By todays standards it could almost be called ugly, but there's something so cool about the designs of sniper rifles from that era. I love the TRG, wish it came in left hand and it would be my dream rifle. The new TRG's are even sexier.
Stock wise it is very different from todays rifles. Modern rifles look slick with everything machined from billet aluminium and they absolutely have their place in modern shooting but like you said, there´s something in these older style rifles. I had a full aluminum chassis in this one but it was not my jam. I did not like the sharp edges and it was cold as hell in the winter. So I went back to the og setup.

Gotta disagree with ya chief. The newer all-metal AIs aren’t friendly to carry, especially in cold weather. I sold my AX and bought an AT right before they were discontinued.

Added thumbhole skins and the thing is a dream, comparatively. Smooth exterior vs grabby and good feeling in all sorts of weather.

I will say the AX looks cool; a different sort of cool than the AT, but cool nonetheless. But for me, the overall ergos and comfort in the field didn’t add up.

But not knocking your aesthetic. Everyone should feel free to voice their opinion, that’s why forums are fun!

For TRGs, I bet the new ones would bug me like the AX did. I prefer the look of the TRG vintage regular stock vs the vintage skeleton butt version. However, I have exactly one 3min holding experience with a full green stock TRG-22 that was for sale at Cabelas, years ago, before I really had much to compare it to.

I have vague hazy memories of it…unsure how I felt. Maybe the skeleton butt improves the ergos(?) but I don’t remember disliking the ergos as they were.

Hell yeah... collapsible stock and everything. This thread needs more green TRG's.

And same here... MY TRG 42 is in a chassis. But its just not the same, I am taking it out and putting it back in the OG setup (unfortunately its black, not Sako Green).

On second look, maybe its the skeleton stock that makes it look odd. The normal buttstock on the TRG stock is definitely the best look for that design. Sako's skeleton buttstock isn't my favorite design and looks lacking on the newer TRG compared to other skeleton buttstocks from cadex and AI. I've never held a TRG though so I have no idea on ergos or user interfaces that might make it an incredible design aside from looks.

Anything past the buttstock though I think is probably my favorite look for any chassis. I have also learned I am a chassis guy over a stock guy, but I've never had to carry anything long distance other than a hunting rifle. I've never had any of my chassis rifles in anything other than competition or range use.

Doesn't look as classic, that's true, but its collapsible, tough to find, and very sought after.

If I could ever get my hands on one, you'd never hear me say anything that sounds like the collapsible skeleton stock makes it any less cool than that rifle is! The AW is probably my favorite rifle from the 80s/90s (like everyone else), but the TRG 21/41 is a close second. And while it may not look as refined, I'm sure Sako's main goal was practicality and usability over aesthetics. And I have zero doubt they hit the mark on their purpose.
