's why I'm going with a 30" Bartlein #9 heavy varmint barrel in my F-class 7mm SAUM build. I want as much weight as possible to help mitigate recoil. Would I get the same barrel in a tactical rifle? No way.

Re: your thoughts on new build

A lot of what everyone else said about weight.

the 6.5's are mild recoil cartridges/calibers and only reason for making them heavy is for BR type stuff IMO.

I have a 300rum with a monster of a barrel on it, it pushes 20+ lbs and it is not a pleasure to lug around in the least. But all that weight does make it a pleasure to shoot. So it is a trade off in that respect.

For a 6.5 tac build i would be hesitant to go bigger than a #7 contour, if you did go with a #7 you could get it fluted to cut some weight if you felt the need

so what do you plan to use this rig for anyway??
