Misery loves company lol (cleaning a 10/22)

I’m not really asking for tips, but feel free to add them if you want.

Deep cleaned my Kidd Supergrade for the first time, around 2k rds. Like, taking it out of the stock, removing the trigger pack, removing the bolt, etc.

Action was cycling a bit sticky and cleaning/lubing the bit visible under the magwell (bolt/receiver etc) wasn’t cutting it anymore.

Ooooofffff!!!

What a royal pain in the neck! Literally!

Dropped various little screws, and the bolt stop pin fell into the trash (found it! eventually).

I’m used to bolt actions. Much easier to clean. I imagine some wag will appear shortly to apply a beat down, but I’m just commiserating here.

Ironically, I have both those GS tools. Bought them ages ago in prep for the eventual day I cleaned this thing.

Didn’t tear down the two stage Kidd trigger as I’m not that brave, and I’m not sure the Gunsmither tools are designed for that specific trigger? Anyway, the trigger area looked ok enough to leave alone. Just wiped off some grime.

But the Bolt Bar was handy! Gotta bone up on how the two little pins work. When in the heat of battle and your hands are oily, it hard to take the time to grab the phone to look at the manufacturer’s how-to vids.

His printed manual is fairly confusing.

This is why I love using Hornady one shot for my 10/22 . Just shoot it into the receiver with the bolt in and run it back and forth, Cleans out the gunk and leaves a nice dry film lube that tends to not gum up nearly as much as any other lube I have tried. Makes the need to deep clean way less frequent.

A friend of mine that owns the local gun shop has a couple magnetic tool mats he uses when working on guns in the shop. Pretty handy.

I get it. Mag loading is a chore, for sure.

Pistol mags, in general, aren’t too fun either. But my CZ 527 rifle mags in 17 Hornet are an absolute bitch! And they only contain 5 rounds!

That Gunsmither tool seems to solve the only complaint I have with my Kidd Supergrade. Putting the bolt back in is a pita; much more so than for my Ruger 10/22.

In other semi-auto news, lately, man I’ve been lucky finding dropped parts (beyond the bits of my Kidd I fumbled).

Yesterday, after my Kidd clean, I changed my AR15’s takedown pins to the JP Microfit ones in order to tighten up the upper/lower fit. Of course I had a spring (once) and the detent (twice) fly away. Man I am a dumbass.

Found the parts each time. Improbable. That’s why I didn’t win the $1.8B Powerball…used up all my twice finding that dang detent.

And btw those larger JP microfit pins work. The fit is much tighter now.

I’ve got a MkIV and I agree, it’s sweet to disassemble/reassemble.

My dad had either a version II or III and it was so complicated to put back together he had to send it back to Ruger for reassembly lol

I’ve got a 22/45 Lite and I swapped the bushing out so it would fire without a magazine inserted. Boy was I pissed for a few hours

Best thing I ever did was to drill a hole in back of Receiver to let me shove a cleaning rod straight threw . I think tear down not that bad .
The Biggest pain in ass to me with 10/22 is taking apart the Magazines and cleaning. Then rewind spring in closing it up . And the Rotary Magazines are the weakest point of the 10/22, as they build-up bullet lube and blow-back grit real fast and wont feed 100% .

Oh man, if the mag cleaning is more of a pain than the rifle teardown…damnit.

I haven’t had to clean a mag yet, but I’ve only shot 2k with 7 mags. I shoot CCI segmented subsonics at varmints out of it pretty exclusively, and they aren’t caked with lube like some target ammo.

But my mags are starting to look kinda dirty uh-oh
