My bad, I forgot to add the link: https://globalnews.ca/news/6155243/...of-coachs-corner-following-poppy-controversy/

Short version, except for those in TEXAS, is that Don Cherry spoke on air about people should purchase the Poppy's that the Legion sells each year, in HONOR and RESPECT for those who served,, and are serving. And he got fired for it. Maybe that's how folks in TEXAS want things, but everyone I know up here actually has REGARD for our soldiers. Current, and past!

He was speaking the truth it seems. I have no idea what a poppy is though. Why did you bring up Texas twice? It's not our fault you are Canadian.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian who served as a brigade surgeon for an Allied artillery unit, spotted a cluster of poppies that spring, shortly after the Second Battle of Ypres. McCrae tended to the wounded and got a firsthand look at the carnage of that clash, in which the Germans unleashed lethal chlorine gas for the first time in the war. Some 87,000 Allied soldiers were killed, wounded or went missing in the battle (as well as 37,000 on the German side); a friend of McCrae’s, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was among the dead.

Struck by the sight of bright red blooms on broken ground, McCrae wrote a poem, “In Flanders Field,” in which he channeled the voice of the fallen soldiers buried under those hardy poppies. Published in Punch magazine in late 1915, the poem would be used at countless memorial ceremonies, and became one of the most famous works of art to emerge from the Great War. Its fame had spread far and wide by the time McCrae himself died, from pneumonia and meningitis, in January 1918.

For Don Cherry to lose his job for speaking THE TRUTH and REALITY and LOGIC is truly appalling.

The whole damned network can rot in flames, for all I care. This is ridiculous.
Here in Detroit the hockey has been abysmal for a few years so I haven't watched too much of it, too painful I guess. Gotta love those suits Cherry picks out though!

I'm not the most ardent hockey fan, nor am I the strongest 'hockey watcher'. But I know a Canadian 'celebrity' when i see one, and I've known of this man for 'some decades now'. For him to lose his job over the outcry of 'people' about his stance on VETERANS is beyond dismal, disgusting, pathetic, and downright inflaming.

The whole point is to RESPECT the VETERANS. All of 'em, standing AND fallen. Everywhere. Not just a Canuckian thing, not a hockey thing at all, and not a North American thing either. We've many ALLIES all over this world, and this respect is for ALL of ya'll.

Anyone implies offense to the premise, or advocates insult towards such, is going to be CALLED OUT. Veterans deserve respect, it's as simple as that. I can't say it any plain'er. And yeah, when a texan makes a derogatory statement along the lines of "he's only a Canuckian so his opinion don't matter....." (or along those lines) yeah that PISSES ME OFF, TOO.

Some of ya'll know me, and those that do,,,, know why.

All Don Cherry did was speak logic and truth, nothing controversial, unless one is brainwashed by the Left, in which case the positives known as assimilation and patriotism are painted as evil.

Im all for freedom of speech. But you have to deal with it. If your boss or employer wants to fire you for it TO DAM BAD. I agree Don Cherry was right in his opinion. But his employer thought different. This is a different day and age. The little basement dewellers have taken over

A couple of years ago, a guy with poofy hair, who puts his hands on another guy's ass- for money- before asking for his balls, went off and said some stuff that offended a bunch of people and he got fired from his employer too. Everyone around here was glad he got fired, because he didn't have the right to say stuff while on the clock. Now, we're mad this other guy that said some stuff that offended his employer got fired for saying his piece on the clock too? You can't have it both ways. Just sayin...

I'm not familiar with the poofy hair guy's case, so I'm not sure what the details are, but we can't just consider everything the moral equivalent. Saying patriotic things that are normal and supportive of cultural assimilation should be the standard, and left wing views should be shouted down for the poison they are. What Don Cherry said didn't even rise to the level of "prejudice".

There is no such thing as a different day and age. There is such thing as persecution. Claiming it is a different day and age is a poor excuse for not standing up for what is right, and aiding in the persecution of people you claim to agree with.

Poofy hair guy lost his job because he sucked. He was a one trick pony and it didn't take long for the professionals to figure him out. He was no longer needed and he then took a knee to protest.
Rachel Dolezal knows more about his race than he ever will.

First I ever heard of Don Cherry was on Letterkenny. In the show they do a fundraiser for Don Cherry's Pet Rescue Foundation.

Playing devil's advocat as a visual minority military member with immigrant parents, I can see how his words were taken out of context. I do think he could've chosen his words a little better, but the gist of what he's saying is very much valid. Just about everyone in the CAF knows Cherry is a huge supporter. It really is weird to see this as the hill he dies on though, considering how controversial he's been in the past.

He’s an eccentric retard who has lived more of a life than many of us ever will. I love the guy.

He made his stand and I respect him for that.

Fuck those who don’t like it. Maybe this is his way of moving off into the sunset, all the while giving a great big middle finger to all the sjw soy boys and girls.

My concern now is; Who is going to pick up the torch, carry it and do at least as good of a job as Cherry ? It sure won't be that bootlicking pussy Ron MacLean.

Oh, for sure. He's a breathe of fresh air in a world of everyone treading lightly with our words. It's safe to say most of Canada grew up listening to him on Coaches Corner and he's definitely going to be missed. Not to mention, for all we know, this could've just been the excuse some higher up wanted to let him go. He's put his time in, he's put his money where his mouth is with supporting the troops, I wish him well without any regret.

I would have thought that you being here since 2006 with almost 1000 posts would have known well by now that Sean is Good people.
Sean is the kind of people that you want standing with you when bad times come.
I'd suggest his opinion is just as valid if not more so than quite a few other folks.

Getting the hammer for conduct while representing an employer I'm fine with.
Comparing what was done and said apples/oranges.
As one can't deny the difference/standard being applied to either idiologies.
I'm guessing Nike will not be picking up Don.

Colin is a stupid fuck, and I wish him no good at all. Not quite for the reasons many here would say the same for though.

I respect someone's right to protest. I DO NOT agree with how he did it and as soon as his plan started to go south he should have stopped.

I hate him because, it is my understanding that he was adopted and given a very good life by his new parents. There is no fucking way he can relate fully with people (regardless of race) who live in the inner city. His story was up until that point the story of the American dream.

I believe he was on a 38 million dollar contract. That kind of money could make a difference.

Why not have a press conference, say that he was going to start a program for inner city youth. Start with seed money from your own salary of about 37.5 million. Make a difference. Go win 5 superbowls, have a wife and don't beat her or cheat on her. Basically be a good example for the youth.

Nope, take a knee and flush it all down the toilet. What an idiot. Saddest crash and burn I have seen in awhile.

126 Million with 18 Million guaranteed.

His main problem at QB was simply that he was not that talented. He was the product of a great running game, defense, and some pretty good coaching in San Fransisco. Just like his foray into playing the oppressed, his act as an NFL quality QB was just as fake.

So while I more or less agree with you on everything. I don't agree he had the option to shut up and have a great NFL career. He was done, he knew it, and he wanted a pay out before he left, or wanted to make a name for him self, and have someone else to blame for his washing out. I laughed my ass off when SF gave him that giant contract and had to let some key pieces go to pay him. I said, "that contract will last 1 to 2 seasons before he is gone, and they realize they sold their team for nothing."

Don Cherry is 85 years old, and he's a stand up guy. He said he meant what he said, and doesn't regret saying it.

Got to respect a man that stands by his word now a days especially when he is right but everyone is saying he's wrong
