And or jealous of the person that works double the hours they do.

The parasitic .gov “workers” and their 4 day weeks and the welfare state exacerbate the problem

So you're hiring. I'm lazy and will not work many hours. Will that get me an interview.

You’re supposed to let him figure that out at a later date. First thing you need to tell him is that you are trustworthy, dependable, and able to do anything he needs done in the course of the day. Then you advise him to ask your last 12 employers how invaluable you were to them.

Screw that noise! That's for people who have the ambition to put on a show when the boss is watching.

If you can tear stuff up at break record pace, your hired!😂
That sounds too hard. Ide rather do the exact minimum that needs to be done then take a nap and go to lunch. You do buy lunch right? Nothing to hoppy, I hate most craft beer. Just somewhere they pour a Blue Moon over a wedge of Naval orange, and make good hot wings.

If we're not back in time to punch out then I get time and a half for overtime.

I'd hate to be a company or even a boss trying to find decent help right now. I'd love to see all but 5 out of 20 mechanics that we have fired but I know that replacing them with anything better wouldn't be an easy task. They are fucking lazy and have no ability to use a computer or a multimeter to troubleshoot anything. They load the parts cannon and hope something fixes the problem. Management isn't any better, no accountability for anything and can't plan anything. The workforce sucks compared to 20 years ago and is only getting worse.

    OP with his latest hire:

    Working for Deersniper.gif

I hired a carpenter once, I framed new homes at the time. After about an hour he comes up to me and says” uhm, how many hours do we work in a day?”
    I said” what? Why?”
he says, “well I want to pace myself”
I looked at him and said “ 4 hours a day, go like hell”.
I think he lasted 3 days.

You're not wrong about that. I've been turning wrenches for almost 20 years and I've worked with a lot of people. I can count the number of mechanics on one hand that I would let touch anything I own.
I had my turn working in dealership service departments back in the 1990's. In every shop I've been in, only about 10% of the techs can work a vehicle from bumper to bumper and diagnose accurately. I was one of the 10% and got tired of getting stuck with all the time consuming ass kicking one-off jobs. Meanwhile, the B-techs took home a bigger paycheck from turning more hours just doing simple maintenance service work. Management was too scared to give them something hard for fear of them screwing it up. Good techs eventually leave out of disgust. I did and I am a one man show now. No employees needed or wanted.

I was always amazed at the amount of WASTED education people "claimed" to have while I worked half as hard. My boss was always saying "You did what? How did you do that?".    Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm...............I just explained it to you.

    Something caused this outburst.
Cliffhangers suck, so what's the deal?
Lay down on the couch and tell us all about it. I'm sure that the Pit will hand out sage advice

Exactly what I'm dealing with everywhere I've worked but I'm hourly. I'd leave the trade if I was flat rate. I end up with almost every electrical problem and anything that involves a laptop. Yesterday is a good example, nobody knew how to measure hertz on a hydraulic driven generator including the boss. That's pretty basic shit with a multimeter. I'm wanting to open my own shop, I know that is the only way I'll be happy.

This is why I try to do everything I can myself to my vehicle's and it's not that I don't mind paying if the work was done right, it's just, I don't trust these degenerates to change my oil or even an air filter correctly.

Last time I got new tires I get in my truck to leave after paying the bill and I notice one lug nut missing from the drivers rear then I do a walk around and notice another lug nut missing from the front passenger. I go inside and ask what's up with the missing lug nuts and the guy says man your lug nuts were really hard to get off and two got messed up. I said so that is it you just don't say anything to the customer and was going to let me drive off hoping I wouldn't notice. He was like oh we meant to tell you. Long story short they about stripped every single lug nut and they all had to be replaced because one of the guys used the wrong socket on them. (2017 F150 21MM) should be pretty common right not like it was some rare vehicle.

I get really pissed with how my ability to diagnose and solve shit jobs that come in (loads of warranty crap that pay half the time the job actually takes), is rewarded with more shit jobs. Having to juggle multiple cars because the guys who book jobs couldn't plan their way through an open door.

Meanwhile the morons across the shop, who manage to fuck up changing spark plugs and such, get all the easy well paid stuff.

Thats pretty much how I ended up doing this as a career. I couldn't see paying the prices they wanted for repairs and get someone to do a half assed job. I could buy the specialty tools and do it myself cheaper than a shop. Then I know what I had at the end of the job. Both the other mechanics did a wheel seal on the steer axle of a semi and the brake pads were about wore out. Yet, they didn't check or pull the other side and do brakes on them.

I'm glad I don't deal with warranty. I love when I have 4 or 5 projects going at a time while coworkers complain there's nothing to do. I get a lot of rework from incompetence and laziness. They cut corners and it usually comes back to bite me in the ass. They'll do a dot inspection and a month later I end up spending a week or two repairing stuff they let go.

Poorly maintained air systems on these trucks resulted in diff locks not working. Light has been on the dash showing engaged but let's just send it anyways. It's amazing what an air dryer cartridge every annual inspection will prevent.

Ain't it the truth. I had a tech that constantly pissed and moaned about not getting enough hours. I once asked hid did he want to know how to get more hours. Sure. Quit smoking and leave your smart phone in your toolbox until you go home and I guarantee you will bill at least ten hours more per week. Rolled his eyes and walked away.

