Looking for a truck gun

So i am hoping to get some education here. I've spent a lot of time behind rifles both professionally and recreationally but i dont know a lot about AR type platforms in the way of brands and all the companies that make parts for them. I am looking to get a MK18 style rifle with a folding buttstock or "arm brace." I went to several stores today to price things out and I realize that you get what you pay for but there are so many brands out there i am unfamiliar with. I think i'd like to start with something middle of the road and upgrade later.
This rifle will be for the purpose of self defense so i'd pick reliability over a lower price tag but I also dont need a match rifle either- minute of man will do. A couple a manufacturers that caught my eye were Aero Precison and the Sig M400. Am i on the right track here? Is there a better rifle out there that I should be looking at or is it worth the step up to buy something like a Daniel Defense?

Go to local gun store and ask them about their return policy. Find a place that will let you return if it doesnt work. There can be faults with all brands. What ive noticed is a lot of good big brands get the name, they get the reputation, they grow, so they hire more people, especially during and after covid no one wants to work, so they hire zombies. Now you got good brand companies that churn out garbage once in awhile. What i'd look for is a company/brand that test fires them before shipping them, good customer service, and QC. A youtube or reddit search will tell you a lot. Finding good anything nowadays is a nightmare.

Aero barrels are ballistic advantage. I don’t have any problems using their receivers, but the barrels are hit or miss at best. For a budget friendly, turn key solution, I’d look at DD or BCM.
DD or BCM are good recommendations. Colt would not be a bad choice as well. Aim Surplus usually carries LE trade-in Colts for $800-$1,000.

Aero are garbage guns and that company is going bankrupt. Sig is trash too.

Giessele, BCM, DD, LMT, Seekins, JP.

If it was me. I would do a Giessele Super duty pistol with a brace. 11.5". You won't find a better rifle (pistol) for the money:

Also, most states its illegal to have a loaded rifle even if you have a ccw in your vechicle. But an AR "pistol" is good to go.

A “truck gun” is a broad term.

Here in Wyoming it likely means a weapon that can comfortably reach out a 200-300 yrds for coyotes and work for inside 50-25 yard self defense.

In northern Wyoming bears and wolves might be a consideration.

For defensive purposes in an urban environment, ideally that would be a setup for inside 100 yrds, maneuverable for CQB and easily packable/ concealable for an on foot emergency exfil.

Some states. Not all. Carrying a loaded rifle in your vehicle in Texas, for example, is perfectly legal.

But…

If you are to the point of arguing the nuance of “braced pistol” vs rifle, you’ve already lost and are most likely taking the ride.

The Idaho Enhanced permit allows permit holders to carry any legally owned weapon concealed in Idaho. SBR, MG, DD all legally concealable. Otherwise, just boring concealed pistols without a permit.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL nails aero as trash and then promotes DD who supported restricting your 2A rights

only on the hide

Loaded concealed rifles are GTG here in Wyoming in your vehicle, even while hunting.

Animals classed as Predators can be shot from your vehicle as long as you’re not on a public roadway. So two tracks etc. No license needed.

Coyote hunting at night on public land was recently made legal.

I have 3 small frame ARs, and they’re all BCMs. There are certainly nicer ARs with more up-to-date features out there, but the 18” SS and 14.5” BFH in 5.56 and the 7” BFH in 300 blk have all been great.

If you go with them, you might save $100, or so, buying a complete pistol lower separate from an upper. That would also give you a few more barrel length or handguard options when looking at uppers.

best bang for the buck I'd go with the below (note most links are for 16+” barrels but most also offer shorter ones for a truck gun setup) where you buy a complete upper listed below separately from a complete lower then slap them together:
Or most of the places that sell complete uppers listed above also have complete guns you can get.

Screw that wimpy ass AR platform and go with one of these REAL truck guns.. If you're gonna be a bear, BE A GRIZZLY.

If portability/storage space is a bigger factor, but you don’t want to go with an AR-180 type of setup, you might check out FoldAR. I think the folded length for a number of their pistols is around 15”.

I haven’t heard bad things about their accuracy or reliability, but I haven’t heard enough good things that I would make that my first choice for a defensive setup, unless I had a pretty healthy budget for ammo to prove it out.

My urban truck gun option. At the range I was consistently hitting 16” round steel at 240 yrds. Its intended purpose is inside 50 to max 100 yards.

I usually run supers with 20 round mags to be more compact. Slips into my laptop back pack when folded for discrete carry should I need to go on foot. The brake is a suppressor attachment, should I feel so inclined.

Covered under my CCW in other states that I frequent.

I have since replaced the grip with a MOE-K2+ which is a much better angle for this type of rig.

Thanks for all the replies. Idaho allows you to have a loaded weapon in the vehicle. I have truck guns for 4 legged critters, now I want one for two. I carry a pistol everywhere but in my experience a pistol is so you can fight your way to a rifle. This is something I've wanted for awhile but recent events along with living in an area where you might be a long ways from help paired with plenty of nut jobs living in the woods hiding out have me wanting to get one sooner than later.

