Suppressors Form 4 wait time

So I sent in a Form 4 November 5, 2020. Just called and apparently the check didn't get cashed until January 19. And of course I'm still pending.
They usually waste no time cashing checks. But then, "waaaah, coooovid!!!" plus political bullshit plus holidays... Doesn't surprise me really. I've got one on paper dating from sometime in January or late December but used a CC so that was handled pretty much the day they got it.

But talking to a dealer here, he recommended using the CC option on ALL forms. I'd done approximately 24 prior to that with Postal MO's no problems, but figured I'd give it a shot. He said it'd be faster and easier to track if anything went wrong. Said that one time a guy's form got "lost" but after they'd charged his card. Somehow that was what made it possible for them to track it down. Sorry, don't recall all the details.

But since using the CC option, I gotta say, it is pretty fast. They charge it within days, not weeks or months.

Nothing happens until they get their money.

FWIW, just got a call from my bank, some asshole tried charging up over $2k in casino shit... Card only ever used for three vendors for a handful of purchases, ATF accounting for five since Dec. or Jan. as well as being the most recent. Obviously you can tell who I suspect but I could be wrong. It's still the best way to pay for shit IMO and apparently it worked, they caught the bullshit charges really fast.

Sorry a little off topic, but thanks to this thread I just bought a Sandman S in FDE. Thanks S197. Not sure if you just cost me money or just saved me money, but your promo code just dropped the price of a Sandman S to $727.00. Been wanting one for a while and at that price (plus it being in FDE and mil. issue) just couldn't pass it up.

So now it looks like my dance with the ATF begins. Would be nice to actually have this in hand this year, but I suspect I'm probably looking at early 2022.

No, thank you. I cant believe they lowered the price again.

I was checking to see if this was still active, and the code dropped it to 716.66
Exactly, plus $10 for shipping, so I really couldn't resist. For 20 plus years I've owned zero cans (used to live in a state where they were prohibited). In the last week I've bought 2 (someone on another forum was selling used SIG 5.56 cans for $350 - LEO trade in). But given the political uncertainty, didn't really want to hold off any longer.

Same... All these years I've wanted them, and put them off. Then, I bought my first 3 after the election bullshit in Dec 2020... And I've bought 2 more since, because of the political bullshit. I'd rather be "in before the lock" than to not be able to get them later. Now all 5 are cashed and pending approval...So, I'm in the system. 👍🏼 My first 3 should be getting approved any day now. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

(y)(y)(y) You've got a jump on me, but at least I'm starting the process. And with the political climate we're all having to deal with I'd rather spend the money now and have them in my possession when Biden tries to prohibit them rather than wait and be frozen out by the Dems. Hopefully anything already in the works will be grandfathered.

Feel the same way about pistol braces. Rather have one now and make the dems. try and figure out a way to take it away from me than wait and watch them prohibit/require ATF approval of future purchases.

And thanks again to this forum for helping me find a good deal on a suppressor I've always been planning on buying anyway.

They can't stop progress. And if they ever DID pass something prohibiting them, it would have to be after a predetermined date and time, and not just a "right this very minute" type of thing. When the Democrats and Charlie [butt]Rangel[er] cheated on the vote and illegally passed the Hughes Amendment with no sunset clause, they had determined that nothing submitted after May 19, 1986 would be allowed. So you had a few days to rush to get your Form 1's or Form 4's submitted to the ATF before they wouldn't be allowed to be legally converted or transferred/purchased to an individual.

So, I'd guess that as long as you already had your paperwork sent in by the predetermined date, you should (hypothetically) be good to go. I would imagine, just hypothetically speaking. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that. You would think the government would LOVE that $200 per item tax revenue there getting paid too much to stop that cash-cow money train.

I have a buddy thats an ATF inspector. He said 9-12 months on avg. As he explained NFA items are reviewed after the regular firearm checks that need FBI background checks are completed and with the 300% increase in firearm sales there isn't much time left for NFA reviews, so they sit and wait.
It really should be put at the front of the cue for the $200 they charge for the “privilege.”

Contrast that with knocking a girl up.

You will wait 9 months to see what the baby looks like and 18 years to pay for it.

