Stealing a Bridge

Work crews are essentially invisible man. Nobody pays attention to a work crew. You pull up with a truck and a crane and look like you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing and you can walk away with anything.

Nobody looks at the workers. They are simply part of the scenery. Think about that when it comes to blending in.

A hard hat and a hi Viz vest and you can take home the Brooklyn Bridge

There have been a number of thefts of valuable Civil War antiques such as cannons done this way. Work crew shows up looking like they’re removing it for restoration or park work and suddenly a $30,000 artillery tube is gone.

It’s something municipalities should be considering as there are a lot of thefts happening. Bronze tubes and bronze doors from crypt seem to be very popular. And the recyclers don’t seem to give a shit they just melt down the chunks.

And I am sure some of the tubes are showing up in collections because for the most part nobody has bothered to record numbers and details from stuff that has sat in front of a City Hall for 150 years.

If not for John McClane, Simon Peter-Gruber would have pulled off the largest payday in the history of man.

Carmen Sandiego has been pulling stunts like this for decades, even being so bold as to steal the Tower Bridge at one point... I'm not impressed.

Had a coworker stabbed a year or so ago while he was working a construction detail.

Dude wore a construction vest/hard hat, just walked up and got stabby.

He ate some copper jacketed Winchesters for his cunning ways.

Think about the neighborhood cat for a second.

You look across the street and see him skulking through the plants like he's hunting something. You generally stop what you're doing and watch because he's got your attention.

The next day you come outside and the same cat is walking across the lawn. What is your reaction?
You dismiss him because he's not doing anything out of the ordinary.

It's the same with people.
If you are doing something and constantly looking around, people notice it because you look nervous.

If you go about your business like you're supposed to be doing it, no-one notices anything.

An old boss once told me just take shit like you own it. Nobody will question you.

We used to say equipment ownership was a stencil and a can of paint.

Speshully Uncle Sam's equipment. 😂😂

Light bulbs for our tents...
I remember being in Bahrain and having none. Not one.

Went to all the admin tents and just started taking them with a co-worker.
Someone finally piped up and asked why we were taking them.
Told the Major she could take it up with the Colonel if she had a problem with it. She just sat back down.

Took all of our newly acquired bulbs back to the work tents and quarters and lit them up like Christmas trees.

Any time we needed something, we just drove up in an unmarked vehicle and loaded up.

Working construction in Seattle and surrounding cities I can confirm. More then one business has let me wander around their store/property in my hard hat and vest. I just walked up and told them I needed access (I was legit working though)
Sign says do not enter. I walk right in because I'm working.
Doesn't hurt to have a few road cones, hydrant wrench, manhole pick and you can do and take just about anything.

Cops don't pay attention to you either. I can block traffic or divert traffic with a few signs. Hell the cop will help ya if ya ask.

Hard hat and a vest. Make sure they are dirty. The dirtier and used the better.

😂
One of the concrete foundation crews I worked with had a guy who was a bit of a famous tweaker.
Years ago him and a few friends blocked off a lane on the 520 bridge in Seattle and stole a bunch of the aluminum guard railings.
They had stolen the hard hats, vests, cones and signage from another job site.

As they say, there's only one thief in the Marine Corps...

I have walked through/into many places with a tool bag and a uniform shirt. When questioned I say that I am there for a gas leak. Instant fear on their face and you walk to wherever. Some even ask me if they should get out. I usually tell them that if you see me running. It's probably too late but you may have a chance. Then you get the ohh shit look.

100%
I’ve had to work in restricted areas quite a few times and if you just waltz right in like you own the place or look like a worker bee nobody will question you. Hi viz jacket, hard hat, clip board, and a flashing yellow light stuck to the top of your truck or hard hat and not a single person will ever question you.

Not sure if it ever 'really' happened, but supposedly in the 1950's at McGill University in Montreal... outside a fraternity there was a street crew digging up the road... And the Fraternity guys went out to the construction guys and said "Hey, some guys from another 'frat are coming over dressed up as police to tell you guys to quit work... and leave the street outside our house all torn up as a prank."

The foreman said "thanks... we'll be on the lookout for them. They won't stop our job!"

Then they called the police and said "Hey, there are bunch of guys from another Fraternity outside our house and they are dressed as construction workers and tearing up the street in front of our house. They going to just leave it all torn up as a prank on us."

The police sergeant said "Thanks... we'll take care of them right now."

Legend has it... it took 45 minutes to break up the fight.

True or not? You decide...

This happened about 10 miles from me.
This is on the Kenmore leg not far from Rubber City Armory

The foot bridges in Akron either got replaced or dismantled depending on the survey of their use during the rebuilding of Route 76 & Rt 8

There was more than one guy involved, it was more than a few.
A lot of these bridges are used for crime
