There's no way any Leupold or Minox is even going to compare to the low light capabilities of the Swaro Z3's, Z5's, or Z6's. They have glass that compares to Zeiss Diavari's and S&B. They're among the best glass you can get.

Re: Z5's ?

How about between the two Z5's? Is there an apreciable differnce between the two?

A few years ago I called Leupold to find out what the difference was between their 40mm and 50mm lens. The C.S. told me the machine registered a 5% difference on the highest magnification only.

I notice on the Swarovskis one goes to 18X and the other all the way to 25X. 18X is pretty significant on a hunting rifle and maye good enough for a varmint rifle. But that 25X does sound fun.

Re: Z5's ?

The only thing you may notice is a little more distortion on the top end, but that is normal for every scope. Even my S&B PMII has a slight distortion on the top end, it's very minor and the same with the Swaro but its there on every scope. Theres a chance you may not even notice it, you do have to look pretty hard to see it.

I think you will be very happy with the 18X model, if it was you I remember making a post a while back you said your use was hunting out to 600 yards or so. Even a 10X or 12X would be plenty of magnification for that use, when you have high end glass you'll find yourself using less magnification than you normally would. A bigger objective lens isn't as beneficial to light transmission as most believe, what gives you the super crisp picture is the glass quality not the objective size. The only thing you gain with a bigger objective is a larger exit pupil and FOV and the 18X has better exit pupil and FOV on max power than the 25X does even with its larger objective lens.

Re: Z5's ?

I agree with the above. Althought I went with the 5-25x52 and love it. I do not feel I gave up anything going with it, but you really don't lose anything going with the 3.5-18x44.

Distance / Mag
At 25y perceived distance at 3.5 = 7y and at 5 = 5y
At 500y perceived distance at 3.5 = 143y and at 5 = 100y
At 500y perceived distance at 18 = 28y and at 25 = 20y

Objective / Mag
44 Obj at 3.5 = 12.6 at 10 = 4.4 and at 18 = 2.4mm
52 Obj at 5 = 10.4 at 10 = 5.2 at 18 = 2.9 and at 25 = 2.1mm

Our eyes have a maximum dilation of around 7mm. Simply meaning as you go beyond that, your eye can’t do anything more with the extra.

Re: Z5's ?

These are good posts. Since I am an old man now my pupils may not dialate very much. I have no idea how to measure such things. It seems the larger objective will pass more light but will it make any difference in the real world?

Where is the shooter who has compared them side by side and with other scopes?

Re: Z5's ?

I don’t have both and I don’t have another in the same price class. The closest thing I have in this price and mag range is a VX-7L 4.5-18X56. I like my Swaro better.

Between the two Swaro’s, the 44 has a little better field of view, the 52 has more mag. Your application and personal preference would be the deciding factor.

As for lowlight, with the 44 on 6 power or less and the 52 on 8 power or less I would not expect a distinguishable difference in lowlight performance assuming the same lens quality. There’s only so much light our eyes can use.
