Now that Im in Oklahoma I've had the chance to be around the bison and learned about them. I always thought bison and buffalo were the same or almost the same critter. Not so, and in fact the buffalo is not native to America. They are native to Africa, and Asia.

So where, you ask, is the anomaly?

William F Cody, aka 'Buffalo Bill' should have been 'Bison Bill'.

Buffalo Bob Smith (re" Howdy Doody) should have been 'Bison Bob Smith'.

The Buffalo Bills should be the 'Bison Bills'.

The Buffalo Soldiers should be the 'Bison soldiers'.

    This could be game changing.

    Fight Me.

Let's not forget, the Carabao is a type of Buffalo, but not the same as a water Buffalo.
I wonder how many soft tacos you can make with the average bison?

I'll let the Choctaws know they named Yanush (Buffalo) incorrectly. All this time they've had Buffalo Valley, and they should have called it Bison Valley.

Damn little red devils, they screw up everything they touch...

Leave it to a Califorinian to move here and tell us how we’ve been fuckin up! Typical.

As the Choctaws never encountered any buffalo, it is a big stretch to suggest they have a word for buffalo. More appropriately, the white devil mistranslated the Choctaw word for bison as buffalo…

If you've been here more than a day and that's the most fucked up thing you've found, you aren't paying attention.

we did the same thing by naming the wapiti an Elk, when in reality the Elk (Cervus canadensis) is a relative of the red deer, and the moose (Alces alces) has always been referred to as an Elk since the time of the ancient Greeks and Germanic tribes.

I’m just waiting for OP to jump in a pen with a Cape Buffalo, they’re cuddly.

All I know abut the Choctaws is in the song Choctaw Bingo.........and something about a big ole' pistol made by bad ass Hebrews.

    LMAO 'Bison Bill'.

I'd have thought Dr. Lecter would have caught that. He caught the fact the pre moth larva found in Bill's victim's throat was a 'pupa.'

They started getting bussed into Oklahoma (actually they call it the trail of tears) in the 1830s from Mississippi. About 30 years later the whites started killing off their buffalo, just like the rest of the country (to keep it relevant to the conversation).

However, there were a lot of small local tribes already in this land for who knows how long before.

I dug these up leveling the ground for the foundation of my house. There are a couple of distinctly different styles of arrowheads here, most likely from different tribes and different eras. I also have about 75 broken or partial examples. I think they held arrowhead-making camp where I built my house.

I'm sure the tribal representatives would lecture me until I died for saying this... But as far as I'm concerned they got the nicest allotment of land in the state.

About 450 pounds worth based on what I got back from my bull. You could either use the ground meat or shred a roast and use that.

They like it if you walk straight up to them and touch their snout

Don’t forget to make the horns with your fingers so they know you’re friendly.

Watched one gore the almost dead Buffalo that another hunter shot, taxidermist was gonna be cursing that one up and down while he fixed the holes. After seeing mine shrug off a 405gr slug at 1500 fps impact speeds through the arteries above the heart I sure a shit wouldn’t want to be anywhere near a live one when it was pissed.

The crew at the Wichita Game Preserve. A couple of the young ones were wandering over towards me when the old bull let me know I better be cool. They make a really deep rumble.

Seems like there is lot of that with animals in the west. The cicada is often called a locust, and a locust called a grasshopper. The pronghorn is called an Antelope, and every snake is a rattle snake.

The "Buffalo Bills" should be tossed out of the league as they are a complete embarrassment to the region which they represent.

Under scientific classification, the American Plains Buffalo is listed as genus Bison, species bison bison, and subspecies Bison bison bison.
