Keep in mind that a lot of those "Independent businesses" also farm out to HD and Lowes. If their business is slow, they have to keep their guys/crews working.
We're in the middle of a remodel presently. We've had a contractor and a plumber come in to give us quotes on various things. We basically kicked both of them out after they gave us ridiculous quotes. The Trades have been quite busy lately and the contractors are creatures of opportunity/low hanging fruit. If you're looking to have reasonable work done for reasonable prices, you go to the back of the bus.
Don't be surprised if your guy just doesn't show up.
There are good contractors out there, they most likely are the ones you guys think are overpriced but like anything you get what you pay for. If you paid for better contractors you wouldn't have the issues that you are experiencing.
NOPE!
I don't really know your particular situation, my comments were more of a general statement and not at anyone in particular, but to put it in perspective it is like putting a Barska scope on your rifle and expecting Zero Compromise performanceI sort of hope he doesn't. I can pay someone else a premium to finish his work and come out money ahead.
We got estimates from five businesses. The guy we chose was within a hundred bucks of the highest estimatevand about 500 more than the next closest. He had the slab the wife liked best. As I mention, when they did the kitchen, it went great.
You can pay more for a Range Rover, but not get the quality of a Lexus.

I had this same problem. They always answer when my girl sends any kind of request though. My point is hiring people is a crap shoot no matter the cost. My mechanic is top notch. Always busy. He charges less for an oil change than the quick lube places…even with a military discount. Tire rotation is part of his service.
Someone mentioned small jobs. No kidding. Called four “handymen” about installing a patio door. Can’t get the time of day.
I use a plumbing outfit, all union plumbers (100 employed) I always ask for a particular guy with 37 years experience, who is a master at diagnosis, and fixes everything right first time out. Truck full of supplies too.My dad had a plumbing contractor in Kalispell MT come out and replace a toilet, vanity, sink, 1 angle stop, the shower valve and two faucets. The guy was on site less than 6 hours total. When dad got the invoice it was for, the toilet, 20 hours of labor, 3 round trips of drive time to and from the contractors parts warehouse, 8 angle stops, and 20 feet of copper pipe. I supplied the vanity, sink and faucets. He was supposed to bring the toilet, the second round trip they charged was for him to go back into town and get the toilet. The third round trip was to come back the next day because he didn't crimp two of the connection on the shower valve. The guy used maybe 1 foot of copper pipe, only changed 1 angle stop and got all of the work done in one day, except having to come back and crimp two lines the next day. When I called the owner of the plumbing company he got really indignant with me. I asked how he could charge for 20 hours when the guy was on site less than 6 hours. I also asked how he could charge for 8 angle stops when he only replaced 1, why he charged for 20 feet of pipe, and why is he charging to come back the next day when it was his fault for not crimping two lines.
My dad has been lettering this plumbing company's trucks and doing all of their signs for many years and the response I got from the owner of the company was "I don't have time to deal with this kind of shit". Is it any wonder they are the most expensive and have the lowest Yelp rating of any plumbing contractor in the Flathead Valley.
How did you find that particular guy?I use a plumbing outfit, all union plumbers (100 employed) I always ask for a particular guy with 37 years experience, who is a master at diagnosis, and fixes everything right first time out. Truck full of supplies too.
I pay top dollar, but quality i the long run is cheap.
Iirc, that guy was on his cell phone and hit a semi head on. They pulled him out in two pieces - top and bottom torso. I saw the photos in a continuing Ed class for paramedic. It was next level gory.
He came once and he throughly plained everything. He told me what was wrong and told me 3 ways to fix the problem and why he chose a given option..U could call it informed consent. Asked for him every time the last 5 years. How did you find that particular guy?
Probably the cleaning closet at OSHA HQ.
Going back a few decades, we had a split level house that we wanted to finish off the one side attic into a bedroom. This was going to raise the roof on that one side of the house enough to make a large room. Having just done the kitchen and bath with friends, family, and myself, I wanted no part of a job that big, so we started asking contractors to give us quotes. Some were referred by friends and family, and some were just from seeing signs in front of what looked like nice work. I had a few questions that ended up being good for identifying the ones we didn't want. How big is your crew? Who takes care of all the permits? How long for everything to be done? You'll learn a lot when they answer those.I use a plumbing outfit, all union plumbers (100 employed) I always ask for a particular guy with 37 years experience, who is a master at diagnosis, and fixes everything right first time out. I think the gym has done all it’s going to do with in reason. I’m not dealing with kale chips for dinner or her not having a drink if we go out.Tell her to hit the gym. No body shop without effort to keep the investment up. That comes first. But consideration has to be given to age and kids. Some things can’t be undone.
I can’t find the pic now but a long time ago (80s 90s maybe) there was a guy racing yachts in Cali with a topless all female crew. I’ve seen a picture of them on the rail. Yachts get close, really close when racing. I read a comment once that it was very distracting for other crews.