Aero makes some really nice stuff. However there customer support in my experience is really really bad. I could be an outlier on there customer service but felt i needed to chime in on aero. Great products but damn I went round and round with them on stuff.

Aero is about to go tits up. Anderson just folded. Dont buy cheap shit that was garbage when the company was "healthy".

Shotguns are piss poor fighting guns outdoors.

Some of yall would buy parachutes from dollar general or condoms from dollar tree. A lifesaving piece of equipment and you would actually buy a piece of shit weapon to trust your life or your families lives to? Must not be worth much.

I'm from North Idaho and there are some crazy ass people there. Do it right. Forget aero precision, Anderson, and all that junk. Get a Geissele or an LMT or some of these other better brands recommended above (Daniel defense if you can stomach their politics, an older colt, bcm is good). My 12" lmt feels like it can do almost everything my 16" can do.....put a law tactical folder on it if you want it shorter, a surefire light or equivalent, and good glass. You won't regret it. People always recommend cheap gear for a "truck gun" because it will be thrown around or you'll only be out a few hundred if it gets stolen. That never made sense to me. If you are carrying this everywhere in your truck chances are that's the gun you'll have if the s*** hits the fan and you need something that absolutely works in that scenario. A high end AR can take the abuse of Marines and /or being tossed around the backseat of your truck. I don't want something cheap and I would take every precaution that it doesn't get stolen anyway.

Yeah I live up here as well in the Silver Valley. There are some goof balls around here and it seems to take the Sheriff 20 mins to respond unless you're going 5 over in town and then they seem to be everywhere. 😂

I was hoping there might be a Remington 870 of ARs out there but I guess i'll just have to work a little overtime to get the benelli.

I bought my Aero 7 or so years ago, doesn’t know it’s supposed to be garbage. Used it in a couple classes and several competitions, runs great. That said, there ain’t much of the original rifle left, after making changes and such. If I were buying a truck gun today, maybe not Aero. I’d get another AUG, most likely. Excellent compact carbine with 16” or greater ballistics.

Check out Sionics. They have a nice patrol AR 15 for around 1,200. I have no personal experience with them, however have been contemplating one and they get positive reviews.
If I couldn’t find a super duty upper on holiday sale etc id get one of these sionics either the complete upper or whole rifle… They are solid for the $$$

Sionics 16″ Premium Complete Upper ($1,000)

Full gun for $1200 as you said:

Personally if you don’t want to build I’d buy a complete 8” - 10” 300blk out from Geissele or BCM or SOLGW or any of the reputable builders and add a Law Folder. Thats what I keep in my car. 556, even with a suppressor, is brutal and inferior to 300blk under 200 yards.

I have a Aero Precision M5, 2 actually, which is their AR10 platform. They have very well thought out engineering and their lower was the easiest one I've ever built. Im sure you are looking to buy a rifle however, im just giving you some background. AR's run on a buffer tube system so unless you get an adapter you can't fold the stock or brace...with the adapter it can only be fired with the stock unfolded, as it needs the buffer tube and spring inside to absorb the recoil of the bolt and send it forward. I'm getting a Springfield Kuna with folding brace. Its a 9mm, with a roller delayed firing system like the famed H&K MP5...its considered a PDW or person defense weapon and is easy to sto away in the truck or a bag. I have a 300 blackout bolt action with 16 in barrel in my truck and tho it may be a bolt gun I can cycle the bolt and shoot quickly if needed. I also have a little more thump and close range. As far as the AR, you will need to bufferless, like something that's a different system but has the ergonomics of an AR. Checkout the Sig Rattler

This thread brings out what I refer to as the John Wick Syndrome. People seem to think they are going to get into a gun fight with dozens of attackers. So even if you have the best AR ever built just how much ammo are you going to carry.
It’s not how much ammo you can carry, it’s how much armor you can wear!
Everyone should be in full kit with the new bullet proof eye goggles too. You don’t want to do all this prepping and go out like a little bitch getting shot in the eye.

Na it's just practicality and what we have learned over the years from encounters. You could write a dissertation why certain platforms are much more suitable but most people here are too lazy or don't care.

Here is a big hint for ya. Very few rounds in a gunfight hit their intended target. It's not a USPSA match or a movie.

No one ever said damn I brought to much ammo to this fight.

Armalite m-15 3 gun with 13" or 18" barrel is easy button. Decent all around and lightweight-ish. Usually find them on sale couple times a year. It says comp gun, but the ballistics and setup are good for general, do-it-all use inside 400m. Bullet weight between 52-62gr with varmint loads & ttsx/gmx will take care of most things (plus 10 more rounds minimum if it's hostile).

My "truck" gun (actually any vehicle) is a 14.5" Geiselle Super Duty with a 1-8x Sig LPVO.

I don't want a pistol & I don't want an SBR; the 14.5" is good enough at any kind of CQB & can easily handle 250 yd engagements, or longer, if you know your dope & are capable.

JMHO, YMMV

MM
I get it. My “truck guns” are 16” 223wylde or 18” 6.5 Grendel small frames. Both fit under the rear seat of a 4door Chevy with a LPVO or full sized optic. Neither have any question of legality. Neither require notification to cross a state line. It’s just easier.
