As funny as that seems, I spent a frustrating week trying to get my FIL’s mail forwarded to the estate attorney after he passed. Idiots in the USPS said that in order to forward his mail, the request had to be signed by him! This is after I showed them the death certificate and the power of attorney documents.

They suggested that I take a mail forwarding card back and get his signature! Or that maybe I should sign his name…right next to where it says that there is a penalty of prison time and $5000 for falsely signing that card. I ended up having to make an appointment at a central office and then waited for over an hour for some idiot to question me all over again. This so that I could carry out about 50 pounds of junk mail. Good times!

I'm fighting the exact same battle at this very same moment.

And just think.......the same qualifications for USPS are probably similar to the 87,000 IRS positions. We are screwed.

Afterwards, I spoke to the attorney and he said, “Oh, we just send in a card and sign it with the deceased person’s name and they automatically forward it to us.”

In retrospect, it does make sense that a person with power of attorney could sign the deceased’s name, since they are the legal person representing them.
