7 SWC for PRS

Seen a few videos on YouTube discussing a new cartridge made by Derek Webster, but haven’t seen any discussions about it here. Curious if anyone has ventured into this cartridge, or is thinking of doing so? What’s recoil like from any first hand experience?

The pro that the videos talk about for using this bigger cartridge is creating smaller wind brackets as wind increases. As well as making clear swings on plate from force. Let me know what you guys think.

Oh the dasher donkey, I’ve heard some pretty awesome stuff about it, I haven’t gotten behind one yet but it’s definitely on my radar.

I know the cartridges from the original owner of Sherman definitely worked and have a cult following with people.

Derek built my rifle and I was just asking him about replacing the barrel sometime in the near future. He mentioned I should look at the 7 SWC but I know little to nothing about it. I plan on doing a little research and talking to him more about it.

Better wind than the popular 6mms after you get to 600+, at more than twice the recoil energy (and more than a .308/178).

I don't think it will be for everyone, but those who shoot in consistent high wind conditions might like it more for sure.

Well that rules it out for me at least, my 169smk load at 2750 is stout enough to mess me up when doing barricade work. Plus being on the east coast we don’t really get high winds besides the occasional gusty day but even that’s not bad.

Looks like another 7SAW. I'll be using mine for NRL hunter, but I personally wouldn't use it for PRS due to increased recoil

Many years ago on this site, a few guys were touting the 7-08AI. This was of course, before the popularity of many of the heavy-for-caliber bullets that we have today. However, aside for now throating for 190s, I don't see where there would be a whole lot of difference between these two as far as design is concerned.

It sounds like an extension of the heavy high BC bullet in an undersized case trend that's going around right now.

I just had a 25GT chambered and have shot about 100rds through it at this point. I'm a long time Dasher and BR shooter. I've seen people post on here how the recoil increase of the 25 cal 135 is negligible over the 6mm 105, citing a minimal 3 grain increase in powder charge. I can tell you that is not my experience. That 135gr at 2665 recoils significantly more than 105 at 2900. It gets .1mrad better wind at 1000 than a Dasher.

Yesterday I was shooting 1" dots on paper at 300yds as an extended zero confirm. We normally have heavy mirage and 80* temps in the afternoon but a storm was rolling in over the mountains so it was perfect shooting conditions. Overcast, no wind, still. I could see trace into the target in the prone. I also shot 5rds off a makeshift barricade to ensure I was maintaining my zero in multiple positions. However the makeshift barricade was a massive, immovable concrete shooting bench so shooting kneeling off a bag is as optimum barricade as you can get. I could also watch my trace going into the bottom right edge of the dot kneeling as well but I was putting a lot of body into the gun. Sounds like the claims are correct, right? I think the issue is going to be when you're shooting 2 min or 90sec 12rd stages with two targets and 6 pos changes on shitty barricades. You won't have time or the infrastructure to drive the gun that optimumly on those types of stages. This is where the Dasher normally shines. I guess I'll find out tomorrow at the club match. Max distance is 800 yds so no noticable wind advantage to the heavier 135gr.

I would imagine a 190gr bullet is going to be the above, on steroids. And knowing Sherman cartridges, subtract 50 - 100fps from initial velocity claims for realistic speeds.

With hybrid cases you can do the same thing with the standard 308 Win.
I ran the 230 Atips over 2600 fps in 22" barrel. Which means in a 28" barrel the speeds will be about the same.
Or just neck up 277 Fury hybrid to.284 and get the same thing with even more potential.
A 308 Win 212 eldx in a 22" light carry rifle at almost 2700 fps, with hybrid cases...that fit the detachable mag.

SWC is a bit shorter and squatter which allows for the 190 class to be more easily mag fed in short action binder plate-less mags, which is where the ballistic coefficient has to be to pull ahead in prs target distances, the lighter 160gr stuff looses that bc advantage over the 6.5 heavies but dont make up enough speed either.

Watched one of the top PRS pros run a 7mm SWC recently at a SE PRS event (he can win with anything). He was in my squad so I got to watch 10 stages. He did win the one day with the 7 SWC. He was obviously eating a lot more recoil than a Dasher etc. Those 190s hammered targets so no doubt on impacts - but, the 190s hit targets so hard tough to see "where" on target to truly "see" impacts. Not like Dasher where one can say "I was 1/10 left of center so will correct". Also, on TYL type targets - we had a "engage big to small" then engage "small to big" - problem is the small targets were swing so much that he had to wait an extended time to engage.

I do not think you will see much 7SWC east of Mississippi again. I suspect he will save the 7 SWC for a very windy event west of Mississippi.

I wonder how much powder folks are able to cram in that case with a 190? My 7 saw doesn’t seem to be able to mag feed much beyond 43.5gr of anything really but particularly h4350 which I would imagine would be in the speed required for the 190.

I'm not buying it. There's a point where it isn't that hard to see impacts on target at distance, in general, but it's more difficult to see impacts from shitty positions with more recoil.

In my squad three people were shooting 135's, someone was shooting 153's, and someone was shooting 105's out of a 6 ARC. 6 ARC won the match.

That’s not terrible but then again that’s off one experience, I know I’d personally prefer not to shoot my 308 for a two day since it’s well not the most enjoyable experience but definitely shows any flaws in the fundamentals.

Looks like the 6ARC is putting in work and is slowly becoming the poor man’s dasher, which is probably hurting some feelings.

I see no reason why the recoil would be less than a 175gr 308. Recoil comes from moving weight.

Jeff is a solid dude to shoot with. Pretty sure he shot the 7SWC at that 1 day match just to test it as the dude is constantly trying new things; at least more than most.
He also won that match.

I did shoot with someone in Raton a few weeks ago who was shooting one, but he didn’t do any better than us shooting 6 dashers or 25 cals.
