ARE PROOF RIFLES WORTH THE MONEY ?

I'm looking at a PROOF TUNDRA or would i be better off going custom build ? i feel like PROOF rifles are high priced and know nothing about them i have their barrels on other rifles and love them just don't know if their rifles are worth $7,800 if anyone has experience with PROOF rifles please help me understand what you get for the high cost of the rifle

I need some more details on the “sub 1/2 MOA” guarantee.

Carbon ruckus barrel 1k
Ruckus action 1.4k
Tt diamond 300

That’s 2,700 in a barreled action, leaving 5k for the stock and smithing fees? I’m sure map would be a better comparison than msrp but msrp is what’s posted and pretty expensive for what you can put together yourself for half that. Proof makes good stuff but not that good.

I have not personally seen/handled /shot one ... But the Springfield Waypoint seems like it would be very close to the Proof for less than a third of the price.

Fierce is about half

A full custom top-tier build would also be about half

I can usually understand the high price of quality products ... AI comes to mind, and I am convinced they are worth every penny. ZCO is another example. However, I cannot come close to understanding the list price for a Proof rifle. Maybe I am missing something ...

I wonder if Proof building/selling rifles is kinda like a contractor who does not want to do a job on a customer's house. Rather than saying "No" to the job, the contractor throws out an outrageously high bid. This way, the contractor (Proof) wins either way.

Makes zero sense. They make barrels. They CHOOSE to get into the rifle building game. Do you really think people were begging Proof to build them rifles? Oh PLEASE PROOF, make us rifles that cost twice what the best smiths in the country charge using budget and shitty components.

Well I’ve heard enough people describe proof as being a lottery ticket. Might get a winner. Might get a dud

Plus the people with shot stringing after a few rounds

You can look up the components for each rifle. That doesnt even get into the issues with proof barrels, especially their chambered prefits.

Zermatt and Lone Peak actions, carbon stocks etc.

Was just searching around and found that Tag firearms has a few Elevation MTR’s in stock for $3400, which seems downright reasonable.

Ive chambered and threaded ~15 or so Proof blanks. Theyre straight, the interior finish is nice, they cut well. Nothing but very good accuracy out of every one of them. Never had an issue with the prefits I've sold either. I’ll keep using them unless I start getting poor performance out of them.

Zermat origin is a budget action. Proof barrels are budget barrels. Cheap shitty no name carbon stocks are budget stocks. There is a reason they sell prefits for $500 and they sit on the shelf meanwhile the actualy quality smith's are selling out at 750-850. Just becuase you never had an issue in your small sample size, doesn't mean there aren't, or you would even know. I have 2 with a 50% failure rate and 100% proof prefit failure rate. My sr15 shoots better groups than the proof.

You can piece together an amazing rifle for $4500 or so using the best of everything. Spending more is a complete waste of money.

The origin is a great action, its no wonder they're as popular as they are. Proof prefits are cheap because the scale they can manufacture them at. Theyre massively popular here on the hide, and they sell by the truckloads.

Its unfortunate you got some bad ones. So odd given their overall their success.

Lol it's not isolated. I've had more than a few of the most respected Smiths in the country who say the same thing about proof and some refuse to even use their barrels due to their inability to control bore and land size. This is why I don't use local or random smiths or even some of the ones people here try and pimp. If you aren't indicating the barrel before cutting it with a proof, you are rolling the dice.

What smith doesnt indicate a barrel in before cutting on it? Ive never met one.

If I find a bad one, i’ll be happy to post about it.

I haven't got the memo that proofs are shit barrels now.

I've got a few, both prefit and rifles built off of blanks. My Proof prefit for my AI is probably my most accurate gun.

This guarantee is such a con on the count of if you claim it’s not, they will blame your shooting styles set up ammo anything they can to say it’s not their barrel. Having said that I have two proof barrels they both shoot good I have my Christiansen arms barrels that shoot better and I have a ton of carbon 6 barrels that imho are second to none. But as stated proof is kind of the put it on every shelf for a budget kind of deal. So you get what you pay for.

if no one was willing to pay that much for them then the price would be a lot less , so apparently if they are selling then they must be worth it to someone that isn't me but someone .

