Rifle Scopes Why are elevation/windage reversed?

Curious if there's an an answer or not - why is windage on the right and up/down while elevation is on top and left/right?

Doesn't it make more sense to have the actions mirror the axis they alter?

Because the turrets operate lead screws that push on the erector tube, and those screws turns rotation into linear movement.
