Has anybody put hands on a Bad Rock South Fork yet? I would love to hear any impressions on the rifle you guys may have. I have already reached out to them with a few questions but would love to get some outside opinions. The rifle will be used to shoot production class this year if I decide to go this route.

So I talked to BadRock/Defiance today and it looks like lead time is roughly 2 months to get your hands on one of these. They source their barrels from various manufacturers but they are all match grade. They are still working out pricing for rebarreling. I might be pulling the trigger on one of these shortly so I’ll keep this thread updated.

I have been considering one as well. I did a tenacity build recently that was very similar, except 6XC, and i was roughly the same price without some of the extra features that have been added to the action they are making for the south fork

I just put an order in for one of these. So far customer service from the Defiance team has been great and I feel like I’ve made a good choice.

Has there been any confirmation on what barrels these are coming with? With the addition of the long action variants I am getting tempted...

They are using a variety of manufacturers for their barrels but all match grade according to BadRock/Defiance.

I knew that had been there stance for a while. Was hoping that had found a single manufacturer that had were going to use.

I'm guessing defiance jumped into the sub-$2000 production class rifle game as fast as they could and will eventually have a set barrel manufacturer.

To keep it 2k and under, they have to use whatever barrels they can get at or below the costs the need to be profitable.

And telling you which barrel yours was built with would cause a shit show. Guys would be returning or cancelling their order holding out for whichever brand barrel they prefer.

I would not expect them to have a set barrel brand unless they can secure a deal that keeps up with their demand and the price they need them to be.

I would assume the price they need is lower than what most barrel manufacturers would like to sell them for and will likely only sell them at that price when they have a surplus.

I’ve got one. Defiance/BadRock has been great to deal with. I’ll post a review once I get some time behind it and some rounds down range. Hopefully I’ll get to this weekend.

Great thanks! Let us know your thoughts. What drew me to it was the relationship (or ownership) of Defiance Machine

May be a stupid question, however how did you order? I noticed on their site there is only a phone number and/or a form to fill out for more information.

They have stated that they dont have a set barrel vendor. They are using whatever they can get in quantity for decent price apparently

Any recommendations for ring/mount height on this for 56mm and 34 tube? Would like to have everything ready for delivery day.

Not to be too biased, but the BadRock rifles are pretty incredible bang for the buck and the team over there are incredible to deal with :)

@azred33 you can get away with medium (1.00" height) rings, but you could have scope cap clearance issues, so a set of high's (1.25" height) rings may be preferable?

? nicely played! I think I only got an invoice from her but she does have a nice voice. I’m pretty sure they blocked my number after I was just calling and breathing heavily.

New member here. Been watching this site and conducting A LOT of research on a precision rifle to purchase over the past month and a half. I came across this and absolutely fell in love with it. I called BadRock and placed my order today. I messaged them on FB as well and both lines of communication were absolutely great. I look forward to seeing this rifle and conducting future business with both Defiance and BadRock.

Let us know how it goes! With all of the negative forums coming out about MPA’ customer service, I am really leaning this way as well

Honestly, I was looking forward to purchasing from MPA, their new production rifle. There's always going to be someone who's unhappy or has had a bad experience with companies (not trying to downplay those that have had problems) BUT those complaints and negative reviews about their CS really is what turned me off. For every 100 reviews you can have 1 or 2 negative and those can be the ones that hurt you.
I by far don't have the experience in this new found precision world but CS is not new.

Couldn’t agree more. And truth be told, with the amount of growth going on in the sport...I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some issues with meeting demand. It just appears (and again I could be wrong as an outsider) that the issue is lack of communication.

What scope and mounts are you using? I'm wanting to buy mounts ahead of time so when I receive mine I can go straight to the range. My scope is a PST Gen 2 5-25x50.

Edit: MDT_Josh answered for the 56mm. Since it's just under a 1/4" (.236) difference between the 50 and 56 I'm going to go with the 1.00" mount.

Bad Rock South Fork initial report

I finally got to take my new South Fork to the range and wanted to share my experience. I ordered the rifle on March 8th and it arrived about a month later. I got a 6.5 cm in black with the 20 moa rail. I already had some AICS pattern Accurate Mags so did not order any others. I also had an APA LB brake so I did not need the 419 brake either.

When I picked up the rifle from my FFL I was anxious to get it set up and hit the range. I did a few measurements for future use. Weight with the Harris bipod and Cronus scope mounted was 12.4 lbs. The barrel is a Heavy Target profile about 1.25” down to 0.894”. The chamber looks to be 2.845 to the lands, so some room to play with OAL. Bad Rock says they will get into the re-barreling business, but not just yet as there won’t be much need until these first rifles (I think they started with serial # 00101, this one is 00134) get a few thousand rounds through them.

The barrel manufacturer remains unnamed but it is button cut stainless steel. They also say the action shares some features with the Defiant Tenacity, but they are not the same and Bad Rock may sell their own action as their business plan develops.

An earlier post here gave me the measurement for my scope mount at 1.25 for clearance of caps. I ended up ordering an MPA Bolt Action 34mm mount directly from them and then an Athlon Cronus with MK machining CF throw lever and aluminum level from ELRBasics. The MPA is 1.25” high and the Cronus with Butler Creek caps sits 0.28” off the rail, so even a little lower could have worked. The throw lever did not work at all. The clearance between the lever and the bolt handle is too small and the CF cut my fingers up pretty well until I pulled it off. The level is still backordered.

Once the rifle was ready to go, I headed off to the range for an afternoon to zero and a second for shooting steel.