Does that make you feel better?
I actually don't feel bad about it as my expectations are set low. haha Seriously, I knew what I was getting into.

What I do find rather annoying is that this kind of performance passes for effective and efficient in our asshole Fed bureaucracies.

I've been through so many security clearance background checks, both mil and civ, one would think that would shorten the time.... but, one would indeed be wrong! haha

As for babies...damn, wish I could have stopped paying at 18 y.o. Son just graduated with a Dr in Phys Therapy at age 27 and NOW he is finally off of the payroll. But, I am absolutely tickled that we (incl his hard work) got him educated and a good start in life. I really do feel that an education is the main thing we owe our children....as well as being an example of ethics and morals.

Cheers

Congrats for your son. I’ve had so many background checks in and out of the military with TS clearances and still in a high position of trust but I swear the ATF monster is plagued with chronic constipation because it takes so long to poop a tax stamp.

Congrats for your son.
Thank you so much. I promise, no more home movies, but this is Mom (we aren't together but we are still very good friends), son, son's GF, and fat ass me. One of the most happy days of my life. He's a terrific young man.
1622834550216.jpeg

I've taken him skeet shooting and rifle target shooting and he loves the rifles...especially the custom built 6.5 CM...but he ain't getting it. haha

He just didn't have enough time while in school to spend learning skeet and if you ain't dusting some clays, its not really that much fun. Rifles...well, he printed a clover leaf at 100 yds his first group with the 6.5. I hate young people and their annoying young eye sight and young reflexes....and FFS...their hair ain't grey so I hate them for that too! LOL

I promised him a Rem 700 for graduation but that money and more went into car repairs and until he's settled and has a place where he can secure a gun (like a locked cabinet or safe), he will remain rifle-less...but while I'm not telling him, I do plan to get him a scoped rifle in the near term.

Ok, you didn't ask for all of this....but I'm just so proud an happy that I babble about it to anyone.

Cheers

Exactly! But it's even more asinine that the firearms "accessory" gets charged a tax and requires extra hoops and paperwork in the first damn place, and the gun itself can be bought and transferred INSTANTLY with a 4473 and a NICS check. I'd venture to say the firearm itself is more dangerous than a chunk of metal that is incapable of holding, chambering, or firing ammunition... The fact we even still have suppressors and barrel length laws on the NFA registry is bullshit.

What's better than an NFA stamp? Two Stamps!

Approved: 4/28/21 (159 days from check cashed)
Arrived to dealer: 5/11/21

Gemtech Trek II
Silencershop
State: NC
Trust with 2 RP

Purchased: 10/10/20
Cashed: 11/9/20
Approved: 4/14/21 (157 days from check cashed)
Arrived to dealer: 6/4/21

The stamp for the trek took over 45 days to arrive. I followed the instructions to sent a signed letter requesting certified copy and a week later the stamp arrived. It is likely coincidence as I am not inclined to believe my email could possibly expedite this process.

Wait times (as measured from cash checked to stamp approved) appear to be increasing from roughly 5 -> 7 months. Regardless I figure every suppressor purchase is a small step towards abolishing the NFA so the wait is worth it.

Trek shot great! nice tone. put a few rounds without ear pro and while not exactly comfortable it's not terrible either. with the Vltor A5H2 buffer it cycles perfectly.

Same here, my cash dates were both 12/31. I called the ATF last week and they said "Pending" which I'm guessing means "In a large pile on someone's desk".
Pretty much an accurate description of what "Pending" means when they tell you that.

But when they say it, it really means, "You'll get the GD things when we FEEL like getting around to making 1 phone call to NICS, we're just actively trying hard to NOT do our jobs, and keep you away from something legal that you paid a lot of hard-earned money for, so if you would, politely f*** off and stop calling and bothering us...We have millions more people's rights to infringe, so you're not special..."

I believe they mail the processed stamps out in batches once or twice a month. My first two took a month (30 days) to get back to the dealer after approval. I'd say it should be any time for yours.

4 of mine took 2 weeks to arrive to dealer (from date of approval). however i have 1 stamp that took around 50 days, although it did eventually arrive. my dealer is excellent about notifying me so it definitely wasn't on my FFL.

