Fellow precision shooters,

Looking for bullet suggestions for a precision 300 Win Mag rifle built specifically for target shooting (will not be used for hunting) and for distances between 1000-2000 meters.

Barrel is a heavy Sendero, 26” and 1:10 twist. I am looking for bullets offering a stability factor over 1.5.

Please do not suggest the Berger 230 Target Hybrid as the data sets it a 1.41 for its stability factor. Thank you.

215 Berger is what I shoot in my 300 win mag. Past 1500 yards in all honesty, my hit percentage is the same with the 210 SMK. But under 1500 boy do thouse Berger hit their target. Guess I’ve found my shooting ability limit in that set up, dang wind! Barrel is 1/8 so I could shoot the 230s but could not find them anywhere when the build was done. So I developed loads for the 210 SMK and 215 Berger.

Thx for that info!

I first ran 230 hybrids in my AXMC w 1:10 barrel; they were stupid accurate. Then I got to messing around with the Berger stability calculator... Seemed to indicate that I was losing BC with my twist rate- that bullet really needs a 1:9 twist. Ran the numbers at my projected velocity for the 215 hybrid; looked good; the corrected BC's were nearly identical.

I switched from H1000 to Retumbo, which sure seems to put out less BTUs... Picked up about 60fps (pushing those 215's to 2900fps), and dropped my pressure a bit to a more adverse weather tolerant level.

With 1:10, I'd suggest 215 hybrid; prob not even worth looking elsewhere. H1000 or Retumbo should run well. Fed 215 primers (FGMM LR Mag). Hopefully you have the ability to load long, or your velocity might be a fair bit lower.

I’m going to be devoloping a load for this. 26” 1:10.

Why no go on the 230’s? I initially thought about 215’s.

I was also thinking about H1000. What speedsdo I need to see to get out beyond a mile?

For my mile setup I'm running 212 eldx at 3040 fps this is stabilized to over 1800 and also makes an awesome elk rifle. Weirdly enough I'm using 4831sc with regular large rifle primers because they had way better es and sd then the magnum primers.

I have been shooting the 215 Berger out of my AI PSR. Just did a work up load for the 230 Berger. ABM Ballistics showed supersonic out to about 2200 yards.
I have reached that with 338 LM before but not with 300 WM.

Again, this is for my rifle. Please be careful with working up the load.
Powder: H1000
215 berger: 76.3 grains pushing at 2907 fps with COAL 3.775"
230 berger: 74.4 grains pushing at 2831 fps with 3.600". Haven't played much with seating depth.

WCC case; WLR primers.

Muzzle velocity. Usually taken 5-15 feet from the muzzle by traditional devices. Or right at the barrel end by a magnetospeed.

My bullets of choice for my win mag is the 212 grain Eld-x and the 220 grain Scenar L. The Eld-x gave me a first round hit at a 12x12" plate at 1090 meters. I really like that bullet.

I saw your comments and did some research. Altitude has a lot to do with the 10 twist and the 230gr bullet. I live at a mile high and shoot as high as 8000 ft above sea level. The 10 twist doesn't effect the 230 gr as much as higher levels. There's a video ... Search 300 wm 3610 yd shot. He's using a 230gr bullet @ 2800 fps. I think we're splitting hairs at this point although I just bought a 9 twist for the higher gr bullets. I can't find anything concerning the best long range bullet although the military is using a 220gr smk.

Uncle uses a 220SMK, even though the 210SMK has a better b.c. (0.629 vs 0.670) because it is more of a secant profile and more tolerant to provide excellent accuracy at different jump lengths. What the detail spec does say is that the base-to-ogive (to the 0.300" datum) will be held to +/-0.010". Anyone dealing with Uncle's issued ammo, even the match stuff, knows this is pretty tight.
