I got an estate, ideas for a new build?

A really good friend of mine recently passed and I got his shooting stuff. He was pretty big into regional PRS shoots and was an equipment and methods perfectionist. Everything is top quality………

I have his Impact 6mm GT rifle (pretty heavy), extra barrels, scopes, bullets, brass, etc. I don’t really like this rifle (other than sentimental reasons) and I’m thinking it’s too target & steel specialized for me. I already have a real accurate 6.5x47 rifle for steel and whitetail. I’m thinking about rebarreling the 6mmGT to a 7mm something (WSM?) more suitable for mule deer and perhaps elk.

Looking for input on what hide members would do?
build another 6.5x47?
build a 7mm short action something?
what barrel would you use, Proof research?
sell the 6mmGT?

It’s personal preference, but due to the situation I wouldn’t sell it personally. I’d probably keep it, and shoot it. You’ll fall in love with the little 6’s.

If your 100% against it, a new bolt would get you a mag face and a new tube could be spun up by anyone. But I’d recommend the 7 Saum if you want bigger but not big.

That 6 GT (and your 6.5) is perfectly suitable for mule deer. If you really feel the need to change something, rebarrel your rifle, keep the 6 for targets and deer.

You could always build a .284 Norma, or a 7mm SS (Sherman Shortmag). It's quite an impressive little cartridge.

First, sorry to hear about your friend passing. It looks like he had very good taste and a quality rifle.

I would probably keep the rifle as is as you would have no problem filling your freezer with the current setup.

You will likely learn to love the 6mm. And the GT is a proven, accurate round for most hunting you will encounter.