My (first time)wait officially starts today, 11/12/20. Silencer was in-stock and I used silencer shop's system so I have high hopes.
Form 3 delivered to dealer on 11/24/2020
Tax stamp cashed on 12/15/2020
Took delivery of my OSS 762Ti today! 6/9/2021

Perfect timing as the rifle's first trip to the range was last weekend. Not a soul there but me for four hours straight. Simply awesome and managed to finish up every test so I can start hand loading. Cycles with subs and supers, no issue. Quickest dial-in I've ever had. And now she'll no longer be naked!

Came in at about 14.7oz. as my scale reads a few ounces high. Factory spec is 14.5. Can't wait to enjoy the sound of (relative) silence. This'll make a huge difference on the POF Revolution DI with a muzzle brake. The guy next to me at the range will be thankful!

Where did you get the 1913 rail mount for the Magneto Speed? Will it fit a V2?

They're just standard issue m-lock rails. I think it's a Magpul if I remember correctly. I have the latest version of the Magnetospeed, not sure which version it is honestly. It's probably just a touch too far out as I have to mess with the sensitivity quite a bit. I use the same setup on my POF Revolution and 5.56 upper but the hand guard on both of those is smaller in diameter than the Smoke Composites. I was getting decent readings with sensitivity set to 9.

Magpul makes the adapter for the Magneto Speed chrono? I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

My approval date was April 19th but the postage date printed on the ATF envelope was May 7th. The dealer had it about 4 days later.

Been my issue for a decade
Well, I have plenty of space to shoot on my property right outside the door. But let me tell you it's enormously time consuming owning acreage. Bush hogging. Fixing broken bush hog or tractor. Hours mowing the"yard". Pole saw action on infringing branches. It doesn't end. But I wouldn't give it up for anything.

sandman L. surefire alignment rod is nearly contacting the endcap. I'm not perfectionist about bore alignment but this seems gnarly. always in the same location (8 o'clock) relative to keymo indexing point. same on multiple hosts with multiple muzzle devices. interesting part is that when removing the endcap, alignment with the baffles appears perfect. presumably the endcap threading is misaligned with the suppressor body...well at least most other sources of misalignment have been ruled out.

it ran great on my howa 1500 308. no evidence of endcap strikes. regardless it's heading back to dead air. it's my first DA product. disappointing considering price and the supposed build quality. they issued me two different RMA #'s which is extra confusing. hopefully they can get it fixed in reasonable timeframe. every manufacturer puts out some lemons, but it seems like i've always been a magnet for them.

@92G man this is disappointing. Hear nothing but good things about the sandman. Am debating between a Sandman S and RC2 right now for a 10.5” sbr. Seems like DA has been having some qc issues with products but are a good company and take care of ya if you have problems. Sucks to have a problem after waiting months though. I’m sure they’ll fix it and take care of ya though!

Dead Air has great customer service. If it's just the end-cap, and the baffles appear to be aligned perfectly, then that should be a cheap easy fix for them...Just send you a new cap. If you don't already have the Sandman/Nomad end cap tool, go ahead and get you one. It will let you remove/install without marring or scratching your end cap or suppressor finish. 👍🏼

It's probably just his end-cap. He says the baffles appear to be aligned perfectly, so and end cap is a quick easy fix. Just screws on/off. 👍🏼

no. Read the post. The end cap itself is not the problem. the problem is either the mount itself (most likely) or the end cap threads are off bore. if the problem we’re the endcap then rotation of the endcap would cause misalignment to rotate with the endcap itself. It does not. im aware it threads on/off that’s typically how threads work.

misalignment on dead air suppressors seems widespread. My issue is not unique. They try to play it off as ok and simple tolerance stacking, which it is not because again tolerance stacking cannot always be in the same direction…it’s by definition random in either direction of the tolerances. an endcap cannot be a few thousands from a strike and be considered GTG. They’re manufacturing a huge# of devices, prioritizing profit over QC and it shows.

dead air claims 50-60 day turnaround from time it’s received. Is that great customer service in your world? If the repair is anything less than speedy and perfect it will be my last product from them. I have no problem permanently avoiding manufacturers (eg Sig) for garbage build quality and shady repair despite being a Sig certified armorer.
