I've thought about trying to mod a mag to work. My 7 saum is very long. I'd have to knock out the plate in the back and make a spacer kit like for dashes

I know there isn’t a locking detent index machined into the barrel on these.
Do you mark or indicate a set position when you change between barrels? Any POI changes barrel to barrel between conversions?
Like, if you marked an arbitrary 6 o’clock and next time rotated it to 9 o’clock, ya seeing a POI shift?
I know every barrel has a POI shift; have my 6.5 and .338LM barrels DOPED well, but those are machined with an index, so it’s reproducible.
I’m pondering, probably fruitlessly, if the lack of the *exact same rotation of the barrel* will make *that* much of a difference.

You shouldn't be rotating the barrel at all. It indexes off of the feed ramp (unless you have a Gen 1) and then headspaces off of the bolt. The locking detent isn't really needed. The steps you should be doing when installing a conversion:
1. fit barrel
2. close bolt on barrel
3. tighten 4 screws on the right of receiver.
Done.

Like others have said it’ll naturally seat itself in off the feed ramp. I follow the same steps as @Dogtown

Got some dry fire in on the SRS last night. Turns out the “0”s on the spines of the wife’s fashion magazines at about 15 m are close to a 1/10 mil point of aim. It’s remarkably clear if you would have missed after the trigger press.

I'll just add to what the others have said about how the barrel extension indexes off the feed ramp that the locking cam is only there to prevent the barrel from falling out whilst the clamping bolts are loose. For all intents and purposes, that locking detent can be considered a nice, but essentially redundant feature.

This a purely theoretical question but here goes. If you were to make something like the SAC 223 conversion kit for the HTI and chambered it in something like .300NM with a 24 inch barrel, could you get the weight down to around 15 pounds? Maybe shorten the handguard as well?
I am hoping to find some guidance on what 7mm cartridge would work and perform best in a short 16-18” barrel configuration. I’ve been looking into the 7 REM mag and 7 SAUM mainly, but open to other options. I do not reload so currently leaning towards 7RM. But any real world experience you all have in the short barrel configuration 7mm’s would be greatly appreciated.
I think it would be cool if someone would make an adaptor kit so you could use SRS conversion kits in the HTI. Mag and barrel adaptor would be easy. The bolt would be harder, but you could make bolt heads instead
The original SRS design was intended to handle up to the Cheytac family of cartridges, but it would have required the system to be scaled up a bit too much to make the smaller cartridge support kind of pointless.
Which eberlestock pack does yours fit in? I use the gunrunner now for my regular bolt guns but I was looking at the euro with the bigger scabbard to fit my srs
I personally use the G4, but I also use the G2 Gunslinger and the X31 LowdragII all of which have the "tactical" scabbard which accommodate the SRS easily.
Interesting. My thought process was a semi for medium cartridges (ARC or Creedmoor), a short action magnum bolt gun (personal preference), and a Lapua magnum capable HTI. Mind you, it was strictly a theoretical idea. I'm not in the market right now.
Or you could single feed 33/37XC or similar into an SRS. If what you are shooting is beyond the 300NM range then you probably don't NEED to mag feed.
My most ELR barrel is a 36” .338LM Improved 40 - throws 300gr bullets at 3100fps and mag fed.
There are a couple of recent posts on pg14 of the 7 SAUM reloading thread with data on 18” barrels/speeds.
If you don’t reload though it’s moot to consider the SAUM. Maybe see what the 7 PRC looks like when it launches.

How many people here hunt with their DTA's? What is the weight of your DTA hunting rigs, and what barrel specs (length, contour)?
I briefly hunted with mine in NZ. I used a 20” 6.5x47L on deer and an 18” 12.7x48mm on boars. It’s a heavy platform and that weight really adds up on a long stalk. If I had to do it all again with an SRS I’d use a lightweight scope like an NX8 1-8x and a 16” barrel to keep it down as much as possible. The S&B 5-25x I was using was too much and too heavy for hunting.
This is my 16” 308. Could shed 7oz going to a Vortex LHT and probably a few more oz switching to tall rings instead of this heavy mount. That’d put it very close to 9lbs. Add 12oz or so for a suppressor and whatever the magazine weights. Not a mountain rifle but very very manageable as a hunting rifle. I’m having a 458 American barrel made on a “Hunter” contour barrel for sub 200 yard whitetail hunting. Should be even lighter with that large of bore cut out of the barrel.
I did Colorado elk last year. Bringing it to Newfie for moose and SA for kudu this fall and next spring respectively.
It’s a hog. No 2 ways about it. 7# mountain rifle she’s not. And you’re going to be humping it as friends make fun of ya.
I used a stock SRS in 338 LM. Athlon ares scope. Big thing: patrol carry, barrel down; tight to chest.
If you’re hitting 3-400yd shots, who cares.
If yours stretching to 800… maybe a big old platform is worth the weight.

Slammed some whitetail last year with my DT A2 Covert.
Running a SAC 16.5” 450 Bushmaster in their “DT Countour” spiral fluted. Not exactly running it as light weight as I can with a TT315P on top and a suppressor. Barrel alone is 3lb 4oz.. fully rigged with VERS 458 can is 13.5-14lbs
I’ll tell you what though, that 450bushmaster 240gr bullet smacking those whitetail at 250yds plus sounds like a baseball bat hitting a punching bag… all you hear is THUD/SMACK/THUMP.. no question whether you hit it or not.

Asking as I'm just getting into hunting. Just purchased an 18" 6.5 Creedmoor 3B contour barrel for my Mausingfield PRS rig, which will be put into a KRG Bravo for hunting. Hunting weight will be about ~13 lbs, so not light. Just don't have the funds to build a dedicated hunting rifle right now to the quality I would want it to be, so this is definitely a compromise.
I also have a .300NM ELR rig that I don't really use, as I don't have a spot to really stretch it out. As much as I love my .300NM and still want to shoot it occasionally, I have a hard time justifying a dedicated rifle for it when I hardly shoot it.
This has me wondering if I could consolidate my hunting and ELR rifles. Especially since I don't have the budget to fully build up a dedicated hunting rifle. Perhaps I could trade my custom .300NM rifle for a DTA SRS, and get a hunting and ELR barrel for it.

If I was doing 20mi days every day at altitude at 65… I’d not.
At 35, 6’0, 220#… 19# vs 13# just doesn’t seem to matter.
Option B is just keep the current .300NM, and acquire another Mausingfield action and lighter scope.