Zero went without issue. I really like the adjustable cheek piece as it not only goes up and down, but also side to side. I shot with electronic ear plugs and full side adjustment of the cheek piece which gave me the best cheek weld I could have asked for and an excellent position behind the scope. My days with electronic muffs and poor cheek weld are over. The rifle feels lighter than others I have shot but weighs the same. I think the skeletonized stock gives it a lighter feel on the bipod and the swivel location makes for well-balanced movement of the rifle. It was very comfortable to shoot prone and bench. Once I had the scope dialed in every shot filled the ragged hole in the center. Smooth action and accurate shooter, I began to form a really good feeling about this rifle.

Next afternoon was for the range. My first shot was at 1000 yds to get a Calculate Muzzle Velocity adjustment for the Kestrel. Not too much change from the chrono results, but enough to make it worthwhile. From then on it was a series of first round hits from 350 through 1380. This rifle can shoot better than I can. Two of us shot 60 rounds from the South Fork and we were both impressed with the fit and finish of the rifle and its ability to consistently hit the target. The Trigger Tech Primary trigger was perfect from the factory. Very little pull and a crisp break. The factory setting worked well, I did lighten it up a bit when I got home, so I will see if that is needed or not next time out.

We both had our regular rifles with us and traded back and forth between them and the South Fork is our new favorite.

Overall, I really like this rifle. It is comfortable, well balanced, looks good and hits what I point it at. At this price point you are getting a well-made, smooth action made by a well know company, a barrel that works along with the TriggerTech and a MDT LSS-XL chassis. I think this is great value and can’t think of any changes I would make to the rifle.

According to Bad Rock, they have some black 223, 308, 6 mm cm and 300 win mag in stock but if you want a 6.5 cm the wait is on somewhere around 2-4 months.

I too am in the market for a new rifle, using 2k $ as a monetary limit, looking at the Badrock, Patriot Valley Arms John Hancock, and the Bergara Premier Ridgeback as options. The Badrock and Bergara both have TriggerTech triggers whereas the John Hancock has a Timney trigger (my preference s towards the TriggerTech) but it seems the stocks on he Badrock and John Hancock are more adjustable than the Bergara’s Grayboe stock... I haven’t been able to get hands on either of the rifles yet, has anyone out there had an opportunity to personally check out these rifles? Defiance and Bergara Premier actions speak for themselves based on their past history, I don’t know about PVA actions... seems they all come with button die barrels, would love to get one with a Bartlein barrel eventually but given my self imposed $ limit, will potentially go with a Bartlein if/when I need to replace barrel... any insights will be appreciated.

@7sfga If you’re close to Virginia and not down in Florida like your name might suggest you can come shoot my Badrock. It’s broken in nicely. I shot a sub 1.5” group with handloads the other day while checking dope at 500. I know PVA has a great reputation as well so I’m sure you can’t go wrong with either. Unfortunately the JH doesn’t come in purple which was a deal-breaker for me ?

The bad rock has been one on my list. I have a Ruger Precision right now and my debate had been either upgrade the Ruger or sell it and pick up either a John Hancock, Badrock, or the MPA production rifle. They all seem to be equally rifle so it makes it a tough choice without putting my hands on them.

Retired now and living in the PNW but thanks for the invite! Yes, the PVA looks great but stock looks like they aren’t quick adjust like the Badrock. Do you know who sourced your Badrock barrel? I know Defiance was sourcing more than one vendor to keep costs low/keep product rates flowing. I’m pretty sure they do their own machining to the barrel blanks (chambering, threading, crown, headspace) so would assume it is great work given their reputation for their actions. Would be a no brained for purchase if it had a Bartlein barrel with T-gain rifling. Leaning towards the Badrock myself, just spoke to Tara and she says they are down to less than 30 days to process order. Thanks again.

They wouldn’t tell me who supplied my barrel and I talked to just about everybody over there as I was waiting on my rifle. Whoever supplied it, I would like another in about a year.

Hello All! I'm new here but just wanted to say hi! I just got a HuckleBerry South Fork and took some accessories off my Thompson LRR 6.5 that the BR SF replaces. Here's a pic, one quick question if you don't mind. For those of you that have one how did you go about barrel break in? I wrote Defiance an email asking them also. Appreciate any and all help!
Adam

I just ordered my Badrock last week... but in regards to barrel break in, check out Bartlein’s website, they have a pretty good recommended regime for barrel break in. I know the Badrock doesn’t have a Bartlein barrel (wish it did but understand the cost and availability issue Defiance is working with) but break in concept with a button die barrel should be same.

Here is the link as it is hard to find on their side: https://bartleinbarrels.com/break-in-and-cleaning/

For anyone interested, BadRock will be in our booth at the upcoming Precision Rifle Expo at the Arena Training Facility, September 28-29. They will also be doing demo's with the South Fork on the range, so if you've been looking to get hands on with one, and maybe even shoot it, that would be a great opportunity.

People need to stop asking for Bad Rock to settle on one barrel maker or to tell you who they buy from or whose barrel is on yours.

Those aren't things you're going to get for $2K and still let BR make a sustainable profit and margin per rifle. They're not playing your Q&A game for a reason and it's not because they have something to hide.

If you think I'm wrong let me know what your experience is in managing product line P&L in an mfg business.

I have been loving my BadRock! This thing is a beast and the barrel is magic (thats why they dont say). How has everyone liked theirs so far? I have been using factory Hornady Match 140s and they have been very good, since they shot so well I haven't tried many other brands. Does anyone else have a favorite factory ammo? I don't handload yet.

Almost like my list PVA John Hancock, Badrock Southfork, Seekins Havak, or if I end up more patient a Bighorn Arms, TL3 6.5 Creedmoor, w/ DLC coating, DBM, Bartlein 26" threaded, TriggerTech Diamond in a GRS Bifrost stock.
