What's the most Tactical Timmy caliber for a 16.5" barreled short action? I've got a KRG Bravo with the enclosed forend sitting here, so I might as well build a rifle for it.

277 Fury, 338 Federal, 6.8 Western, 22LR?

Use case: shooting steel out to 600 yards.

600 yards? A 223.

I have 16.5” in 223, 308, and 6.5 creed.

All are loads of fun.

For 600 and in I guess it would depend on if you shoot more consistent wind or wind that changes every .3 seconds for days on end.
We are more the latter, so 6 BR and up gets used more at distance.

.223 can be hard in the super switchy winds. And an absolute hoot in a pretty consistent wind.
One day with an 8 mph wind at 4 oclock, I put an entire mag in 8” at 600.
This last Sat afternoon even the 6.5 140s at 2850 were getting blown around at 600 by 12-25 variable wind.

140 doing 2850 out of a 16.5.... damn homey!

I've got a Gladius in 6.5CM and I gotta work to get 130gr up in the high 2700's

Sorry.

Different rifle! 24” barrel.

Same load is same speed (and accurate) in my 26” 6.5 creed with a slightly lower round count.
Just a fast barrel I guess.
Bartleinp I’m

123 Scenars do 2840 with a below Hodgdon book max load of h4350 in the 16,5” though….

That makes more sense...I was like: "powdahound" is right...dude must be stuffin' it in to get that number out of a 16.5" pipe.

2725-2750 with 130 Bergers puts me in a very nice place with my shorty. The wind never stops here and this rig is easier to push than my old 24" 308 slinging 185 Juggernauts at max pressure at 2700.
