I sorta consider from Durango N to Ouray as the Million Dollar Hwy. Just been on 550 3 times. I know it’s really from Silverton to Ouray , still a beautiful drive. 👍

I don’t see mountains like that in Arkansas ….we have hills ! I was in awe at the beauty ! I reckon a commute might get old ?

Silverton's a way point. Silverton to Ouray (Red Mountain Pass) is the more dicey section.

After a year of commuting you can clip along pretty good if there's no stacks of vehicles. Once you learn the road it becomes more entertaining to watch the reactions of your visiting passengers as you're clipping. My brother visited from Arkansas, him trying to sink his claws into the seat was priceless.

One of the guys in our carpool lived in the Mill Creek Lodge (long torn down), just shy of the road closed gates going up to Coal Bank. Large pull off spot, his wife always had coffee on so the state plow trucks kept it mucked out and filled their cups. He told me one of them told him "Plowing snow was a really boring job until you tag a stump with the wing blade".

There were 86 slide paths between my house and work.

That's been a while.

Thank you,
MrSmith

I’ve lived in the Denver area for close to 20yrs now and get to the mountains as often as possible(not often enough though). I still love driving in the mountains, it’s so amazing. But yes, I’m sure someone who has to drive even the most scenic highways can get complacent over enough time

I went in Apr 2014 a few months after my wife passed away. Needed to get away and clear my head and decompress. I’d heard about the Hwy from a Ouray local, he stressed how pretty it was. Just bought a new Tacoma , camped in it.
I got off on driving 550 !! Weather was nice , not much traffic. I’ve had a few awesome trips out West.
IF it wasn’t for Oklahoma I’d be in Colorado more. That’s 6 hrs of I-40 one way…the turnaround is worse. 😖

I made that drive from Durango to Ouray several times.
I couldn't say whether the scenery is any good or boring as Kansas, because I've never seen any of it. Just asphalt and guardrails in my field of view.
it was a better drive before they put up guard rails and pieces of road were just 'missing' (sometimes up to 1 - 2 feet to the left of the white line). It made for a lively drive.
for a challenge, you can do it in winter when it snows, in an old 70 -80 camaro or firebird.
Had a buddy, I asked him why he kept a case of beer in the trunk of his car. He said, so when you get caught in a tunnel after a avalanche snow slide, you have something to do while you wait for DOT (dept of trans)
