Is this really what to expect from Lapua brass?

My exact response. Lapua comes with excessive neck tension. I run all new lapua through a mandrel before loading.
All new brass should be ran through a mandrel. Its the only way to ensure proper neck tension and has the side effect of fixing the case mouths before loading/Trimming/Chamfering.

Just shoot the Lapua and forget about it, or send them down the road to someone else who will love them and rejoice that they bought perfectly good brass at a discounted price because of a few dents and dings. They will then size them all and have them looking like new in a half an hour..

Some times you get boxes like this too

Regardless how the necks look and how bent it makes you....has zero effect on accuracy. Lapua has excessive neck tension and needs a mandrel anyway, they are perfectly round after that.... all the bitching in this thread is just that..bitching....Zero effects on target downrange.
My Lapua 300 PRC brass looked exactly like this and I bitched too. No worries...just FL resize and mandrel. Like Padom said, the necks are way too tight to load out of the box.

I am with you OP , that is bullshit . I have bought many thousands of Lapua brass over the years and have never seen necks damaged that bad . That surely happened Before they were put in the box . Sure, they will be fine but that is not the point . The point is they were shipped from the factory as damaged goods, they were round all through the process until something dented/damaged them .

I like my lapua brass , I like my peterson brass , I like my alpha brass and most of all I love me 1/2 the cost of the others hornady brass , I even love the free brass I get from my local ranges once fired free brass not much is better than free . May they all last forever .

A neck has to be pretty deformed to be unrecoverable. Like someone stepping on it or smashing the side with a die.

I have taken some pretty gnarly brass that i swore was dead, run through sizing die, mandrel and hit with the henderson and shit comes out like new.

Brass is very malleable. If you can bend it back to shape, you are fine.

You must be a blast at the produce section of the grocery store.

Lapua used to include a foam topper in the box but when it sat on the shelf for awhile the brass pressed against it would tarnish a little blue where it was contacting and people made tons of threads about it wondering and bitching instead of just tumbling the brass for a cosmetic issue.
So they removed the foam. Now you get threads about people complaining on boxes with necks denting.

Wait until you open a box of Nosler premium brass that was sized, chamfered and de-burred and “ready to load” and because of their new lose packaging have 15-20% dinged necks. When 10 years ago they were packaged standing up in a box with individual compartments and you could load from the box. And oh they are 10-15% more expensive than Lapua and don’t last as long. Size them and use them

I will admit, I am kind of shocked. I have read endlessly about how amazing Lapua brass is. So, I bought my first 100 box of 300 Norma Mag. It arrived today and I opened it expecting the world to look a little brighter. This is what I pulled out of a sealed box from a major reloading vendor. Did I just get a shit box that might have been through a plane crash on the way here? Or, is this typical?View attachment 7884174
Grief, they must have over-annealed it??? (sarc)

Glad I've not seen any crap like that from them

Not typical there will always be a couple dinged necks but that is excessive

Holy crap, no that's not typical. All Lapua Brass I have ordered has been outstanding except for some 6.5 Creedmoor small Primer that the pockets were so tight they were a bitch to load. I would call them up .

Ive ordered a lot of lapua brass in the last two years and never seen a box like that usually 1-3 out of round. Sucks but nothing that cant be fixed. Send them a pic and see what they say. Im sure they will have a good laugh. Ace ventura must have been handling that box

Bought a lot of lapua brass and would get maybe 1 or 2 out of round necks out of 5 boxes and mandrel fixes them right up, I would be very surprised if the cases left the factory in that condition, looks like a ups or fedex defect to me.

Those necks are unacceptable; the vendor should make good on them. I use Lapua brass mainly and the only thing I've noticed about the brass in 6.5 Grendel is that the cases are too short, usually between .004" and .005" below SAMMI minimum. It's a big stretch on the first firing, but correctable after that.

Maybe the larger cases get beat up in shipping because of the weight of the individual cases.
I have 600 new Lapua 6BR cases that all appear perfect right out of the box.
What's a 300 NM case weigh, about 3 times that of a 6BR case?
The Lapua brass I've used in the past is beyond reproach.

Shit like this makes me want to be a vendor. I won't even try to dial in a load on 1st firing of new brass. If seating a bullet in that shit crushes the shoulder or something, it goes in the garbage. I'll lose 10 plus peices at a match anyways, BFD. If Lapua did give you anything as far as return your money etc., I'd lose respect for them and put them in the category of hornady and vortex in my askew little world of mine.

Unacceptable how? They'll be indistinguishable from other lapua brass after being sized or at least run over a mandrel. If those dings have no effect, why are they unacceptable?

Most of us aren't paying a premium for Lapua because it looks pretty, or because we think it can be loaded without sizing.

Sez you Mister.😂😂

Just try and tell me that ain't sexy.

Just give it a few tattoos and some red bottomed heels and, uh, .... I'll be right back.

Well; I should’ve said “pretty out of the box”. The OP’s brass will look just like yours if he puts it through the same process.

I like good looking ammo if that’s the result, but being concerned about dinged necks seems like it’s more about playing dress-up with guns than actually shooting. 🤷‍♂️

Haha, winner of the troll award so far. Dress up ? Tough talk behind that keyboard . Why say such a dumb thing when you don't have to ?

Apparently you haven't read the thread but the fella that's unhappy with his tumbling process.
He wants the INSIDE of the brass to look as shiny as the outside.

Talk about playing dress up... 🙄 🤪🤪

I have ordered Lapua brass 10 times between 2009 and 2021.
I have never seen the slightest defect.
I have never had a problem with Nosler brass, either.
Win and RP brass take extra preparation time.

That’s not the point.

It shouldn’t be that way for the prices they charge.

I’m a guy who bought a case of 338LM from Pettibone in 2007, a Lyman moly kit and 1000 300gr. SMKs and sold them in lots of 50 on EBay at the time, since Sierra didn’t offer a moly coated 300gr. SMK.

I even sold a couple of sealed boxes to members here 15 years ago and there was never a problem, or anything even remotely close to what the OP posted.

Trust me, the problem started when they went to the plastic box.

Any theories?

Chris

Yes: don't buy Lapua. Those of us who know better and aren't hung up on superficial bullshit will keep buying it.

My last two boxes of LRP 6.5 CM Lapua brass looked just like that.
The most recent 6-BR had just a couple of dented mouths.
Back in the gold/black, paper box days, none were dented. It was also $37 per box...😭😭
Just picked up 100 6.5 creedmoor LRP and they weren't quite as bad as OP, but many dented case mouths.
This was my first purchase of Lapua brass, only used Hornady and Norma prior.
Just fireformed yesterday 50 pieces and both accuracy and ES/SD was a noticeable improvement over both Norma and Hornady!
I also didn't separate cases by weight or anything so I'm sure that was the culprit with the other 2, I weighed about 10 of each and Lapua was much more consistent.

What? Wheres the annealing marks? What year is this 2000? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Those cases had been fired 14 times. I turned the necks for a different rifle that day.
I have Lapua 6-BR with 32 firings that have never been annealed.

In fact, I've never annealed a single piece of brass in my life.

Yr 2000? You're showing your age.
It's circa :1995.😂
