Surprisingly, there is some science there.
I cleaned shitty water for over 30 years.
Any idiot can making drinking water from river water. Clarify, balance the ph, disinfect. Simple process.

Without getting too in depth....
River rocks have growth on them. Biological film, otherwise known as zoogleal mass.
As the water flows across this zoogleal mass "critters" use nutrients from the water. This is a simple biological process you'll see in trickling filters and other "fixed film" biologic processes.
You create a controlled biologic process, so the receiving stream doesn't suffer total oxygen depletion, through BOD or Biochemical Oxygen Demand.

Unfortunately it takes a lot more rocks, and "detention time" than 7 rocks, to make life miserable for many pathogens. Even then, if the water source can be polluted at any point, all bets are off.
Clear doesn't mean pure always.
I've seen properly collected well samples pop positive on a bac-t test lots of times.
Contaminated wells are more common than you'd think, even today.

Many of the contaminates that are harmful in the long run are difficult/expensive or impossible to remove. Meds like birth control go right through the system. Arsenic, uranium, mercury (where I live). Most people see clear water and like you said think it good.

I think toilet to tap or pumping treated water back into aquifers is a bad idea.

Voting is a scam to make the people seem like they matter, put the screen shut and pull a lever . Very similar experience would be like when the doctor checks your prostate and tells you to turn around and bend over, you have no idea if he's using his finger or if he has a very small dick.

I am not objecting to that, what I do find in extreme poor taste is when a story is linked someone has died, or better yet the child born two months ago is not on a ventilator, and someone comes up and says no refunds.

Pretty cold.

Trust me I know the full court press, I did not loose my job, but it was one decision away by one man. I do get it, and in some cases it is applicable, in others it is just bad taste.

And I would like to think that most people that see a news story that is about the unusual number of new born babies on ventilators do not feel the cold hearted no refund. Some here do.
