If you're talking about the wood under the barrel forward of the sling attachment it looks more to me like there is a cut out in the metal and the wood is inside.
It’s an odd duck for sure. Appears to have an exposed hammer, tube magazine, and action floor plate. The scope doesn’t appear to have turrets, and one of the scope rings doesn’t look like it’s attached to the action.
