I'm not expert on chopping down trees or explosives but the videos are very interesting.

Long video...

Bonus educational video:

Not that I wouldn’t want to, but somehow drilling 4 holes in an 8” tree, packing with explosives, then bucking up logs with a chainsaw and moving them with excavators doesn’t seem like a super efficient way of clearing a landing zone. Again, fun , but the practically vs just tipping them over with the excavator…

Oh yes it would! You just have to wrap it enough times. Primacord was used in VN and Borneo to clear huge trees to make LZ’s.

A now passed EOD bud said he was called out to drop a tree outside a firebase. Took a look, fair sized, wrapped what he thought was sufficient detcord, added a cap and time fuze and pulled the M60. Surprised it didn't fall, he walked over to inspect. Said it did little damage and he was later told it was an ironwood tree.

DISCLAIMER: I was not there and he told many stories that began, "This ain't no shit..."

Just a PSA for all you folks, especially in Northern New England.

Keep your cars locked and your windows rolled up. Otherwise people will break into your car and leave zucchini.

Wife left the driver door open when she went to fill up her Durango with gas at the local station.

Small town, pop 150

When she went to get back in, had a yellow lab as a passenger😄

Had to buy a stick of jerky to get him out😂

Go back several years, when the Daytona Prototypes came on scene. They replaced the le mans prototypes that had been the thing for decades. Why the change?

This is when it died to me, and I have not followed it from that day to now.

The DP's are (IMHO) following the NASCAR spec- series racing that nascar has become. If you like that all and good. If you like the innovation then not so good. This is why you don't see the same cars at le mans running in any of these races anymore.

To me it looked like they took nascar, le mans, Can-am, tossed it all in a bag to mix it all up and out fell a Daytona prototype. The first years are not kind to the DP's not even taking the over all win at Daytona their first year, so nascar does what nascar does and cripple the under classes to make their preferred classes faster. Then the TV coverage basically switched to only the DP class and not the "production based" cars. I was done. It is nascar on a road course.

Back in the day it was all busted out into different bodies, now not so much.

Back when I was racing, I ran in the SCCA, NASA was just then really getting going and IMSA was for the guys with deep pockets. SCCA was on the slide down and NASA was on the way up. Lots of club drivers, IMHO what is keeping, or at the time kept SCCA afloat (not the cone crashers) started to really jump ship for NASA. They took our Lic, passed our cars, it was no big deal at all to run both bodies at the time.

This is also the height of the power of NASCAR, and they started to grab other bodies, and form it into what Bill, and later coke head Brian France wanted it to be. Only issue was no one know what the hell Brian france was thinking. And that was the start of the slide for them.

I babbled.

Had an invite to Sebring, but I did not want to haul my car down there, looking back should have done it.

100 grain a foot maybe on a small tree. Regular commercial det cord nope. Even using that size it would be extremely inefficient because of how many times you would have to wrap it.

I used commercial det cord to girdle juniper trees along a creek for a fisheries project. We tipped over some of them with some shearing charges. Using cast boosters. Also ANFO in the corner of plastic bags. Tried some left over Austin RockCrushers and they blew a perfect hole right through the center of the trees.

Fuck the Forest Circus.
Won’t disagree. Just remember the ass chewing and near infamy I received on my first day sawing landing under a high lead, also with a Cat crew skidding logs to my landing (got thrown to the wolves right off the bat). I cut a tamarack at a couple preferred lengths and had a 5’ end left over. You would’ve thought I killed someone! They (kinda) shut the job down, ran me through the wringer up, down and sideways about wasting wood and all that. Everyone on the job had to repeat the ordeal to me and that weekend at the bar, a guy asked me if I was “that guy”. Stuff sticks with ya for a while.

We removed trees to clear fields of fire for a COP once. They were palm trees, but we wrapped em tight and let ‘em rip

P for plenty
Yeah Oaktrees would probably be different. I recall Det cord taking care of a lotta problems in the field… but as I said, there is usually also C4 in copious quantities.
