The backfire hunting challenge.

Not quite sure what to make of the shooter. Seems the part where he got cut by the scope was edited out, unless I missed it.....the 2nd shot at 200
yds. or so...🤔.......a funny somewhat similar story...many years ago I had roommates, we often had parties with many in attendance. Like 30+ goons....so one guy says he can do 100 push ups. I say bullshit. I will give you $100 if you can do 100 push ups. I show him the money and put it on the table. He starts cranking them out....20...30...40...50...60...70...he got to 80 and I was sweating bullets! I had to give him the pesos if he pulled it off in front of everybody. By now everyone is watching and calling out the reps....he got to 87 and just quit! I scooped up my money only to hear him complain that he should get a few bucks for all that, only to get shut down by the crowd that told him to shut up. 🤣

I was surprised with his actual hit ratio at the end.

I may set something like this up with a friend I hunt with next time we're down at his lease. Set up some jugs at random distances and have at it. He wants to be proficient to 500 from his stand.

Seriously though, I remember the last hunt my uncle went on. He was in dialysis at that point and fading. He stayed in camp as everyone else went out hunting. We came back at lunch and he's there cleaning a little 4 point. Buck just walked through camp and uncle grabbed his old .30-30.
He passed maybe 6 months after that.

It was when he was getting a zero. like 3:30 ish.
I kept noticing that through the whole video. Am I the only person that hunts with a fortune cookie ?
This guys form is trash. and he is terrible at ranging. I always have a bag, but it varies depending on the hunt. If I know there isn't much walking I pack a pint size Game changer with std fill. If it's a hike I'll just bring a small squeeze style bag.

He was also extremely lazy with his wind calls at short range, probably thinks that the big 300wm is immune to wind inside of 300y which again shows lack of experience and fundamentals. Not being able to spot yourself shooting jug gallons at 300y is also a proof of that. Why would you ever be at 25x for a 300y “hunting” shot.
I usually don’t watch these type of videos because of the amount of cringe

I actually watched that before getting into this thread.

Good proof that having been in the military does not guarantee a good shot or proficiency. The problem he has is over-confidence.

I watch the Texas Plinking Challenge and once in a while, Cortina's KYL (Know Your Limit) challenge.

Texas Plinking is 1 MOA at 1,000 yards. Guys with hand-built rigs, and some with hand-loads and scopes costing more. And not make a shot in the whole run. That Texas wind will make you its bitch.

Having watched that has re-affirmed that closer is better, if only for the windage. The .300 WM has the gas to take down a critter. Depending on where you are, you have to be proficient at the ranges expected. For example, the TPWD description for the drawn Mule Deer hunt at Caprock Canyon SP states that you must be able to shoot at least 200 yards. It's compartment style hunting with a lot of rock and brush.

From what I could see, he was okay at less than 200 yards.

So, a lot of big talk. I am with Jim on this. I would have thought the winds of Utah would have taught him something like, he is not as good at long range as he thought he was. Equipment aside, I think Jim was wise to point out his procedural errors. Like too many zooms. You can't see your misses. In addition, too many zoomies will highlight all of your wiggles. It is better to dial down some zooms and have a steadier sight picture that will keep you calm.

And, also, not truly taking advantage of prone. If not that, then sticks or tripod (I prefer tripod with a clamp I can loosen as needed.)

So, at the end, Jim has opened the challenge. Is anyone here going to take up that challenge? I know I would not. I already know my limits.

Hmmmm, a painted up Tikka, Vortex optic, Vortex/Seekins rings, an Atlas bipod, and wild claims of grandeur, 70/30 he's a member here that's joined in the last four years.

someone that watches this trash save the rest of us 20 minutes and give us the readers digest version.
Fat USMC guy says he can go one hundo over one hundo on all targets that are laid out in a field environment with his rifle, a .300WM Tikka w/ a Vortex on it. Dipshit proceeds to demonstrate a lack of marksmanship knowledge by scope eyeing himself while zeroing and missing the second target at 322 yards and proceeds to miss a bunch of other targets until basically his hit ratio was about 30-something percent. Throughout his endeavour he doesn't utilize any good rear support, possess little in the way of recoil control, runs his mag too hight, diopter run all the way in, sort of ignores the wind, and basically just wings it. It's basically about 20 minutes of seeing what kind of splash a .300WM can kick up.

Not many “tubers” like to hear themselves talk as much as that nutnfancy fuck, but that backfire guy is close. Sweet baby Jeebus, someone that watches this trash save the rest of us 20 minutes and give us the readers digest version.
Well, to be fair, and having watched both of them for a while, Jim sells stuff, Lt Col Nutnfancy does not. Nor have I always agreed with Nutnfancy on everything, but he does have a lot of good reviews and some smart stuff to say.

