Thinking Athlon Midas BTR Gen 2 HD 4.5x27x50 SFP MIL IR for my 18inch bbl AR15 Wylde 223. Want to shoot out to 500yds outdoors and 25yds indoors. I like the APRS4 reticle and IR may help indoors. I know it is heavy but, I am a MIL guy and cannot find anything lighter with SFP MIL and comparable reticle. Doug has them on sale for $509.99. Any suggestions?

What's your price point, how much magnification do you want, and what is your use case? Depending on your use, a 4.5x27x50 is a ton of magnification for a 5.56 gun at 500 yards, and I've found that a quality 10 or 16 power optic will be more than sufficient out past 500 yards.

Under $550 and I want at least 18x. I have 81 year old eyes and astigmatism. MIL/MIL and SFP is a must.

Curious...why SFP and a MIL reticle. I'm guessing that at some specific magnification, the reticle and the image are in sync but the mils would be off for any other magnification.

Correct?

I prefer MILLIRADIANS OVER MOA. I have experience with MILS. I have an Athlon Midas tac FFP and the reticle is difficult to see and use at below 12x.

I picked up one of the first gen models of that scope when Doug was clearing them out and I’m pretty darn pleased with it. Can only imagine the new version is better yet.

SFP reticles have their place, I run them on some rifles. This scope is the best deal you'll find to meet your requirements. Glass on par with all the $2-3k scopes. Tooless zero. Red/Green illum. Focus down to 20 yards. I'm using one on an M1A and I kind of want to pick up another while they're so cheap for a future rifle.

Edit: didn't see your $550 budget in your original post.
