Report by NGO Russia Behind Bars

Rumor has it that military recruitment in prisons is not voluntary. We have been monitoring the recruitment situation in penal colonies since the beginning of the war. Volunteers abound. Inmates are lining up to go to war. Their friends and relatives write: “Where do I apply for him to get recruited sooner?”

If we were to dig deeper into their motivation, we could conclude that there is an element of coercion. Russian prisons are notorious for torture, abuse, and humiliation. For many inmates, volunteering to go to war is a way out. Anything is better than the inside.

As for relatives, they are mostly after money. Eight out of nine questions we get deal with compensation. “Will they really get paid? When is the payday? Why haven’t they sent the contract? How much will he get if he is wounded? What if it's a serious injury?”

Promises were vague. Recruits signed a medley of papers, nothing standardized. Some recalled submitting consent to join the “DPR” police force. Some said their forms had Russia's Ministry of Defense header and included a checkbox “I agree to go to war in Ukraine”. Those who enlisted said they were promised early release. Or that there would be an amnesty. However, if they got killed in action, this would be considered as “shot during an escape attempt”.

They told us they’d donned camo, trained twenty hours a day, and ate dry rations on the go. They received training in mine clearance and – I’m not sure about the correct military term – storming? In a nutshell, former inmates got an express stormtrooper course, even though some of them had never done conscription service.

Further on, the relatives of some other missing inmates submitted inquiries to the FSIN and were told that the inmates had been transferred to IK-12 in the Rostov Region at their own request. “Go look for him there.”These penal colonies are being used as boot camps.

The carrots:
– A monthly income of 100,000 rubles (~$1,650) in cash and a 100,000-ruble bonus, to be paid to the recruit directly or to their family.
– 5 million rubles (~$82,300) to their relatives in the event of death. Several such compensations have already been paid out.
– Compensation for wounds received in action (the amount is not specified). Those seriously injured can expect to return home with their conviction annulled. We have not heard of such cases yet.
– In a few colonies, recruiters promised to reward acts of outstanding heroism by arranging the visit of the recruit’s mother or wife – who would arrive by plane, no less. Such fantasies do not require any comment.
– After six months of participation in the special operation (starting from the first combat experience, not the date of recruitment), inmates would walk free, have their criminal records expunged, and get the President’s pardon.

The sticks:
– Execution on the spot for attempted desertion or surrendering to the enemy. This is indirectly confirmed by the accounts of both recruits and Wagner mercenaries: former inmates are followed by an anti-retreat unit consisting of “seasoned fighters”.
– Execution on the spot for consuming drugs or alcohol.
– Execution on the spot for looting. (Interestingly, the long-time residents of occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions, with whom I often talk for work and just chat, have very fond memories of Igor Strelkov-Girkin for this particular habit of shooting looters on the spot without trial. My weak protestations about possible mistakes and the need for investigation and a fair trial were met with a shrug).

By the most careful estimates, private military companies (Wagner is only one example) have recruited around 5,000 inmates.(September 2022) Not all of them are fighting; some are still training, while others are waiting for their turn in penal colonies because there are more volunteers than needed. Some are already dead.

All that considering that PMCs have only processed the penitentiary institutions of the European part of Russia. Inmates have shared that Wagner agents or Prigozhin himself mentioned plans of recruiting 20,000 convicts, or even better, 50,000.

Will they succeed? They certainly will, if they venture further east, beyond the Urals and into Siberia.
A man who looks like Evgeny Prigozhin tells inmates: “I've promised the President I will win this war.”

It appears to be true. Indeed he has. And it had to be to the president(backing it),because no one else in Russia, even the Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev or the FSB director Alexander Bortnikov, not to mention such a small fish as the head of the FSIN, has the power to remove so many inmates from the legal environment.

Can you imagine? A helicopter owned by a private company lands in a restricted facility –a maximum-security or even a “special regime” prison, where there are no random people. Its passengers simply elbow the guards and the warden out in front of the inmates. They occupy the offices, grab personal files, and bring in the polygraph, which is an essential component of interviews, along with questions about the attitude to Ukraine.

Then they simply take some of the inmates away. Put them on a transport with nothing but a change of underwear and two packs of cigarettes. And that’s it. “You’ll be given all you need,” they say.

If I was in jail there I would probably volunteer too. I’m not the right class to get in a country club jail even here. If some $$$ actually goes to the family, it’s a done deal.

