Movie Theater Sicario 2: Soldado

I liked Sicario a lot, and am looking forward to Soldato, but the first one also made me very uncomfortable just about the whole time I was watching it. It suddenly occurs to me that I end up enjoying everything that has Del Toro in it.

I'm eagerly awaiting this one as well. I'm on the fence about Emily Blunt's character not returning. On one hand she was kinda weak and I get that's what they wanted to convey with writing it that way, but on the other, I would have liked to see the character "see the light" and get on board.
Extending her character's path could only lead to someplace off-screen.
Remains to be seen whether this new director's vision pulls it together, not that a good story isn't required to begin with, but I'm excited for this one as well and had no idea it was in the works until I saw this... Thanks!
Sicario was INCREDIBLE...and yeah, it made me uncomfortable too. I wonder how much goes on out in the world we here are just oblivious to.
We live about 50 miles Norte of the border, and there's a lot of stuff/people passing through the Sulfur Springs Valley every day. It's very hard to hold a single viewpoint hereabouts, since we are immersed in the border community. It makes me have to think on a whole different level when considering home defense and personal defense. Some of those folks (of all sorts) are related to friends and neighbors.], may even BE friends and neighbors.
There is nothing abstract about Sicario for us here.
My "local range" is literally within a rifle shot of the Border. We carry "Constitutional" the whole time at the range. County Sheriffs, CBP, and ICE are practicing literally on the other side of the berm on our left.

We used to say the Marines taught us just about enough hand-to-hand stuff to get ourselves into trouble, but not quite enough to get us back out.
The Instructor wanted the biggest, baddest 'Cruit we had, and had to settle for the biggest; me. I was 19, 6' 5 1/2", and all of 160lb wringing wet. I was supposed to throw a right at him, but I figured the only way I was going to get anything out of this was to cross him up and threw a left.
About two minutes later, as I was waking back up; I heard somebody yell, "Call off the ambulance, he's coming back around...". I remember my head hitting the mat, hearing him count "1..., 2...,3..."; and then nothing.
The experience of a lifetime, and first proof positive of my own mortality.

It's to note the man behind the first has yet to make a bad film either. Denis Villeneuve has yet to make a film that wasn't good-great. I don't think Soldato will be as good without him, Roger Deakins for cinematography, and Jóhann Jóhannsson with his score for the film. That Juarez scene when they're heading in was chilling with the "The Beast" playing in the background.
While the entire cast was great and Del Toro was obviously the best i really enjoyed Josh Brolin in it. Still one of my favorite films to date. Saw it and the ordered it on blu ray the next day.
Really looking forward to Soldato. I have seen Sicario a handful of times and it never gets old.
I think it’s going to be hard to match or continue on from Sicario, but let’s hope they can maintain the same mood and tone in the movie and give us that raw cartel feel. Hoping it’s as good as the first one, fingers crossed it doesn’t carry on the sequel=shit trend.
Mexico is a raw place. Back in '89, our Daughter graduated from High School and as a graduation gift, the whole family spent a week in a posh resort in Mazatlan. But while we were there, there were state police armed with subs within eyesight of each other everywhere with in the Tourista areas.
Despite all that, we simply paid attention to what we had come to do, and had a really good time.
(It's part of our lifestyle, this past October, we all went to Waikiki so as to better celebrate our Granddaughter's 21st Birthday). We travel, that's our chosen collective 'vice'. Not too frequently, but in the grander style. The old house had sold the month earlier, and we had decided to get some of that dough out where it could 'play nice' before we took the long nap.
Now before I start sounding like a rich witch, we are not so very well off. But we save it up and put it where it makes for the best memories.

Saw an interesting interview with Josh Brolin. He talks about his character and why he seems to detached and aloof. It's because he is running the show- its his characters world and he doesn't have a care because he rules it. That really helped me understand his character better.
You can see that mindset in the trailer for Soldado. He is walking through some compound in shorts and sandals.
In the first movie, he gets on the jet and takes a nap.

I'm worried that they are trying to do some soul searching movie between Brolin and Del Toro. Blunt's character came close to ruining the first one and I worry that the producers will try to hammer home some message with this one. I'm fine with a 'this is all messed up' as in "Traffic", but I hope it doesn't go full retard. The previews are awesome looking. "I'm going to need a strike team, two blackhawks, a drone, the head of Alfredo Garcia and the Beatles White album....."

That movie was called "Act of Valor". They need some existential crisis for literary purposes. Brolin-Blunt/ying-yang thing. The duality of man; The Jungian thing, sir.
Can’t wait for the 2nd one to come out. I just re-watched the first one last month. The Dolby ATMOS surround mix was awesome. Towards the last parts in the secret tunnel, the gun shots was mixed in well. And shots has some mid bass chest thumps too.
In the first movie they went into the tunnel without suppressors......not likely.
No........no more Blunt. They did they right thing by turfing her. The only decent role she ever played was his mistress in Charley Wilson's War.
Whaaaat?! I thought she did great in Edge of Tomorrow! She did alright in Sicario. Not great, but alright. She'd done others that I enjoyed a good bit. To each his own, I suppose!
Yeah, no offense to others.........but I found her to be high maintenance, (very) whiney, high drag and low speed. I'm old......very low tolerance for any of that shit.
Of course you did, because that's how her character was supposed to be. My point is, I enjoy her as an actress and think she does a good job with the roles she plays. Whether or not I like the character is a different matter, but Emily as an actress does a dang good job, overall.
I liked the early premise of us kicking the cartel's asses since the popo down south cannot But sadly that was not this movie - dectent story but expected more shootem up bang bang. kind of a surprise ending - well there is the next time.
I was a bit let down..... didn't dislike it but felt it was not as good as the first.... My .02 worth.
Pretty good, but not as good as the first. Has a number of twists. I didn't think they had a real coherent plan.
Too many sequels are just money grabs with the storyline being weak.
it was all good until the last 15min. empty ending which is presume was intended for the trilogy..
Eh, thought it was ok....not as good as the first one. I am expecting a third release.

I think a lot of people have forgotten about the movie "Clear and Present Danger". It also showed that "Reality" going back to the earlier days of the America's drug war. One of my favorites from that movie:
Sergeant Major: "Soldier, how did you get so close to me?"
Chavez: "Sniper approached the instructor by being a sneaky bastard, Sergeant Major!"
It has been going on for many years without it really coming to light, however with todays information sharing capabilities it is a lot harder to keep under wraps.

I really enjoyed part deaux. I agree that the story could have been slightly more coherent, especially the weak ending but everything else was good. Brolin and del Toro are excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed their character development. I liked the scene with the deaf dirt farmer and what it revealed about the Sicario. The action scenes were pretty good and it was really nice that they showed the complexity of the border and not just "mean Americans, nice illegals".
The daughter of the Cartel boss did a good job too. I'm glad it didn't turn into Brolin vs del Toro like the preview showed. Music, writing, acting was all good, it's nice to have some subtlety vs overdone everything.
