Hello guys..

New here to the forum,

Been searching the forums for years but never registered, I hang at Snipercentral. Anyway, I am finally building up my rifle now that I have the money but one thing I have never been great on is scope crap, hate it to death! Im a fan of Hathcocks advise Keep it Simple Stupid.

I have a Mauser SP66 Sniper rifle in the shop getting a full aluminum pillar bed job as we speak. I am looking at the beautiful IOR 3-12X42 but I am really interested in this 3-12x56 ZEISS with mildot scope nearby I found for a killer deal. It has a rail built into the scope for a weaver base I think. Which is what my Mauser has built onto it.

Here is an example of the scope..

My question is, if I slap that exact scope on my rifle, would I have enough MOA adjustments to get to 1000yrds? I understand Zeiss typically doesn't have much compared to other tactical scopes. Or do I just need to do a simple 500 yard zero and use a little down MOA to get back to 100 yrds or for longer range use a little MOA above my 500 yrd zero for shooting at 1000 yrds? I have used 2 leave days at work trying to figure this out and keep finding different info thought i would finally post. I typically try to figure things out myself hence rare posts at either forums.

I really love this ZEISS with built in rail and for the money they are asking for it I would HATE to pass it up, but need it to work at 1k yards or figure out how to make it get there.. I also cannot find any information on if the factory built-in Mauser SP66 weaver rail is canted or not. I'm doubting it is. I bought this back at the end of '09 and am just now getting funds for her.

Thanks guys,
JR

Re: Zeiss 3-12x56 mildot for 1k yards?

Short answer - No…not enough travel.

I have that Zeiss (w/o the rail) and mine has 10 mils (@36moa) total travel in it.
You will need @ 11 mils to get a 308 to 1k.

Re: Zeiss 3-12x56 mildot for 1k yards?

Thank you so much for your help! Is there any sort of canted weaver base to add to it to VIAGRA it to get a little more range? I just love this scope and its unique mount system that reminds me of the original one that went with my SP66..

Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it. Also I've been looking to find out how that rail attaches to the scope? Is there a way to buy that rail and the scope separate? Or is it made to the scope, i don't see how it would attach to the scope you have!

Thanks,
JR

The rail on the scope is part of the tube. It is machined in, not an add-on. You cannot remove it.

If you can find a 20moa canted weaver base that fits on your rifle, you MIGHT be able to get that Zeiss to reach 1k.
I am not familiar with the mounting options for the SP66.

If everything lined up perfectly, you would have @ 9.4 mils of elevation in the scope with that 20moa base.
You would need to use a combination of dialing and use the reticle for holdover.

It would be a crap shoot really and I can guarantee you wont be able to zero it at 100 yards.

I had my Zeiss mounted briefly on a Near 20moa rail and could not zero at 100.
It now sits on a flat base and I use the reticle for holds. Mine is mounted on a hunting rifle in 7wsm. The reticle should get me out to 800 or so with that cartridge. I have not killed anything with it past 250.

Re: Zeiss 3-12x56 mildot for 1k yards?

Thats exactly what I thought! I figured it had to be.. I realized if I can get a machine shop to custom make some sort of weaver to weaver mount interfacing with my original mount then also have it canted 30-45 MOA.. I could get by and do what I want. Just love this scope, so much like the original with more magnification... I have contacted several outfits for this! Thank so much for the ideas...

Sincerely,
JR

22moa Badger raiser with the scope may work (can always shim another 10moa after that)

Re: Zeiss 3-12x56 mildot for 1k yards?

There is no point to have to much tilt to that scope.
Its square elevation range is approx 10 mils and that equals to abou 34 moa.
You should not have more than half the elevation as tilt so even a 20 moa is to much if you like to have a 100 yards zero.

Why do you want a civilan non sniping scope with a rail to a military rifle?
Those rifles have never been supplied with railed scopes.

You can easaly get your 1000 yard elevation if you choose a Hensoldt 3-12x56 instead (made at the same factory, by the same people and same machinery but intended for long range work)