Jim is okay, too. But then, again, it is the job of a youtuber to talk and make videos that get attention and ad money.

but, but, but....... all marines are infantry!

makes me want to puke. i am damn glad i am not a marine. because i am damn sure that infantry MOS marines get even more pissed than i do at hearing none infantry marines say that.

it's probably a smidge worse than army fuckwits proclaiming "i had to do everything the infantry does, AND my job on top of that..." cocksuckers aint got a clue.

and lest any of you marines get twisted up about any of that....i will say i had the utmost respect for the infantry marines i have known. i wished the all the guys i served with had the overall disciple on the level that i saw infantry marines demonstrating. i still stand by the "all marines are infantry" bullshit makes me want to vomit violently.

Isn’t it “all marines are riflemen?”

You do have to remember that he was ranging a milk jug sitting atop a “ T” post. It’s not the easiest thing to range in brush country. There sas no hillside to range or tree to the side, etc. Now with that being said, this particular guy never had a chance to en if given accurate ranges.

I already know that I wouldn’t be 100% on a milk jug out to 600yards even if I knew the exact ranges but I’m not great. I seriously doubt many would be in field conditions all the time.

This

Only watched the first few minutes and dude sucked, but I will say its easier to get a solid range on an elk than it is milk jug in the open. Not that you should need that solid of of a range on a milk jug at 289 with a 300WM. Also think a light 300 WM is a dumb choice if you're shooting 100 rounds. Huge fail and a waste of a weekend for everyone.

Checking with Shooter's Calculator and he was shooting Hornady .300 Win Mag 178 gr ELD-M, at 600 yards, it is at 2,023 fps. If we all play it safe and use impact velocity of 2k fps (even though the box will show less. Heck, I asked the tech support at Hornady and a 7 PRC starts to open up at 1600 but I still use 2000 as my limit) then the round still has the gas to do the job. And one might have a shot like that at an elk. Or even a mule deer, which would have vital organ areas larger than a milk jug.

That being said, his ability is not up to the challenge and if I were him, I would not take shots at game past 200 yards, regardless of the round.

.300 Win Mag is fine as a hunting round and I know personally someone who took an Aoudad Sheep at a bit over 200 yards with that cartridge. He also says he has never shot at any game (whitetail, antelope, Oryx, Aoudad Sheep) past 300 yards. He has shot farther at simple targets and has a lifetime (he is 2 years younger than I am) experience of hunting and shooting small things at distance.

So, this shooter really needs to think harder. He could have appeared so much better if he said he would not shoot a game animal past 200 yards. A milk jug at 600 yards? Who cares? A piece of paper at 600 yards? Who cares? But yeah, he put that foot in his mouth.

The issue isn’t the round, it was the choice of rifle for the event, an unbraked 7 pound .300 Win Mag is fine for a shot or two on game but it’s not something you want to shoot a whole bunch of times in short succession. I’ve shot my 20 pound 300 Win Mag 200 times over two days and even that sucked, a hunting weight rifle simply makes that entire situation significantly worse.

A suppressed rifle with a bit more weight would have made a world of difference in the outcome as I’m sure getting scope eye on the second shot rattled any concentration he had right out the window.

I kind of wish I had went with my brother this weekend as he had access to a 600 yard field and I could have easily set up that test in the rain to see how I would have done.

I agree, the .300 WM was a bit much. This is just one of the decisions he made that could have been changed to something different and more manageable. Actually, 7 PRC would have been better. Even a 7-08, which people hunt with, as well. Or a .308. Or, if he wanted gas but not as hurtful, a .30-06.

Again, this was not the only regrettable decision.

If he actually did shoot like he said he did, he would not have made himself bleed. That single action proves to me that you are all hot air, and I doubt you shoot all that much, he may think he does, but I really doubt it.

I will pass some of it off as nerves, I could see someone not being use to being on camera being a little nervous. But that is not going to make you hurt yourself, and if it does you are really having a great many more issues.

I remember playing my first gun "games" and I was nervous as all hell, nervous I would make a fool of myself, nervous I would do something unsafe, nervous everyone was watching me. My hands would shake before it was my turn. Do it a time or two and that will leave you. But one thing you never hurt yourself, no matter how nervous you are. Some of it could be nerves, but I think most of it is this guy like about 90% of the internet experts think they are all that and then some, they really are not.
