The fun question of the week in my household was, any Ferrari you want, free, you don't pay for maintenance or insurance but you also can't sell it, so no loss or profit from the deal.
I started by thinking 250 GTO, because its possibly the most beautiful car of all time. But its so valuable and rare I don't think I could enjoy driving it or really beat on it.
Then I thought maybe 308 GT4 Dino. Fairly inconspicuous, haul more people, not a Ferrari douchebag type of car. But not special enough for a once in a lifetime free Ferrari.
I discarded F40 pretty quickly. One of my favorite cars because its so cool, but it's a nasty barely tamed race car with blobs of glue all over the interior and a high likelihood of killing me.
I briefly thought about F355 or 360. Common enough to be fairly disposable, I could beat on it without guilt, amazing sound. But no, not that special.
So now I'm stuck between 288 GTO and F50. I love the 80's vibe, pop up headlights and small V8 of the 288, but not a fan of turbos. The F50 was one of the halo cars of my childhood. Great V12 sound, decent styling, analog, manual brakes and steering and all that good stuff, cool tech like the engine being a stressed member. One of my favorite car reviewers speaks very highly of it.
An entire week of mental turmoil about cars I'll never have. My son is wishing he never asked the question now.

The 250 GTO seems the closest to resembling the Jaguar "E" type in form (if not performance):
My father had one of these with the very first "V12" engine that came out. But he traded it in for an XJ-12 Sedan (an XJ6 with that same V12 engine). I recall the E-Type used to have battery powered "electric fans." You had best hope they were working or you'd be SOL. I recall them coming on once you turned on the ignition but before starting the motor.
If I ever were to own a Ferrari (and I probably won't), I would attempt to have them "custom build" me a "Testarosa."
Eh, that one was only briefly considered. The looks are a bit polarizing for me, but lately I really like them. The problem is that they aren't interesting from a technical standpoint in any way. It's basically a car shaped truck with 12 cylinders, and known for driving like a truck too.

I think I would do 512TR way before Testarossa though. But all in all it didn't make the cut in my hypothetical world because its a mid engined GT car, not actually a sports car.
F50 hands down. Once you drive one..there is nothing like it.
People think “sports cars” have to be the fastest. Exactly the opposite, race cars need to be the fastest. Sports cars need to make you feel something.
Ferrari knew this making the f50, the rest of the car industry is now just understanding what it means.

Great catch too! And in light of your post, it’s wonderfully ironic how I somehow typed Mucielago instead of Miura. I was talking about this with my son earlier in the day as well, and he said “Murcielago” as his favorite…my mind must have gone to that conversation as I was typing. I clearly can’t multitask as well anymore! LoL
I truly believe the Miura is one of the most beautiful cars ever built…far prettier than any Ferrari to my eyes. The only thing keeping it out of the #1 position for me is that I don’t think I could bear to drive it in anger; I’d just park it and stare at it.

Exactly. That's why things like the Honda S600, Lancia Stratos, tons of slow Alfa Romeos and such make up my giant bucket list of cars.
I spent silly money putting ITB's on my car for the sound and character. A buddy asked how much horsepower I gained, it blew his mind when I said "don't know, don't care".
Also why all new hypercars with the exception of the T50/33 bore me to death. I don't care how fast the new F80 is, it's a soulless sounding V6 that stirs zero emotions.
The S600 story is bonkers too.

That's because they were built before everything became big fat and heavy. Most everything from that time is tiny compared to modern vehicles.
Yup, they weren't exactly worried about making space for airbags and ABS modules..
Small cars are best cars. Drove this one a few months back.
I have a customer that has a LAmbo Aventador, hybrid,
he said it goes about 6 miles on the battery before the motor kicks in, which is far enough to get him out of his neighborhood so the neighbors don't bitch about the noise,,
512, and resto-mod have entered the chat! The 512 Berlinetta Boxer hovers in the top 5 for me… I don’t like it as much as the wedge of the 288 or the curves of the Miura, but it’s a nice middle ground.

There have been a few tuners and builders who have updated older super cars over the years, but man, I’d love to see what a modern Miura would look like with a modern suspension and a well tuned naturally aspirated V12 controlled by modern engine management systems.
