Well, here's what the US Army issues. Pretty much just light kevlar for shrapnel protection. I've got a couple pairs somewhere, pretty comfortable to be honest.

Shit, I remember getting issued those. I took a knife and stabbed the Kevlar part and it went right through. If it can’t stop a knife I’m not sure it would stop a determined piece of shrapnel.

Most kevlar won't stop a knife. It's designed to grab rough edges of shrapnel/bullet and slow it down. A knife just splits the fibers apart and goes thru

That’s what I’ve been told. And that’s probably the case for improvised shrapnel. But a few years back I got to handle some of the shrapnel that a 155 produces. I don’t have much of a Fires background but that was some wicked sharp half moon shaped stuff that seemed to me would slice right through Kevlar better than my ER knife did.
