X-caliber is not known to be a good barrel manufacturer for bolt guns. I know they are well regarded in ars. There are significantly better ones for bolt guns - bartlein, kreiger, brux, proof

There's a large delta between looking for a broad swath of opinions prior to making my own informed decision based on my own requirements, and looking to be told what to do. I appreciate those who have provided theirs.

If you want a carbon barrel for gee wiz factor, fine, but go with a good carbon like proof or bartlien. Yes there are cheaper options, but id hedge my bet and get a great name in carbon banks if you need to go that way.

It is your money and rifle, so your call, but everyone here has built a rifle like yours(range gun) and no one ever said "I wish this magnum was lighter." Now if you wanted a dedicated rig for elk hunting and walking in, sure carbon all the things. With no real defined goal other then to build and enjoy shooting, a heavier all steel barrel will be better in all regards. The cheapest carbon blank is still a 100 or 2 more than a great steel barrel(bart, kreiger, crb). Good luck with your build.

You came and asked a question...and yes, it was about how to torque on a CF barrel and not barrel material or contour. But you also told us you wanted to build a "300 PRC" because it was "best widely-available commercial ELR cartridge in .30 caliber" which certainly implies that you want to shoot long distance. And, you seemed to indicate that this was a range toy and not a hunting or competition rifle like for NRL where you got to hump that thing around.

So, given the above you got the obvious responses. Many of these responses are from highly experienced gunsmiths, competitors, and just people who have built a lot of long range precision rifles (and no, I do not include myself in the expert column).

The responses basically came down to questioning WTF you want a CF barrel on this rifle as there is some downside and, given your use case, just about zero upside.

Yep...your money, your rifle, you can certainly do as you please.

But you def had your mind made up and def didn't want to hear crap about barrel material/contour from people who have built a lot of rifles for the purpose you indicated.

Well I'm glad you asked.
Real, real soon you'll have a place off off Highway 37 a couple miles south of SR 60.
It's called Bone Valley Range.
Initially, it'll have a 500yd range and a bunch of pistol bays that will allow run and gun stuff.
We're still working on the purchase of the adjacent property which will allow for a mile.
I'll be out there working tomorrow.

This is an old layout design from quite a while back, but it's still fairly close.

If you shoot clays, Polk Sporting Clays has been up and ruining since January.

Lots of changes have happened since these photos were taken.

I live in Brandon and shot at JTAC before they closed. I use Mannate Gun Club for the 1000. If you do get the mile I’ll be joining as soon as possible. Can’t wait to hear more as I have heard rumors from others in the business.