Good post. I would add that the U.S. has made a huge mistake by freezing some currency reserves of Russia, which Russia kept in the U.S. and some other foreign instituations. When this happened, no matter who wins this ukie shit in the future, U.S. dollar is now done as an "honest" reserve currency, which is supposed to be neutral no matter what.

But this time, as I feel, it convinced a lot of different people that having the U.S. dollar as a primary means of keeping their wealth may be dangerous for them. Naturally, people want more predictability and better security for their assets.

Now Fighting for Ukraine: Volunteers Seeking Revenge Against Russia​

Chechens, Crimean Tatars and people from the former Soviet republics, all with deep historical grievances against Moscow, are eagerly taking up arms for Kyiv.

KYIV REGION, Ukraine — The sharp crack of sniper fire rang out across the snowbound valley. Soldiers in white camouflage crouched low, shooting at the hill opposite to provide cover as four men evacuated a casualty.
The action was part of a live-fire training exercise for new recruits on a recent morning outside the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. But there was an unusual element to the event. While a Ukrainian Army officer was giving the orders, the trainees were members of a volunteer Chechen battalion that also mixed in some Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians.
Ukraine’s military commanders have long said they do not lack soldiers for the war, but they have nonetheless welcomed to their ranks thousands of volunteers, including foreign citizens. Many of them, like the Chechens, are refugees from Russia itself. Others have come from surrounding nations, like Georgia, that have a history of opposition to Moscow and the leadership of President Vladimir V. Putin.
“We saw what was happening,” said Muslim Madiyev, a gray-bearded deputy commander of the Chechen battalion, wearing ear protectors to muffle the sound of gunfire as he watched the training exercises. “Ukraine has no shortage of men, but we have to join and be a part of this war.”

Many of the volunteers were already living in Ukraine, either for work or seeking refuge from political oppression back home. Some volunteers have struggled with visas and residency permits, while their eagerness to join the fight has aroused suspicions among some Ukrainian officials and commanders, who are on high alert for saboteurs.

But the volunteers seem to be finding their place. Mr. Madiyev, a veteran of two wars in Chechnya against Moscow, was an associate of Dzhokhar Dudayev, the former Soviet general who led Chechnya’s bid for independence from Russia in the 1990s. Exiled from Chechnya, Mr. Madiyev settled in Ukraine in 2016.
His battalion, named for the late Chechen leader, is one of several Chechen units that have joined Ukraine in its fight against Russia in recent years, following the 2014 uprising of Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. Mr. Madiyev declined to reveal how many active fighters he had, saying simply, “We have enough.”

He spoke about the Russian invasion the way many Ukrainians do, saying that if Moscow is not stopped in Ukraine, it will threaten many more countries of Europe.

But the younger fighters in his battalion take things further.
“Our aim is the liberation of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria,” a Chechen fighter said, using the name of the erstwhile self-declared republic, “and to help all the nations who want it, to gain freedom.” In accordance with military protocol, he gave only his code name, Maga.
The Chechens are only one example of numerous ethnic-based battalions and regiments that have been forming in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion last February.
Fighters from Belarus have formed a regiment thousands strong. Other volunteers come from the Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as from ethnic minorities that have large populations in Russia: Chechens, Tatars and Turkic-speaking groups.

Most of them are motivated by historical grievances of dispossession and suppression by Moscow. Chechens and Tatars were among many groups that were decimated by forcible deportations under Stalin in the 1940s.

There is also a smattering of Russian exiles, among them Russian nationalists and neo-Nazis who are opposed to Mr. Putin. A thousands-strong regiment of Belarusians includes many opponents of the country’s president, Aleksandr G. Lukashenko.
Their participation in the war may be useful for Ukraine, but it is also a potentially explosive issue for the Kyiv government because most of them harbor long-term political ambitions to return home and overthrow the Russian and Belarusian governments. Ukrainian military officials declined to comment on their use of the volunteer groups, while a spokesman for the Ukrainian security service, the S.B.U., said it was not responsible for managing them.
But the volunteers themselves say that they are acting with the full knowledge and under the orders of the Ukrainian Army and intelligence services. Many of their operations are covert, including dangerous reconnaissance or sabotage missions behind Russian lines.
In response to an appeal by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, early in the war, thousands of volunteers poured in from Western countries, including the United States and Britain. Most joined the International Legion, which has been recognized by the Ukrainian government and, to some extent, integrated into the Ukrainian Army.
At a news briefing last month, Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said there were ideological and political benefits to having foreign soldiers fighting alongside Ukrainians in defense of European values.