Hey, why build/sell two $3k rifles if you can build/sell one $7k rifle?

Bartlein 3 contour, manners eh1, origin. Done. If you need a lighter rifle than that either a) get in shape or 3- your hunting some super rough shit and now best anyway, because your a super stud hunting sheep at 10,000 feet.

This!!

You could do a PVA prefit and save some $ and likely wait times.
Also might go with a Mesa Precision stock, save $ and wait times.

Im an old fat guy and I carry an 8.5 lb rifle all over the mtns.
8-10 miles a day sometimes. Piles of elevation.
With a pack.
And can shoot it sub MOA to 600 off that pack.

Have had good luck with Proof barrels, both prefits and AR.
Several of my friends too.

Proof and Gunwerks are built on the same principle… build run of the mill rifles and charge exorbitant prices. Someone will pay for them.

The thing is they’re not after “normal” shooters like 95% of the guys on this board. They are ARE after guys with more money than they know what to do with who will buy those guns because they can/don’t care/don’t know any better.

A guy I work with has a Proof rifle….carbon barrel, very light stock, etc, etc. Expensive. Shoots alright, at best. Not even bedded….

I also may have missed a memo on proof barrels...

However, I dunno if there is any rifle I would spend $7800 on. I'm not an ELR guy (where I could see starting to blow thru cash) and I think after 5 grand its just pissing money away.

I mean AIs are around 5k (I have one, and am required to remind all you poors that I have one). A full custom Impact/Lone Peak/TL3/Terminus Zeus with Bartlein or Brux barrel, Manners Stock runs around 5k. What are you getting for that extra money above that? I mean seriously:

AXMCs and Barret MRAD are in that territory (Again pushing ELR territory this time with Multi-cal Magnum Rifles).

Or let me pose another question: If I throw a Badrock Southfork to a top shooter will they drop any points? Or a Bighorn Origin BA on a $1000 stock--give it frank and watch him slap my ass on my AI. I won't say there isn't a benefit to the high end rifles (customization to get it Just Right (tm)), but I will state that I get really damn skeptical the higher you go. After 5k I better be getting a mojito after every round and a hacienda boy to carry my rifle.

Poor People AI's are $5K . AXSR and the like are pushing $9K and the 50s are like 12K.

I would take a custom impact/lone peak over ANY cadex, AI or MRAD up to 338LP sized cases.

More reliable, more accurate, cheaper to replace barrels and parts.

I bought a new Proof AI pre-fit (all steel) for $600. I was a little skeptical, but it is no-shit the most accurate rifle I have. Would definitely buy another before I go $850+ on another brand of AI pre-fit.

Customs more reliable than AI / Cadex / mrad.

Lol comedians out tonight
100% You will see more AI's go down at a match than Impacts/Lone Peaks. They are built for a specific purpose but they go down more often because they are more complicated, with more parts, especially small parts prone to failure.

If you actually shot, you would know this.

I think I might hve to use the ignore button for the first time in life.

The idiocy is sickitating

If i got my shit pushed in every thread like you do, i would probally run and hide too.
You mean like claiming AI barrels cost more?

PVA: same price
Bugholes: same price

Ask most smiths: how much to chamber a pre-fit barrel. 737R vs AI vs <insert custom action here>

SAME FUCKING PRICE

You come in, shit all over this thread, start an AI vs Custom action disckslap sidetrack, claim proof barrels are shit, spread misinformation about prefits, never with backup and derail the whole thread.

GTFO and shoot and stop shitting all over the threads outside the bear pit.

@Paton No proof rifles are not worth that cost. You can start with a Barreled Action Bighorn (or ARC)+ Chassis at aroun 2-2.5k and go All the way to an AT-X / Full Custom Action Build at 5k. Only an asshole would consider any of those options "subpar" Even a Tikka is a great starter rifle to build and mod. Tell anyone who says otherwise to fuck off and show you their evidence.

Spend your money on training, ammo and getting in the field.
