My girlfriend's son is 14 and loves to shoot. He said he was interested in getting into some kind of pistol competition and mid-range rifle. We live near Bristol TN/VA. My question is, is there any competitions near here and what would they be?

Re: Youth Match?

The Civilian Marksmanship Program has a lot of programs geared to Juniors.

Juniors are also enchouraged to participat in the CMP GSM Games.

Some of the best venues for juniors starting our is the CMP Air Gun Programs, Rimfire Sporter and the NRA's Light Rifle Program.

Also check with your County Extension Agent and inquire about their 4-H shooting program.

Good information for Juniors can be found on the CMP Website

http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions.htm

Congrats to your girlfriend and her son, juniors are the future of our shooting sports.

Edit to add:

Check with your state's National Guard Marksmanship Unit. When I was running the AK Marksmship Program the Guard had a mentor program where a Guard Shooter took a junior under his wing and supported that junior with marksmanship training and equipment, ammo and such.

If I remember right both VA and Tn had excellent marksmanship programs.

Ruger also has junior programs, I don't know much about that, got too many irons in the fire now.

Re: Youth Match?

check on jrotc programs at local high schools. some have fine air rifle programs. as for pistol check out nra progressive position pistol competitions run in conjunction with usa shooting. local clubs have junior programs some are outstanding. check with cmp state director. american legion also has an air rifle program.

Re: Youth Match?

Thanks for the great ideas guys! Ill look into them, I should have thought about the CMP. I have a good buddy thats a memeber with them. Im sure I can fine something he can compete in with all the suggestions. He has been doing paintball and airsoft for awhile now, and been shooting with me. He now want to move into something more constructive and faster! Thanks again for all the ideas and if you think of anything else, please post them! The younger generation is all we have!

Re: Youth Match?

My son Shot ASC his first time when he was 12 and nearly every year since, he is 18 now and shot most comps on the east coast.
There are a few match Directors that realize the future of the sport is 12-20 years old right now. You just have to set things up with the directors and realize, as a Dad, you will not be shooting for the win this trip.

Re: Youth Match?

I Agree I wish there were more opportunities for the young.

My boy graduated from the bb gun and .22 to his AR this year we are going to move to the .308 with a break as soon as his shoulder gets a little more muscle to it lol.
As you can see I am a proud dad and glad he enjoys the sport too.

Re: Youth Match?

I had my daughter shooting at 7 with a 22 & had a blast shooting walnuts off posts for gold dollars. Now she loves my 204 ruger at 400 yrs hitting 16oz bottles. I would like to get her into something also! She is 11 now but kinda likes the girly thing more now..