Foreign soldiers were also gaining valuable experience, he added: “The experience of the modern war here, the war of technologies, drone war and electronic warfare. So I think it’s a win-win exchange.”

But the volunteers from former Soviet republics are, in many ways, even more useful.
They have a linguistic advantage because most speak Russian, which is widely spoken in Ukraine, and sometimes Ukrainian, making coordination with the Ukrainian military easier. And some, like a group of Georgians in the Kavkaz Legion, have battlefield experience, having served with the NATO-led force in Afghanistan.
Their knowledge of Russia and Russians, and their hatred of Moscow, has made the volunteers good undercover operators for Kyiv. Some Ukrainian officials and lawmakers have even expressed support for their causes. In October, for example, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a motion recognizing the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as a territory occupied by Russia.
But they also face substantial risks, given the nature of their work behind enemy lines. Not just Russian citizens, but virtually any undercover soldiers captured by Russian forces would be dealt with harshly.
One of the more recently formed volunteer battalions, Turan, is composed of Turkic-speaking ethnic groups from the Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia. It is led by a refugee from Kyrgyzstan, Almaz Kudabek, who had worked as a barber on American bases in his home country and in the Afghan city of Kandahar.

He says he has recruited Azerbaijanis, Tatars and Chinese Uyghurs to the group, and he talks passionately about the marginalization and oppression of Turkic-speaking minorities in Russia. He said that Moscow had unfairly drawn conscripts for the war predominantly from remote and poorer regions of Russia, including those populated by Turkic-speaking ethnic minorities, who have been killed in far greater numbers than ethnic Russians.
But Mr. Kudabek said members of his unit could turn that injustice to their advantage, infiltrating Russian-occupied territory on sabotage missions and even passing themselves off as Russian soldiers.
“We just want to fight Russians,” he said. “We know what they are.”
Despite their evident value to the Ukrainian military, the commanders of ethnic battalions complained of a lack of support from Kyiv. The Chechen battalion leader, Mr. Madiyev, said that beyond weapons and ammunition, the units have to provide for their own food, fuel and equipment.
The leader of a Russian regiment, a far-right nationalist who uses the code name White Rex, said he ran into multiple obstacles when he formed the unit shortly after the Russians invaded.
Although he and his fellow volunteers had lived in Ukraine for several years, they were initially met with suspicion from Ukrainians on edge about Russian saboteurs. “We were held at gunpoint,” he said. “We had many funny, and not so funny, encounters, but I was determined to have this regiment.”
But they have also found support among Ukrainians.
A Ukrainian volunteer group, Bratstvo, eventually helped the Russian regiment find a role for itself not so dissimilar from the other ethnic battalions, operating behind Russian lines and carrying out reconnaissance and sabotage missions for the Ukrainian Army.
Minutes before setting out on a night mission recently, White Rex said his aim had always been to find a way to return home to Russia. But he said the war had taught him that the way to return to Russia was to overthrow Mr. Putin and his government.

“The Russian Volunteer Corps marches in and destroys the current government — that’s the only way,” he said. “You cannot persuade a tyrant to leave, and any other force would be seen as invaders.”

I think it more of the case that it’s Russia taking advantage of the situation and using what religious groups find morally outrageous and giving them two things: an entity to blame and a common bond in the outrage of moral decline. He is trying to rally the major religions on his and his allys’ countries into believing that their faith will be lost forever if he loses.

Certain groups will have the perspective that if this is “pro-Ukraine group” is allowed to stand then the prospects of knowing God and going to heaven are going to be eradicated and their children will be forced to be gay. That will motivate them to at least support Putin. It needs to be recognized that he is not talking only to Russia but the entire BRIC lineup - all the countries ready to break away from the US dollar and US influence. That’s a lot of humans.

Yes, it is a lot of humans. Many, like us, are frustrated with the the leftist crap and like most humans, look for simple easy solutions to get behind. He is running an old school psyop which is simpler and arguably more effective when the fancy narrative curation we use over here has lost its saltiness.

Interesting, laser irradiation warning gizmo , covers cca 240° in xy 120° in z ,essentially its capable of of indentifying laser type (range finder vs target designator) and give ither a vibrating or audible warning to general direction , left , right ,or center , so if one or both sensors are irradiated ,It was retailed through Finland in Eu ,but its a Russian design ,might be built in China , i was trying to buy some for a Mil customer last year so got in contact with the Fin PO box , but no dice .

