First Remington 700 build..

I might be answering my own question but here we go..

I mostly shoot rimfire for the fun of it and NRL/PRS match when I can. I’ve Been wanting to build a centerfire rifle for awhile now and ran across a barely used Remington 700 .308 25?inch barrel in a Boyd stock and a Nikon hunting scope for 500$ “RR” in the serial from what I’ve gathered it’s a pre 2020 700..

I have a range that goes to 1100yards and would like to eventually to shoot there.
That being said am I wasting time having the action blueprinted and rebarreled along with chassis etc? Or just buy a custom action and build a 6GT and keep the .308 put a middle of road scope and triggertech for playin around with?

I personally wouldn't take the .308 Winchester out to 1100 yards/meters. The 6.5 Creedmoor is an excellent cartrige for that. I'm not saying that the .308 Win won't do it. It's just that you'll need to add a higher MOA base to the scope other than the normal rings and mounts.
I took my Remington 700, SPS, .308 Win, Nikon Prostaff 5, 1" tube, 4-18x50 (might be 4-16x 50), out to 800 meters but that's where I left it. It's a pre 2020 as well. My brother has a Ruger Precision in the 6.5 Creedmore with a Vortex Venom, 34 mm tube, 5-25x56 and he and I took it to 1175. The distance was measured using a Sig Sauer Kilo 2500. He's gone further with it since, but for the money that he has in it compared to what I have in mine, I feel stupid. For the first time reaching out to 1100, the 6.5 Creedmoor will have less money involved.

Yes. I went down that road before and you will sink more money into the Rem 700 than what you will spend on a good custom action (e.g. Zermatt Origin, ARC CDG, Aero Solus, etc.). I will never again buy a Rem 700 intending on blueprinting it and adding all the other features that come standard on one of the aforementioned actions.

You will be further ahead going the custom action route. Don’t waste your money on the Remington.

For a shooter that Rem 700 would likely be fine in the stock configuration. Then you can have something to blast with as you build a fancier caliber on a custom action.

Blueprinting is a waste for a stock Rem 700 action. Another option is a Remage barrel with a nut if you are deadset on using a Rem 700 action. Cheaper than a full custom barrel and install at home.

Having both a trued 700 and a few "custom" actions:

You will never be ahead if you buy a 700 to get blueprinted. The only time truing a 700 makes sense is if you already have it. My worked-over 700 locks up like a vault and is a thing to behold...but it is no better than my Origin, and lacks a lot of the features...for what would essentially be the same price.

Then you will want to rebarrel, so the barrel on that rifle becomes a tomato stake immediately.

That Boyd's stock and Nikon scope are two items you'd grow out of pretty quickly too.

A lot of us have been down your road before, and figured out that eating Ramen for a few more months and getting what you truly want the first time around is the best and even cheapest approach in the long run.

500 for essentially an action with your plans vs an aero solus for 700

I don’t like aero personally but that’s not even a decision, get the aero.

That rifle is okay for what it is, but it's going to take a lot of work and money to convert it into something you want it to do.

As others suggest, you would be money ahead going a different route.

If you can afford it, I would build something off of an origin action.

Buy a Defiance, Mack Bros, action & Bartlein barrel, good start. IMO 1100yrds is a bit on the "outer" limits for a .308 cartridge, maybe take a look @ anything in the 6.5 CM or PRC? or .260? etc.

Dissenting opinion here, with a caveat.
I have several custom 700's and a custom built on an origin action.
If you don't have the money on hand to drop on a custom action, barrel, chassis and trigger (realistically 3000+ dollars), there is nothing wrong with starting with the remington. You can have the action trued and either a rem-age barrel, or barrel installed by a gunsmith. Run it in the stock, upgrade to a chassis later. Upgrade the trigger. Add a side bolt release if you want (stock bolt release works just fine).
That being said, yes, you will ultimately spend more that way. It seems to me that Tac-ops has built one or two rifles off of remington actions. @MikeRTacOps

I would run a factory barreled action and see how it does. Probably not as good as custom but way better than many think, and all the stuff will probably fit a custom later.

Well, if you already have the action then...might as well true it and the bolt up, get the optics base screw holes opened to 8-40 (and aligned properly...Remington sucks there), add a Gre-Tan firing pin assembly, get a new (or reground) recoil lug. Those are the basic things you'll want to upgrade. That'll set you back in the $500 - 600 range.

You can go further with bolt releases, extractor upgrades etc... But those above are a good starting point if you don't want to go all out.

I have no issue keeping it as a .308 throwin it in a bravo stock, triggertech special and middle of road scope and throwing it in the safe and focus more on a custom build also. I just don’t wanna waste my time and money having all this stuff done a factory 700 action if the end result isn’t worth it

As someone who went the Rem 700 route before I knew any better, don't.
Sell the action and buy a custom, you will spend more than it's worth on the action and then feel married to it.

Makes sense. I’d probably keep the whole gun since I sold scope I’ve got 360$ in it might as well keep it for that price

Since I have my 700 SPS, I'm changing my scope to a Vortex Venom, FFP, 5-25 x 56 with a 34 mm tube.

I’ve got blueprinted model 7s, just a matter of what you want.

The easy button is a modern made action with a nice prefit you can assemble at home with minimal tools.

At this point, if I was the OP, I’d make the 700 a budget shooter/hunting rifle, and then get a Solus or Origin and spin whatever barrel you want on it for a bench/competition rifle.

Just my 2 cents.

The better question is where are you finding a Solus, period.
I have nothing against Aero, and I have actually wanted to pick up a Solus, but it appears they are a sinking ship.
Unless there have been very recent changes, they have not been delivering products for months now.
Mack Bros EVO II is your answer.
For around 750, the Weatherby 307 builders action wouldn't be a bad start. I would square the face of the receiver though.

The better question is where are you finding a Solus, period.

Be at your ffl within a week, ordered mine from there last year when they had a sale for less than that