Had another tech who could bill 50 hours in a 40 hour woke week. He billed as many as 80 without working more than 55. The guy above hated him.

First guy was single and wanted to be out the door at five and partied a lot. Second guy had four kids and a stay at home wife. Guess who got the best jobs.

I gave up. I’m done accepting new clients because I refuse to hire right now.

On a related note, I will never…NEVER hire a woman under 45 again. I used to deny the gender wage gap on the grounds that it didn’t make economic sense for employers. After my first two female employees, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s entirely possible said wage gap exists, and for good reason.

Last week I had both females call out on me. I came to find out the first called in sick because her hair dresser got pregnant and was going on leave. She had to get her hair did immediately. The second had to watch her kids because the babysitter was going on vacation. She’s thinking about having another kid too, which means my shit gets tuned upside down for months on end. Never again. Ever.

Worked in the trade when I was young.
Some jobs ATE MY LUNCH. Crate engines were passed from mech to mech.
    My turn came up :(
    8 hours book for a 1970 Cadillac.
    I've been lucky.
I've NEVER have to pay to have a shop work on my vehicle (72 now)
(except tire changes, just not worth it to do at home)
Bought a used 2003 Tundra in 2017 with 193k and no evidence of a belt change.
Pulled battery cables one morning, driving next afternoon.
Wife and I saved some $$.
    Helping.jpg

A couple months back I got a miss code, #5. Swapped the aftermarket 5 year old coil on plug from 5 to 3 and code went to #3.
Tossed in one of the factory coils I kept and running again. This time the computer saved some time. I know people that can't even change a serpentine belt. Used to offer to help, not anymore.

Wow, all the bitching about the hard technical work. I've been doing the"hard" stuff for 30 years. Let the monkeys and tards change brakes, oil, clutches, ball joints etc....I have better things to do. I only do electrical and diesel engine work on two brands, more than enough work!

The real problem is charging appropriately for the diagnosis involved. Changing parts is easy, knowing what to change, apparently is hard if you are liberal or retarded.

Yes the quest for a decent employee is epic - all the ones I’ve ever had that were worth a shit learned the trade in a few years and went out on their own. Good for them. I’ve had two epically bad workers this year - holy shit family trouble drug troubles, emotional troubles, dumb as fuck and can’t show up on time or stay a full day or remember from day to day or even hour to hour . Holy shit even writing this post I need a drink.

Mildly retarded, though more like an autistic savant, but yes "employees." Maybe employers need to work on changing their screening process, garbage in = garbage out.

In other words, don't change employees like parts with a scatter gun, diagnose the problem. All problems have solutions.

The bear pit is where all the big brains come to solve their work problems.....

Mmmmm, that comes with its own problems. A dealership I worked at years ago was looking for cheap apprentices with an ad on Craigslist(lol). We got some potato that had been helping his uncle refurb houses for a while. He had to buy and ship an auto tool set & box to the shop the week before he started(red flag one). Instead of sticking him with various mechanics to actually learn something(the smart thing to do), he was given nothing but services, brake jobs, & pdi’s. That’s not his fault but it didn’t sit well with anyone. Oh, but then he started bragging about turning so many hours. The last time I acknowledged him, he asked my advice about something but someone in the shop said he asked him about the same thing a minute ago. Someone saved his job early too, unfortunately. He was doing a brake job on a fixed caliper with the little plate and retaining pins. Instead of asking for help(he may not have gotten it though, because he was a douche) he grabbed a giant socket and was about to crack a bolt loose that would have split the caliper apart. Someone asked if that was really how that comes apart. Then he went looking for help.

    TL;DR

Cheap help is cheap for a reason. Caveat emptor

A friend owns a few McDonalds.
She has echoed similar sentiments as above and now hires almost exclusively boomers, most in their 50’s-60’s, most of whom still have a work ethic (to go with their lumbago).
She pays them well and they do team interviews of new prospects, which tends to weed out those that don’t fit in with her existing crews.

How McDonalds is still in business blows my mind.

I always take note of the three or four cars on the McDonalds drive thru line as I pull into the chick-fil-a line next door that’s 30 cars deep.

Most of the time, one or two of those cars is still waiting as I pull away with food.

At this point I’m pretty sure I could run a better fast food joint with a staff of circus chimps.

I was a Cop for 40 years. 98% of the people I worked with were professional, competent people. We work long hours for short money. We have to deal with people at their worst moments in their lives if they are the victim and the most evil people our society produces. Unlike your job some 200+ of us don't go home after shift. They give up their lives for YOU so that you can go about your business. You don't have to sleep with one eye open to protect your life and property. People like you don't like Cops either, because you had to meet one after you broke the law, heard only one side of a story or wanted to be one but couldn't. Go ahead and don't like Cops all you need to, but try to imagine what our society would be like if there weren't any. As a PMC I've worked contracts in places without the rule of law or anybody to in force them. Believe me you don't want that for yourself or your family.

Keep on smoking that blue line crap.

Your not even in the top ten most dangerous professions.
mine is way way higher on the list than yours.

Your f ing blind if you can’t see cops are nothing more than mosty incompetent praetorian guard at this point.
From protecting the Burn Loot and Murder and arresting those who defended themselves
to having zero time for property and other crime unless it negatively affects a cop/judge/politician
But always plenty of time to tax and harass the tax slave.

Lol at why people don’t like cops.