At the time we were looking to use it as a tripod mounted dodad for sniper teams.

crock of shit whitehouse comments on IRAN. After that facility was hit with our rockets being used, Russia should have escalated and let it be known that aiding Ukraine in that matter could result in war.

Yeah, nothing better than clearing minefields with your feet and if you're lucky, you end up a paraplegic or stopping bullets until the enemy runs out of ammo and you may be lucky to survive and clear the enemy line. That fate is surely better than being alive in a prison.

Anyone can contribute his or her own money to the prize fund. Prizes are awarded to winners who have destroyed enemy equipment declared in the competition list and recorded the result.
This is a new trend in the Russian information environment that emerged largely due to striking effectiveness of Wagner PMC fighters and other well-coordinated professional groups of the Russian military. The courage and fearlessness of these warriors amid modest successes of regular Russian MoD units brings fame at the level of top celebrities. Opponents from NATO countries cannot boast of the same.
US IFV M2 Bradley and MBT Leopard have become particularly popular in the hunt.
The RSOTM (River Side Of The Medal) Telegram channel, for example, stated that the winners would receive branded T-shirts, as well as $14,000 for M2 Bradley and $28,000 for Leopard in addition. However, RSOTM has declared that it would not be announcing rewards for the elimination of enemy soldiers or undesirable persons, not under any circumstances. This is in stark contrast to Ukrainian statements about rewards for the heads of journalists, politicians or individual Russian commanders.

RSOTM is one of the modern-day phenomena. A few years ago, the Telegram channel was created by a group of PMCs and professional military personnel under the leadership of a persona known as “Admin”. Another fighter known as “Vladlen Tatarsky”, who became extremely popular in 2022, is actively involved in the case. A video with him you may have seen on our web site. This team has now actually turned into a separate warrior guild.
The Russian MoD also pays bonuses to soldiers and officers for destroying enemy equipment or accomplishing important military tasks.
For destroyed aircraft – $4,300
For a destroyed helicopter – $2,900
For destroyed UAV – $720
For destroyed tank – $1,440
For destroyed APC, IFV, MRAP, MTLB, SAU, SAM, MLRS – $720
For achievements in destroying manpower – $1,440

Interestingly, Russia’s Defense Ministry bonuses are low even in comparison to the monthly salary of an ordinary contract or mobilized soldier serving in the conflict zone. According to the official statements of the Defense Ministry, the minimum salary of such an enlisted man is approximately USD 2,800, while the one of sergeants and officers is some higher. It turns out that if we are talking only about material motivation, it is preferable for a Defense Ministry serviceman just to stay in the conflict zone rather than to conduct active combat operations, risking his life even more.
The situation is different in the Wagner PMC, where the minimum salary is about $3500. At the same time, bonuses for the destroyed enemy’s equipment are many times higher than in the Russian Defense Ministry.
It is clear that the initiatives launched by RSOTM and other similar organizations are aimed at effectively increasing the material aspect of the motivation of all Russian soldiers in the conflict zone. Whether this will bring any visible results will be seen in the near future.

BREAKING. Russians Captured AFU Stronghold Soledar
On 10 January 2022, in the late afternoon, official media sources of the Russian Wagner PMC stated that the cirty of Soledar had been captured by Russian units.
Soledar was one of the key points of defence of the AFU in the East of Ukraine. The city is home to Europe’s largest salt production facility.
Evgeny Prigoggin, head of the Wagner PMC, announced:
“Wagner PMC units have taken control of the entire territory of Soledar. A cauldron has been formed in the centre of the city, where urban fighting is taking place. The number of prisoners will be announced tomorrow.
I should like to stress once again that no units other than those of the Wagner Cheka were involved in the storming of Soledar.”
Prigozhin himself was also in the ranks of his warriors in Soledar.

Prigozhin and his soldiers stand at the Salt Mine Museum, which is already closer to the western outskirts of Soledar, confirming full control of the town.
It is currently known that the city, for the most part including the centre, was occupied by Wagner PMC assault groups. The PMC units took all the dominant heights around the city, including Yurchina Mountain, taking direct fire control of the AFU supply roads and outposts. Several hundred more Ukrainian soldiers reportedly remain in the city.
A mopping-up of the city is underway.
The active phase of fighting for Soledar lasted more than four months, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defences were resistant to regular army units and they were subsequently withdrawn from the front line. It took the Wagner Group just over two weeks to take the city directly.
