I wouldn't be afraid, but not my first choice. Some people will say that they dont make the minimum 12 inches of penetration reliably. Hornady loads the Vmax in its TAP lineup, and real world results have been excellent.

Being that you're in Los Angeles barring anything
short of a riot.... no pun intended, the press or
for that matter the DA would not be too kind with
the use of an AR type weapon. Then with those
zombie killing home made bullet you specially made
would just make matters worse.
But, in reference to your question, I'd buy a box of plain
55gn Win ball. It will be more effective than any handgun
round. And, you used it because it's "target" ammo and that's
all you use your AR for right? wink wink

A local coroner for the TPD wrote a report on a guy that was shot with a 60gr VMax at aprox 20y. His report said the victim was shot center mass in the sternum area. He basically concluded that the chest cavity looked as if a grenade went off inside the chest.

Actually the swat community switched from
the 9mm subguns to the 556 carbines for that
very reason. The 556 or 223 penetrated far
less than the nine. On both humans znd walls.
Start at 24gns with the H335. Very similar to 744.

The 60 grain Vmax is my plinking/varmint hunting load. I use TAC, and have went up to 26 grains. It was a bit warm there so I backed it down to 25.8, and accuracy improved. This was with mixed brass and CCI small rifle mag primers.

I was thinking about this very thing tonight on whether the V-Max would make a descent home defense round, Im shooting a 40gr out of my 700VS so Im just guessing that wouldnt be a good choice, I had planned on trying some 55gr Hornady or Noslers out of my AR Varminter those should pretty much be the same.

The Hodgdon site has lots and lots of data for H335 with all kinds of bullet weights. They are a pretty good place to start.
The 60Vmax will kill whatever you shoot with it. I don't use homerolled ammo for home defense though.
A 223 is way mightier than the 10mm auto that sleeps next to my alarm clock and the 10 will kill anything walking into my house at night... on 2 or 4 legs.

my shooting buddy shoots 40gr vmaxs out of his ruger m77. they are accurate and I was amazed at the large .4" or better hole they left in in my .22 swinging targets at 100 yds so I bet the 60 grs would be even better. but there is a term call excessive force when it comes to home defense. I would be scared of a judge if I were to shoot someone with an ar type rifle especially with handloaded ammo for that purpose. Nothing wrong with buckshot, I keep a .40 loaded with 16rds of 165gr winchester ranger hp for home defense and hope i never have to use it.

That's good to know. I loaded up 1.5k of 60grn Ballistic Tips backed up w/ 23.5 grains of RE15 in LC brass and CCI 400s. Cranked it out on the 550B and it shoots great. 2780fps and it matches the BDC in my ACOG fair enough. I've only killed jack rabbits w/ them but the results are impressive.

We issue the 60 gr TAP ammo at work for our Patrol Rifle program. Hornady loads the 60 grain Vmax bullet into this ammo.
We do a demo in each class where we shoot a gallon of water with a 55 grain ball round, it goes in and right out. We then shoot a gallon of water with the TAP, this one looks like the round explodes inside of it.

It's only relevant for a civil suit after the criminal charges are dropped or not even filed. Many states allow the scum bag or the scum bag's family to sue you for violation of the rights or wrongful death or something like that.
They can't stick you in prison for it, but they can try to make you/your insurance pay through the nose for shooting them. Using homerolled ammo that can be called "extra deadly" is generally not a good thing.
The only times that it can help the case is if you're downloading the ammo for overpenetration reasons.

that is exactly why i'm looking into v-max bullets. I don't want to have bullets penetrating my neighbors walls.
Maybe i should just stick to my Remington 870.

Your on the right track with the Vmax. It is deadly, and will not overpenetrate. Do not download it. It depends on that velocity for its explosive expansion. Id also bet that being able to put a hornady tech on the stand and have them testify that it is the same bullet used in its police lineup of ammunition would be a plus in a court situation.

Back on topic, 60grn Ballistics aren't that much different than V-maxs, but that'll be what the perp on the receiving end of a B&E @ my house will be getting.

My primary home defense and concealed carry weapons are 45's loaded with Winchester Ranger SXT 230g factory ammo. If I need to go to a long arm CQB-style weapon then it's my AR loaded with my own 60g VMax handloads. Beyond that and we're all in a world of shit anyway.

I think you can go higher. I have worked up to 26 grains of TAC behind the 60 grain Vmax. Settled on 25.8 as accuracy was better there. Unfortunately I dont yet have a chrony.

Those look about 200 fps slow, I'd keep climbing. The 18" barrel should be getting them close to 3k I think.

I've found the 60gr V-Max to be one of the most accurate bullets used in any of my AR's.
When I pulled apart a Hornady TAP round, the powder looked just like Ramshot TAC, so that's what I use. I believe it was 24.5 gr of powder (I'll have to go home to check for sure), but it duplicated exactly the Hornady load.
I would definately use it for home defense and have my AR close by loaded with these.
I've found the 60gr V-Max to be one of the most accurate bullets used in any of my AR's.

I loaded some 60gr Vmax pills for my daughter's 223 mod7 over 23.2 gr of Benchmark, and it is a very accurate load and very brutal. She shot her first deer on Sunday evening with that round, and with one shot to the bucks neck at 115yds it destroyed it!!! Wish I would have teken pictures of the destruction it did inside, it literally looked like a bomb went off inside! So I definately say 2 thumbs up for the 60gr vmax for home defense, as a matter of fact, I just loaded up a 30rd mag for my home defense m4 with that exact load!!!

Hate to resurrect an old post, but to add some credence to the 60gr VMAX I have a buddy that trains the regional HRT team in Montana and all they run with in their carbines is 60gr VMAX. Terminally, they're absolutely nasty on meaty subjects. The extra mass helps them penetrate glass a bit better than the 55 or 53 grain VMAX, and they are still plenty fast yet they wont' go through more than 3 or 4 sheets of drywall, max. They're fantastic rounds for defensive use or pest control. Also, Freedom Munitions currently has their remanufactured 60 grain VMAX rounds for like58 cents apiece. I ordered 600 of them today.
Various stuff from what I've seen. I've shot quite a bit of it and never had an issue with it. In various calibers. Never heard any issues with folks having guns blow up on them. That seems like something that would have been about enough to run them out of business. Shoot, I bet I've shot 10,000 rounds of ammo from them.
Not near that but definitely a few thousand 55 gr remains from them and no issues besides not great SDs or accuracy but that was expected.
The new 60 VMAX grouped approx 1 MOA x 9 shots. 6 shots were approx 0.7 MOA out of ARs.
I’ll have to look at the reman 60 VMAX brass when I get home since that’s what was actually in question.
